To not pay?

So I'm a bit confused and was hoping someone could help.
My son is moving to a different nursery on the 30th of October. I've paid up to the 20th of October for his current nursery. I've been told I need to pay for the next month too. I don't really fancy paying for two lots of nursery fees, especially as he would only attend for a few days! I would rather not pay and just not send him in after the 20th until he starts the new one. Is there something I'm missing as to why I HAVE to pay?

What does your contract say? We had to give a term's notice otherwise we were liable for the full fees.

Intelligenthair · 03/10/2023 20:26

It entirely depends what your contract says. No-one here knows that.

dementedpixie · 03/10/2023 20:26

Did you give the correct notice of your intention to leave the 1st nursery?

confusedlots · 03/10/2023 20:26

What does the contract say and when did you give notice? Most nurseries ask for 2 or 3 months notice, if you give less then you still have to pay the notice period

Thewizardbinbag · 03/10/2023 20:28

Some nurseries have a months notice, others have a whole term. What does your contract say?
You’ll have to pay whatever the notice period is from whenever you gave notice.

Yahyahs22 · 03/10/2023 20:28

His nursery asked for a month notice which I gave, more than actually. I'll check out the contract. Didn't even think of that! Thank you

Eh 🤔 you’ve paid up to the 20th yet you think you can send your child in until the 30th?

Regardless of notice periods etc, I really don’t understand why you’d think this was possible.

Read it again, especially the part where she's said she won't send him in again after the 20th.

Do you mean that in order for your child to go from 20th-30th they want you to pay for a month, not a week? If so did you give notice you were leaving on 30th, or just give a months notice on 20th September?

They said regardless whether he ends on the 20th I still need to pay the next month's. Which just seems odd to me considering I told them before the 20th of September

It must be in the contract. Ours is 3 months and can only finish at the end of a month and not mid month.

swissrollisntswiss · 03/10/2023 20:40

Tbh I’m surprised you didn’t check the contract before giving notice anyway.

dayofcheese · 03/10/2023 20:42

check the contract end im sure that will clear it up * *

Why? All they told me was I need to give a month's notice when I told them it was likely I would change to a closer one if the hours came up. Only when I gave the notice was I told I need to pay for the next month's.

Many apologies - totally missed a very vital ‘not’ ☺️

A months notice usually means you would tell them the month in advance, and pay for the full following month.
So, if you gave notice in September then you pay for all of October. You shouldn’t be paying for November though.

This is exactly what I was thinking. It seems very odd that I have to pay when I followed everything they told me I need to do, and he'll only be attending up to the days I've paid for

Usually you need to give a calendar months notice (and you can't choose it from the day you want). Most contracts at nurseries start at the beginning of a month (Unless I have misunderstood you) - this is why you need to pay until the end of the month (even if your child is not there)

Livelovebehappy · 03/10/2023 21:00

So they’re asking you to pay for November too?

caringcarer · 03/10/2023 21:02

Check your contract because depending on the date he started you might have to give notice in writing by a particular date in the month and if you miss that date then the whole following month.

Yeah, exactly

I guess it's fully my responsibility to check the contract, but surely when I was told I need to give a month's notice they would've reminded me that it has to be from a specific date? I'm on holiday at the moment so I'll have to check in when I'm home. I'll have a word with them Monday if it doesn't state anything like this.

Hesma · 03/10/2023 21:40

When did you give the months notice? Just mentioning you’re looking for a nearer place doesn’t count
