To want a cleaner that will pick my clothes up off the floor?

Dp and I work very long hours during the week. We’re out of the house 9-10 minimum. We eat dinner in the office. When we get home we’re exhausted and just want to sleep. So often the kitchen has our breakfast stuff. We’ve left clothes on the floor. There might be sunday’s dishes on the table. The laundry has been left out drying.

We earn an OK salary and have a tiny flat to save money, so a cleaner coming 2-3 times a week for two hours a time won’t be an issue.

But obviously I’m slightly embarrassed for someone to see my home in such a mess. Are there any cleaners who will sort all of this? Pick up the clothes, put them on to wash, load the dishwasher, and clean the bathroom etc?

I just think you’re naive if you think people will come on and robotically respond to the query on a forum like AIBU - that’s not how humans work.

I never start threads on here for this very reason! Read-only for me.

UnkindamI · 04/10/2023 20:30

You're quite wrong. OP did specifically ask for people's opinions. That is exactly what she asked for by posting in the AIBU topic. She is literally asking people to tell her whether she is being reasonable or not.

OhYeahOhYeah · 04/10/2023 20:32

Surely two grown adults can keep a small flat clean and tidy. Weekend blitz and wash up as soon as you’re done eating and wash up as you cook. Done in minutes

Mememe9898 · 04/10/2023 20:34

If you find the right cleaner they can do other tasks.
As my house is generally pretty clean and both of us work full time and have two young kids I ask her to do a bit of the laundry for me so I have at least one day a week where I don’t have to line dry the laundry and fold up the clothes. If I miss one day of laundry in the house we end up with a mountain of clothes and I like having an empty washing basket everyday.
Shes also tidied up my bookshelves which I didn’t ask her to but she had some spare time in the hours that I paid her as she’d done the rest so did some extras. She even does babysitting for our neighbours which I’ve never asked her to do but my neighbour has an 18 month old and they occasionally need help. If you find the right person they can do lots of different things for you.

I do. But what I don’t get is why people are so judgemental

Probably because most of us would expect adults to be capable of picking up their own pants and not be slobby.

And the clue is in the name of the topic - it's patently asking for opinions, which can be rough. If OP just wanted patting on the head and telling whatever she does is just dandy, she'd pick a different topic. Or possibly website 😂

maddening · 04/10/2023 20:36

My cleaner would do that, I would just need to pay the amount of hours needed.

Nurses also work those stupid hours and get paid far less. I struggle to see why health care is valued less than being a corporate lawyer.

It’s paid less because a corporate lawyer can make a company millions of pounds if do their job right. It all boils down to money.
A nurse does an amazing job but her work does not being in ££££s into an organisation. The more money you bring into a company the more money you can ask for as your contribution has a direct impact on the bottom line. That’s why sales people can earn a lot of money if you land a £1m deal and get a % commission. My last job was commission based and it was pretty lucrative when landing a £500k deal. If you want to earn lots of money you need to do jobs that brings in lots of money.

MeridaBrave · 04/10/2023 20:45

Best to put clothes in the wash so she knows what stuff on the floor is to be washed. But yes to kitchen mess. Tbh my kids are terrible at putting clothes in wash and I have given up cleaning up before my cleaner comes.

I just don't think any job is worth being out of the house 6:45am - 10 pm and later.

Seriously? What's the point of earning £££££ if you're permanently exhausted and can't enjoy life?

I'd rather earn £20k and be at home and have no work stress than earn £200k and fall into bed at night and drag my self out again at 6am and be so exhausted and short of time I can even do basic tasks like put clothes away and clean dishes.

It’s called building a career. 🙄

Not everyone wants to be a shop assistant etc.

Meowandthen · 04/10/2023 21:03

That’s not what was said or explained. Leaving before 7am and getting back 9-10pm every day makes for a long day.

Indeed. That’s the way of the world.

There are an awful lot of people here who don’t seem to understand the basic principles of capitalism.

I couldn't imagine the interview . I imagine saying to another adult would you be willing to pick up my dirty clothes/underwear ? Without hanging my head in shame and my face going red .

HoneycrispApple · 04/10/2023 02:02

some people posting on here are so so judgemental and rude! They probably have no idea what it is like to be working such long hours. Ignore!

I think you’ll need to check with the person you hire they are ok to do such tasks. Other than that, it’s your money, your life.

I do.

When I used to go into London daily I was out from 5:30am till gone 20:00. I was up at 4:30am to get ready on time and routinely didn’t have a lunch break so I could leave that bit earlier (aka not get home at 20:30!)

I managed to be an actual adult and not only hang clothes up but wash them, cook my own dinner and clean my house.

OP is lazy. End of.

Branwells77 · 04/10/2023 21:12

I am out of the house 12/13 hours a day my DH is out the house 15/16 hours we have two teenage sons who I cook for when I get home I also manage to clean the house and do the washing I tidy and clean as I go I think you and your DH are just lazy

Comedycook · 04/10/2023 21:13

You need to learn how to "adult"

The solution to this little conundrum is not to pay someone to pick the clothes off the floor. The solution is to put them in a laundry basket. You can buy them online or in shops. Put in room. Take clothes off...put in basket. It really won't be beyond your capabilities. Promise

Branleuse · 04/10/2023 21:13

That wouldn't be what you'd say. You'd ask if they do general tidying as well as cleaning.
It's just work. What on earth is shameful about it? No ones forcing anyone to take the work.

baloosbaloos · 04/10/2023 21:14

Always pointless chiming in 15 pages into a thread but I just wanted to say OP, I’m sorry that you have been cursed with one of the highest percentage of snotty cunts in your replies that I have seen for quite some time. Obviously people with little to be proud of other than their basic tidying skills. Anyway, if you want to pay someone to pick your clothes up off the floor I don’t see how that’s any more disrespectful than paying them to clean your toilet. Pay well and communicate clearly, I’m sure there will be many people happy to provide the service you require.

People aren’t proud of basic tidying skills. You’ve missed the point. The point is that it’s such a basic task, it barely registers for most people. Dirty clothes dropped in laundry basket, not the floor and a very quick rinse of cereal bowl before it goes in the sink or dishwasher is basic. It’s no different to brushing your teeth or flushing the toilet.

Teddleshon · 04/10/2023 21:20

There’s a difference between cleaning a toilet and cleaning a toilet with skid marks all over it. It’s about having basic respect for people and not treating them like dirt.

I know of grad jobs like this a friend of mine had a sleeping pod at his bank but this was 20 years ago so not sure if allowed now.

I have almost always had cleaners but I never expected them to tidy up.

I would suggest you send shirts to a laundry and your bedding, there is no point earning mega bucks and having zero time so make time. But definitely put clothes in a Laundry basket.

A good cleaner can clean a flat if tidy really very well in an hour and you would only need a cleaner once per week. You could get one in for two hours per week and they could clean fridge out and stuff like that which is classed more as a deep clean and not every week and do every single cleaning job.

As an aside the average wage in the UK is 35k per annum, you are already in top 5% of earners and if you hit 300k will be in top 2%. I don’t mind big earners but I don’t like it when they think they aren’t

It's definitely allowed. I speak from bitter experience.

Dunnoburt · 04/10/2023 21:27

Sounds like you live to work....... not work to live.....

Puffwiththegreeneyes · 04/10/2023 21:28

Our housekeeper does laundry, tidying and the dishwasher. In addition to general cleaning.

Hellenabe · 04/10/2023 21:30

This thread had turned completely bizarre! @Zamphina pretty much everyone I know has cleaners. Some even have cooks who do a few hours a week. It's pretty standard in places like Dubai or Asia so when they come here, they have someone. Yes, most are decent earners but its all about priorities.

There are some here who can do it all, who are always tidy regardless of how many hours they work. They work, cook, clean and maintain a home. Personally I can't do it all. I make decent money but I work a lot. So the last thing I want to do is spend my downtime cleaning. You are young, just pay someone else to do it.

I think many here are judgemental given your wages but I'd say most of my friends earn in excess of 100K a year. They have the disposable income to do what they like.

Hamandpeas · 04/10/2023 21:30

Sorry - not read all replies. If I were you I would be looking for a housekeeper/ cleaner - someone who is happy to pick up stuff, clean, wash, put away and probably shop for you. Thats long hours and if you can afford help why not!

I currently work 10 hour days and try to pick up the cooking/cleaning after work - if I could afford it I would definitely get help in as I love my job and don't want to give up the hours.
