Mum not answering WhatsApp after breast ultrasound

My mum, 70, had Breast cancer a couple of years ago, luckily it was a very small, slow growing one, she had treatment and was all clear. She recently had her regular check up mammogram and they found a small lump in her armpit, the nurse said she thought it was nothing serious but requested an ultrasound to be sure. I texted my mum this morning asking what time the ultrasound was, she told me the time (1 pm) and sounded fine. I asked her to text me when she was back. I heard nothing off her, so Whatsapped at around 5.30, she saw the message but no reply. My mum generally replies straight back and not being awful but if she’s in, she’s never really busy as it’s just her and dad and they’re retired, she also doesn’t go out in the evening.
I’m prone to worry/anxious thinking about things like this, could they tell if it’s cancerous on an ultrasound and would they tell you that during the ultrasound?
Would you whataspp again or just give her time to come to you?

Sent another message, two ticks but not been seen, she saw the other one, tried calling and no answer. Will message my sister

Messaging your sister sounds reasonable.

but she may simply need some alone time to process.

@PumpkinsAndCoconuts Could she have been told something really bad after the ultrasound

I'd wait till after they've eaten but before the generally go to bed....then I'd ring. Some conversations are suited to texting.

Whatareallthesefacecreamsfor · 03/10/2023 20:14

Thanks everyone, she’s ok 🙏
Appointment ran over, then the bus broke down on the way back or something and she was tired and now sat in her watching tv
It showed no signs of cancer, was explained as just something that can find and go (not cancerous) a node in the armpit

I’m so happy for you, OP!

Jellycats4life · 03/10/2023 20:31

What a relief! I would have been sick with worry in your shoes too OP.

1month · 03/10/2023 20:42

Don’t go round or ring her.

She’ll reply when she’s ready.

This is not about you (although I completely understand your worry) and posters are being very selfish by telling you they’d go round or ring her, when it’s highly likely she doesn’t want to talk right now.

1month · 03/10/2023 20:43

Oops didn’t see your update.

That’s amazing news!! ❤️❤️

NashvilleQueen · 03/10/2023 20:43

Great to hear OP

Whatareallthesefacecreamsfor · 03/10/2023 20:46

Thanks everyone💜, but why she doesn’t reply 🤷🏻‍♀️🙈 I’ve been sat worried sick, at least she’s ok 🙏
I perhaps should chill a bit as I get far too anxious!

I was just about to say this sounds like my MIL and that she'd be fine but busy/tired. some people just don't think 🙈 really glad she's okay x

Oiyouoverthere · 03/10/2023 21:43

Glad it all worked out in the end.

I also wouldn't have rung or gone round, in my family we communicate by text. The last time my sister and I spoke on the phone she'd dislocated her knee and her husband needed instructions on popping it back - we leave phone calls for absolute emergencies. Births and other good news is transmitted via WhatsApp! As is catching up and worrying about people!

I’m too far to go around unfortunately

Can anyone tell me if they’d tell you results there and then? She said (before she had it done) that results for the ultrasound and mammogram would take a couple of weeks

My mum had scans where the person doing the scan would give her an indication eg the lumps edges look clean or the edges look spikey; but my mum would always ask and had an understanding. I don’t believe they say things unless you ask.

Maybe because you don’t call her?

I call my mum daily and she lives two streets away.

Or is it that she doesn’t like talking on the phone?

CopperLion · 04/10/2023 06:31

Glad to hear it OP!

@MoonShinesBright She said they told her it was ok, not cancerous? Does that sound normal?

Some places offer a one stop breast clinic, did she possibly see the radiologist or consultant straight after the appointment?

What you're told in the appointment depends on where (what country) you're being seen in. OP says she's in another country and it's not clear from her post whether her mother is in the UK or not.

I've never had a breast ultrasound, but I've had a transvaginal ultrasound and an ultrasound of my thyroid (neither in the UK) and both times I was told by the examining doctor (it was done by the gynaecologist and by the endocrinologist, no technicians) straight away and also given the images.

anon1968 · 04/10/2023 21:29

I had breast cancer in 2017, a few months later i then found a lump and had to go back ti the hospital, they did a scan and told me straight away this was a cyst and not the cancer returning so it is a possibility that the same has happened at your mums appointment. I really do hope so for u. X

My local hospital does a one-stop clinic, I had an ultrasound and mammogram then saw a consultant all within a couple of hours so had same day results.

WolfFoxHare · 04/10/2023 21:40

I had a breast ultrasound in 2013 and they told me it all looked fine there and then. I did have to have my breast examined physically too, but there was no ‘You’ll hear in a couple of weeks’. Similar when I have had vaginal ultrasounds. This was in England. I understand it may be different if they see anything they think might be sinister though.

Glad your mum is ok, OP.

poetryandwine · 04/10/2023 21:42

My experience was similar to @CaineRaine ‘s. After a suspicious mammogram I was scheduled for a long appointment at the local Breast Centre. First step was a diagnostic mammogram, performed by a professional who wasn’t a consultant. Then the ultrasound was actually performed by a radiology consultant who had already read the mammogram results. She cleared me.

Upon arrival I had been met by a nurse who outlined these steps to me and told me that if the mammogram and ultrasound weren’t decisive I would need a biopsy, and its outcome wouldn’t be known for a couple of weeks.
