Arrest a shoplifter says Tory MP. Would you? I wouldn't.

This is the latest economy they wish to foist upon us. Please detain anyone you spot helping themselves to goods which belong to a shop. Don't think about your own personal safety, just be public spirited enough to interrupt that junkie over there helping himself. As if.

I actually know a few lads who would be well up for this. Obviously they would need assurances that they wouldn’t be charged with anything should the ne’er do well start screeching for their rights

BlowDryRat · 04/10/2023 08:56

I can just imagine trying this.

Spying a gaunt individual slipping bottles of alcohol into his jacket.

"You're under arrest for shoplifting."

"Piss off."

"Oh. Umm..."

<rugby tackle, broken glass, get banned for life from Asda>

BrettAndersonsCheekbones2 · 04/10/2023 08:56

What a great way to get stabbed!

This is a genuine question, if anyone can explain in simple terms (happy to say I'm ignorant in this matter!). Why is it that we don't have "enough" police these days to actually manage the crime levels?

Is it that there is a bigger population/more crime going on and broadly the same number of police as before? Is it that there are enough police but they are not being well managed?? Or is it the same as its always been, just better advertised through social media etc?

It's just - and I am not blaming individual coppers here - it seems like, well what are they all doing? So they can't possibly crack down on shoplifting... why? What are they actually doing? There's enough in the press of shoddy investigations and missed opportunities to intercept crimes...

Like I say,, I'm not blaming individual officers, who I'm sure are in it up to their eyeballs.... but what is it which means the crime levels seem out of control these days? I'd love to understand it better!

There's a road in a small town near me called Stock and Pillory Lane. That could be an option. I'm surprised Suella and her mates haven't yet proposed reinstating Stocks in every town centre. It would be a vote winner, don't tell her.

No way. Personal safety is not something I'd compromise. Plus tories are chronically underfunding all the early intervention services that discourage shoplifting so I'm not doing a thing to mitigate that. If they underfund vital community services crime stats will rise accordingly and the blame lies with them and their policies. Not the vulnerable people who are shoplifting.

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 04/10/2023 08:59

Not a chance. If they are that threatening I'll even help them out to their car.

SomersetBrie · 04/10/2023 08:59

What might be good is instead of getting ordinary citizens to do police work by arresting shoplifters, they could get them to do MP work and try and actually sort out the problems in this country instead of pretending they are not happening/deliberately ignoring them.

DyslexicPoster · 04/10/2023 09:00

Good god no. I have my own plate of problems to feast on without getting beaten up. Delusional twit.

Get some police in. They can enforce the law.

Big chain shops with crime problems also need to weight up the profit / loss in problem.stores and pay for security.

When I try to stop a adult attacking a child? Yes

Would I try to stop a fight? I hope I'd find the courage.

Would I risk getting hurt to protect Tescos profits? No. My line stops before that.

12 years of cuts mean we don’t have enough police officers. Meanwhile, the woke agenda means the ones we do have are too busy attesting people over hurt fee fees. Rather than tackling actual Crime.

It’s quite sad that this is controversial. Of course it’s the right thing to do to try to stop a crime being committed.

If a crime was being committed against you, would you want people around you to just ignore it?

MessyMyrtle · 04/10/2023 09:01

Are crime levels out of control these days? The media like to report they are, on a regular basis - they’ve been doing this for years.

if there has been an uptick in shoplifting atm, perhaps it’s because people are hurting so much financially they are driven to it?

I wouldn't expect anyone to risk their own personal safety to help me.

RudsyFarmer · 04/10/2023 09:02

Like fuck I would. Organised crime is getting involved. Lads with swords in their trouser leg. They’ll be boosters with guns before long and the police will have to shift their gaze that way or people will be killed trying to rescue some steak.

sugarplum33 · 04/10/2023 09:03

From homeschooling our children to providing care for relatives in hospitals and now arresting criminals. It's almost like they want us to learn to live without basic, functioning public services.

LittleMonks11 · 04/10/2023 09:03

Was this suggestion made during Braverman's Nuremberg Rally yesterday?

newnamethanks · 04/10/2023 09:05

@HongKongGarden you go first then and show us how to do it.

Startingagainandagain · 04/10/2023 09:05

I think we need to arrest a few Tory MPs, ministers and prime ministers instead...

They have stolen more from this country that the average shop-lifter ever will.

PowerTulle · 04/10/2023 09:07

Great idea. Like the suggestion women ‘flag down a bus’ if they are in fear of being kidnapped or assaulted?

Bellend.

Have you ever seen a crime being committed?
Did you try to arrest the person?

Tinkerbyebye · 04/10/2023 09:07

I wouldn’t stop them, but would report tothe shop for them to sort

Topseyt123 · 04/10/2023 09:10

Like hell would I risk my own safety like that.

What a stupid arse! What planet do these MPs live on?

PowerTulle · 04/10/2023 09:10

Stopped reporting the regular shoplifting to our local shop staff ages ago. They know, they record everything on cameras and the police know. Staff quite rightly don’t intervene for their own safety. Police do absolutely nothing.
