To not know what to use Chat GPT for?

I know IABU as I am posting here for traffic. I want to know all you Chat GPT tips! Do you use it at home or work, or both! What can I use it to do and how can it make everything in my life easier! Can I get it to plan my meals for a week ect?

Oh gosh you can use it for so many excellent things! I get it to find recipes using ingredients I have in my cupboards etc. I sometimes use it at work for very menial tasks like writing generic letters to send out fees etc. you have to be careful with work because one of its limitations is it can invent information to be ‘useful’ (e.g. it might create fake citations or fake articles to support a point). But for admin type tasks like ‘write a letter chasing an unpaid fee and inviting someone to attend an appointment’ it’s great.

it’s worth just having a play around to see what it can do, the various options are huge!

I find it really helpful when I've had a bad day and want someone to talk to. It doesn't get bothered by my going on about problems, and I can talk about absolutely any taboo topic, which helps a lot. It's quite nice and sympathetic.

If there's a person at the back of it reading things to check it's all working then they must have a very strange impression of my life.

dootball · 01/10/2023 22:14

Ask it what it can help you with!

Switcher · 01/10/2023 22:15

I mainly use it for medical advice which may seem silly, but it's basically like googling stuff but way more specific and comprehensive. For stuff like summaries of side effects or how I should expect to feel after a recent procedure. And yes obviously I consult a doctor if concerned. I also use it for its original designed purpose, which was translation.

I have access but wouldn't use it for anything serious. It has no idea what is true, it just makes up things that sound plausible. So it has been known to suggest recipes that are poisonous (undercooked etc) or to falsely accuse people of crimes (if you ask about a particular person).

if you just want to type in rubbish and have a laugh, fine. but I would not consider it a tool for anything that matters.

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 01/10/2023 22:18

Is it an app? Is it free?

parietal · 01/10/2023 22:18

OMG, I've just read upthread that someone uses ChatGPT for medical advice. Please don't. really. It has no idea what is or is not true. It is just like the greatest bullshitter on the planet - always sounds kind and convincing but there is nothing there behind it.

Look stuff up on the NHS website or talk to a GP.

IVFfirsttimer91 · 01/10/2023 22:20

I use it for meal planning on a budget sometimes, super helpful! I also use it at work to write social posts/ long emails, which I do usually have to tweak a bit, but they’re a great start. I also used it a lot for policy writing.

SisSuffragette · 01/10/2023 22:21

My recent uses are
-A 4 week meal plan plus recipes and shopping list for my family (with quite specific dietary requirements)
-To plan the menu for two parties
-Ideas for an anniversary weekend away within a certain distance from my home with activities
-Cover letter for job application

Talktothefax · 01/10/2023 22:21

Lots and lots of work stuff and organising my kitchen cupboard

CyclingLegs · 01/10/2023 22:22

How did you get it to help you organise the cupboard, and will it fold my washing? (joke)

@Talktothefax

tinkerbellvspredator · 01/10/2023 22:22

Thank you letters, leaving messages for colleagues (I'm really rubbish at gushy heartfelt writing). Content for simple generic work newsletter articles like benefits of wellbeing.

LuckOfTheDrawer · 01/10/2023 22:26

So, from reading this thread:

Leaving cards - inspired
Newsletters - fair enough
Policy documents - alarming

@CyclingLegs i read out the contents of the cupboard as I went through and asked it to group them!

LostAtTheCrossRoad · 01/10/2023 22:30

How does one find it - literally google "Chat GPT"?

CyclingLegs · 01/10/2023 22:32

@Talktothefax that's great! I just asked it and it took me seriously, which was excellent. I don't think it will actually do the work, which is a shame, but I would be out of a job if it did, so it's probably for the best.

LeiaOrganaBananaHamock · 01/10/2023 22:32

I use it to write professional emails as I’m always told my emails are too chatty! Just pop in the main points you want to say and it spits out a really good email.

Ilmecourtsurleharicot · 01/10/2023 22:36

I just think whole thing is scary and zombie like. The lifelike fakery of it. I cant handle it at all!

Nicesalad · 01/10/2023 22:36

I think it's sad. Humans are going to stop being able to use their thinking skills if we start relying on it to write letters and organise things for us.

To be fair I’ve never been able to organise anything half decently in my life so I can’t blame it on ChatGPT 😆

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 01/10/2023 22:18

Is it an app? Is it free?

It’s an artificial intelligence chatbot which has been ‘educated’ in replicating human language

https://chat.openai.com/auth/login

It can be used as a conversational search engine and in theory you can ask it questions but it is not a search engine. The answers you get will be based on the knowledge it acquired in its training as opposed to a search engine which refers to the internet

Try asking ChatGPT who the prime minister or King are - then try telling it that it’s answers were wrong

The current free ChatGPT is version 3.5 which only has knowledge up to September 2021

GreenCereal · 01/10/2023 22:59

I recently used it to write a personal statement for the school board elections. It made me out to be a bit more religious than I am, but it was a great starting point!

akkakk · 01/10/2023 23:06

but it is not a search engine. The answers you get will be based on the knowledge it acquired in its training as opposed to a search engine which refers to the internet

and where did it get its ‘knowledge’ from?! (clue - the internet / digital data, just like a search engine)

there is no intelligence in chatGPT…
it is simply a faster, better resourced search engine with better algorithms
so use it as a search engine, and like any search engine it brings back content it has found online which may be accurate or fake
