To urge parents not to take their underage children to see the FNAF movie?

Today it was announced that the new "Five Nights at Freddy's Movie" has been classified 15 by the BBFC for "strong threat, violence" - https://www.bbfc.co.uk/release/five-nights-at-freddys-q29sbgvjdglvbjpwwc0xmdeznzy4

I know there's a large fanbase for the FNAF franchise aged 10-14. I'm sorry that they won't be able to see the highly-anticipated movie version on the big screen. But at the same time - as someone who works in a cinema - reading this news has me dreading the release of this film.

A 15 certificate means that NOBODY who has not reached their 15th birthday is allowed into the auditorium. This is enforced by UK law and applies even if the parent accompanies their child. No one underage being in the screen is a condition of the cinema operating. It's just like alcohol - sell alcohol to anyone underage, the venue loses its license and won't be able to remain in operation.

So, if I turn away your under-15 from the FNAF film, I am just following the law. Underage patrons being let into the screen could mean not only legal action against the cinema, but legal action against me - I could also potentially lose my job.

Many people think, "It's not like it's alcohol, it's just a film." No. It's treated almost just as badly as alcohol and other age restricted products. Please be kind to cinema workers who have no choice but to turn away underage customers. It's a shame I have to say this but please don't become aggressive or verbally abusive (it's happened to my colleagues before). I'm sure this isn't the vast majority of people but it's one of the prime sources of customer aggression in the exhibition sector.

Oh - and if your child genuinely is 15 or over, please make sure they bring valid photo ID :) If you don't want them taking valuable documents like passports out then a clear photo of these should suffice. The last thing we want to do is turn away people who ARE within the law but if we do have to...we have no choice and it's absolutely nothing personal.

Five Nights At Freddy's

A man with a traumatic past takes a night security job at a shut down diner in this US horror thriller. Scenes of strong, sustained threat and violence accompany an unsettling theme of child abduction.

Sounds like there are no paedophiles murdering children in the games though, like the poster kept claiming.

It eas my fault that paedophile g9t mentioned as I was remembering the backstory from when I researched it when ds asked to play the game (said no to that) however I only posted once and did not keep claiming or posting.

So no the man was a serial killer that lured 5 children to a basement to murder them and put their bodies in animatronic animals but he was not a paedophile - however at the point you are a child serial killer I think that is still sufficiently not child friendly- I think child killers and paedophiles are pretty much on a par as far as awfulness goes.

100%..
what’s up with people these days not parenting!!… no wonder so many kids are messed up.
my 13 year old wanted to watch a 15 recently at the cinema… she was told not a chance!…. A simple ‘it’s illegal and rated 15 for a reason’ is more than enough of an answer!

The amount of parents in DS class that take their reception aged kids to see 12A films is insane. I honestly just can’t understand why people would think that’s ok for their tiny brains.

They should have made it an 18 if it's that bad. Making it a 15 sounds to me like not too bad but might upset delicate souls. Maybe the guidelines need to be changed.

It's a PG-13 in the US, so at the lowest end of a 15 here, for horror films which have too much threat for a 12A.

Vast majority of PG-13's are 12A here - horror is the consistent exception, given the overall dark tone.

Most 15's (rated R in the US) are that bad nowadays - the BBFC are mostly fair and worth taking seriously.

Never heard of this franchise before - going to go!

You should be on commission! 😎

UndercoverCop · 09/10/2023 14:41

I deal with these themes on a daily basis in real life (work). I had never heard of FNAF I am absolutely horrified that not only does this game exist but that parents are letting young children play it!

It appears to be 15A in Ireland, so under 15s can go as long as they are accompanied by an adult. My dd will be thrilled, she is a very young looking 14 year old and dying to see it.

It's PG-13 in the US (equivalent to 12A, and said films match 99% of the time)

which is where the confusion usually comes

Due to our heavier emphasis on context and tone, horror is the reliable exception getting a 15 here.

Prescottdanni123 · 17/10/2023 20:02

@BBFCExpert

It was PG-13 in the US, which is the same as a 12A. I read a few articles about it on UK sites and they had it down as a 12A before the news broke that it was going to be a 15 over here.

The content is not appropriate for children. Just the description of the plot sickens me. No wonder more young people are suffering with their mental health.

Siameasy · 17/10/2023 20:30

I support you. I hope you don’t get trouble from the chavvy sorts of parents who let their kids do whatever they want.

mogsrus · 17/10/2023 22:48

We had the teddies from the film in our arcade cranes, well over 5 yrs ago, i personally had never heard of them, honestly, we couldn’t get enough of them, those cranes took a lot of money with crying kids if it never paid out when they were playing, with offers to buy them from the parents, amazing but we always had to turn them down

Prescottdanni123 · 18/10/2023 19:32

@BBFCExpert

Alright. I am sorry that I mistakenly thought that FNAF was a 12A after reading a few articles that said that it was. It was not a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation, and my mistake is unlikely to cause widespread panic and distress so no need to jump down my throat, sweets.

I am glad that the movie is going to be rated 15 over here though.

Indeed - despite living in England all my life I've always found the differences between British and Irish film ratings interesting. Ever since I noticed that most DVDs had "two ratings" as a child.

I think the 15A in Ireland is a blessing and a curse. Good in the sense that cinema staff will get far less abuse if children of any age are allowed in with a guardian. Bad in the sense that parents will be taking their 13, 11...9 year olds who simply aren't prepared for the film's content by the sounds of it. Gonna be a lot of sleepless nights in that part of the world :/

Edited

It’s dreadful that parents let kids play games like that let alone take them to the movies. We watched a 12A the other week (my daughter is 12) and was shocked to see some VERY small children in there with their mother. (I presume she was mum)…. It wasn’t scary for us but I can imagine it terrifying children that young (5ish).
I say serve those parents right if their kids keep them up with nightmares for a week or two. Just because kids can watch something, doesn’t mean they should.

Cosmic47 · 20/10/2023 21:52

Are you serious?!? My 12 year old has been a fan since he was 8...shows how much you know... When it comes to streaming he will watch it.

Embelline · 20/10/2023 23:40

@Cosmic47 what do you mean “shows how much you know”?

HoppingPavlova · 21/10/2023 04:10

Okay, we have just had it rated here and it’s an M for us. This means ‘not recommended’ for u15 but it’s advisory only and open slather. So kids of any age can go see it with or without parents. That’s different to our M15 where kids need to be 25 or older without a parent with them but can be any age with a parent.

So this film, here, theoretically a kid of any age can go with/without a parent, it’s just a flag to parents to look into as it might not be suitable for some individual kids who have issues with content it will contain. Given a classifying body has taken this approach, I can’t imagine it’s that bad?

HoppingPavlova · 21/10/2023 04:11

Still doesn’t actually open until next week here but tix presses now started.

Bingsbongs · 21/10/2023 05:04
