To ask for healthy toddler snack suggestions that are genuinely not messy?

My one year old hates the whole rigmarole if sitting in the highchair with a bib on, and so do I, so three times a day is definitely enough.

This means that I give her snacks in the living room so I need things that won't make a mess. I've got stuck in a rice cake rut so I googled and was suggested:

Cheese -this gets chewed up and dribbled back out and then she spreads it around, so I don't see trying to get cheese out of my carpet/sofa as low mess
Cherry tomatoes- these get squeezed and those bloody seeds get everywhere too
Toast -crumbs everywhere

Obviously the list writers have toddlers who will happily seat and eat neatly off a plate. I don't.

Any better suggestions please?

Breadsticks, apple slices, little flapjack bars? All create 'bits' but easily vacuumed!

coxesorangepippin · 04/10/2023 19:41

Cheerios

Feed him outside?

Peepshowcreepshow · 04/10/2023 19:42

This is pretty standard for all babies and toddlers so most people have struggled through this phase before getting to the other side. You could feed your child carrot sticks forever, but realistically it's quite normal (and fucking irritating) to have food chucked everywhere. Strip them off, shower curtain down to catch the mess, only give small amounts at a time to minimise chucking.

Forget the highchair and get a little table and chairs set!! We have one which all our GCs have loved as it suits little people and is easy to clean up and stops the wandering around with food bits.

SapphireOpal · 04/10/2023 19:43

Raisins?

Feed him on the floor in the kitchen?

Do you have a little handheld vacuum? They revolutionised how pissed off I was when DC spilt crumbs and shit on the carpet.

rampagingrobot · 04/10/2023 19:43

Pepper slices.
Cooked carrot sticks.
Chips.

parcelpanic · 04/10/2023 19:44

Yes our nearly 4 year old now uses ours!

My boy is obsessed with spelt/wheat puffs. A perfect mess-free snack which is also healthy!

wellingtonsandwaffles · 04/10/2023 19:45

A friend I know made veg pancakes for her children and they had them out and about all the time. Didn’t seem too messy!

cucumber
indicidual sweetcorn
small meatballs
Apple

most normal snack things will make mess!

rampagingrobot · 04/10/2023 19:46

Also we never used a high chair, but put a messy mat on the floor and a seat like this one on that.

Was easier to get child in/out and reduced the blast radius of food being thrown.

Cascais · 04/10/2023 19:47

sugar snap peas

AnniSparkles · 04/10/2023 19:48

My DC loves plain tortilla wraps.

MummaT86 · 04/10/2023 19:49

Crumpets instead of toast?

takealettermsjones · 04/10/2023 19:50

Get some of those Munchkin snack pots

Totalwasteofpaper · 04/10/2023 19:51

Cheerios in snack cup
Non sugar "sugar puffs" (wheat puffs?) In snack cup
Cucumber slices
A Banana (I let DD peel it and eat it)
Bread
Cooked baby sweetcorn
Cooked carrot sticks
Cooked mange tout
Egg mini muffin
Baby sweetcorn pancakes
Baby power balls (there are sort of crap/ non delicious muffins with peanut butter and banana and oats)

ChekhovsMum · 04/10/2023 19:52

Blueberries (squashed a bit for a 1yo probably) don’t really stain if dropped, and a whole
one tends to go in at once

Torganer · 04/10/2023 19:57

We don’t have carpet so it’s less of an issue. We have a little table that folds away and is perfect sofa height. Also, ours loves the hand held vacuum and at 2yr will happily vacuum the crumbs up after. Or we have a ‘picnic’ and sit on the munchkin and bear wipeable playmat. We eat carrots, cucumber, cheese, apple, mini sandwiches etc. Then just wipe down after.

maybein2022 · 04/10/2023 19:58

Do you need to give her snacks? I don’t bother with my just turned one year old, he just has 3 meals.

Bluecocoon · 04/10/2023 20:01

Banana pancakes. Really easy to make and good on the go, pretty mess free. I just mash a banana in a bowl, add a couple of spoons of flour, an egg and pour in some milk to get the consistency I like (quite thick). Often add grated apple and oats too.

Yes I use 1 banana 2 eggs and some oats

I think you need to accept that if she eats in your living room, she is going to leave a mess.

At best you'll be left with crumbs...

Grapes
Carrots sticks
Cucumber sticks
Pepper sticks
Bread sticks
Sweetcorn
Ham
Chicken breast

EachPeachPearNectarine · 04/10/2023 20:40

Some really good ideas here thank you!

I realise that toddlers make a mess when eating, and deal with this three times a day- it's just five times a day that tips me over! I'm weaning her off constant breastfeeding so she definitely needs snacks at the moment. Maybe I can stop soon though, all the advice I've seen says to do 3 meals plus snacks as their stomachs are so small but if I can get away with just three meals that would be good!

I don’t allow food out of the kitchen because I’m a killjoy. Getting a chair they can get into and out of themselves is a total game changer - either a climbable tall one like a Tripp Trapp or a mini table and chairs like that plastic ikea one.

Also yes handheld mini vacuum and long handled dustpan and brush gamechangers here.
