Feeling a bit harassed by meter installation people

Can I stop the text messages from EON? It’s getting a bit annoying.

I pay by DD, take my own meter reads, never had an issue. It ain’t broke, I don’t see why I need a meter.

Is it smart meter they want to install? Can’t see why they would be bugging you for another meter?

Sunshineandrainbow · 03/10/2023 21:13

Me too, but the offer of a free costa is so tempting - hmmm

CyberCritical · 03/10/2023 21:15

Oh we're stuck in a really annoying loop with eOn about this, they send us an SMS/email, we go to the link to arrange the installation, fill out the form and it tells us we're not suitable for a Smart meter. No number or method to contact them about it, we don't really care so leave it, then we get another SMS........

MariaVT65 · 03/10/2023 21:15

It will be for smart meters and will be counted as an ‘operational/service’ contact rather than marketing, so not sure they can be stopped tbh. Sorry. You can just continue to ignore them though. They are doing it because it’s a government directive I believe, but still not compulsory.

Elieza · 03/10/2023 21:15

They’re doing the same to me. I’m not interested.

I will not change my way of life to save 2p. I already use only what I can afford and am not in debt. Indeed I had a large credit they returned to me.

It’s part of remote control the powers that be want to have over is all. So they can easily switch off our power.

Quittingthyme · 03/10/2023 21:17

They are harassing you because they want to meet their targets to install already out of date tech that will likely lead to higher bills

There is no legal obligation to have a smart meter fitted despite what they may say.

Energy companies don’t switch your power off if you live in a domestic property. The worst they could do if you’re not paying your bills is switch it to a prepayment meter.

Beezknees · 03/10/2023 21:18

You can request it to stop. Just phone or email and you will be marked as not interested.

teacher45646 · 03/10/2023 21:18

They absolutely can and do shut off power to domestic houses…

Quittingthyme · 03/10/2023 21:19

@Elieza you're not far off. Easy reach now to disconnect those struggling with bills. The stuff we sleepwalk into in this Country is worrying

That actually can't be enforced either now.

They do not. It's illegal.

AquamarineGlass · 03/10/2023 21:19

EOn are dreadful....texts, calls and emails multiple times a week pushing a Smart Meter I don't want. Very intrusive and certainly should be banned.

tsmainsqueeze · 03/10/2023 21:21

Call them and tell them you do not want a meter and not to call you for this reason.
I did this with sse and now ovo ,i have had no further calls .

My partner is in a significant amount of debt and when the prepayment metre runs out, the power is cut until it is topped up.

Beezknees · 03/10/2023 21:22

(Disclaimer, I work in the energy sector and we are categorically not allowed to shut off power in domestic homes).

justasking111 · 03/10/2023 21:22

We've had pamphlets in this area warning us of rolling power cuts this winter that will last no longer than three hours a day. We've had nothing about smart meters

gamerchick · 03/10/2023 21:23

I blocked the texts from EDF. Constant pestering, got right on my tit ends.

dayofcheese · 03/10/2023 21:23

If you arrange a time to get one installed and they can't because they've run over and it's got too dark then they have to cancel your appointment. Just something to take into consideration when booking an appointment. I think some companies add credit to your bill as compensation. But worth working from home if you can rather than taking leave for the installation.

PastTheGin · 03/10/2023 21:23

Shell Energy are the same. It doesn’t matter how often I tell them that we don’t want a smart meter and not to ask again, they keep calling.

Beezknees · 03/10/2023 21:23

teacher45646 · 03/10/2023 21:21

That's because it's a pre payment meter and that's how they work, the debt makes no difference.

So they work by.. having the power cut off? In a domestic residence? Whatever the reason, it does happen.

Not allowed and able to cut off the power are 2 different things. No company should have that ability.

No.

They still have access to power - just have to pay for it first. It's not cut for the debt. It's like pay as you go phone.

Quittingthyme · 03/10/2023 21:26

We're all paying for the smart meter roll out through our bills. Gov't directive, householder funding. There will be a new wave of installs required soon when the batteries in this lot run out.
