You know when you were the naughty kid at school and you didn't want to get into trouble so you bullied a cleverer child into doing your homework for you?

Well, ChatGPT is the cleverer child, except using robots and the internet and stuff.

@MidnightOnceMore I implement AI for a living. I said I wouldn't rely on it, but I can check its sources anyway. Not like looking at some shit on "health line" is very reliable.

If you are checking the sources yourself, you're not really relying on it anyway, it would definitely be unwise to do that for health advice.

That's not about your ability to use the technology itself, but about checking the sources you are taking health advice from.

I confess I used it to write all the outline header points of an essay. It did try to write me the essay but as I knew it could all be rubbish and get me in trouble I deleted all the essay body under the headings to be on the safe side. now I just have a fabulous contents page and all the headings I need and from intro to conclusion and need to write the essay itself. I put it through a plagiarism check and it found nothing

Well, you still didn't do the work yourself.

Never said I did! The outline was going to take ages, now I just need to fill in the content under the headings and do all the references (which I am dreading)

to create references there are somne websites that generate the references as long as you know the book or site etc

I find its writing style quite bland, and I have started to spot when people are using it to compose text like emails.

Students use it to write their essays! Needless to say, teachers have found as I have above...

I'm currently working on a presentation to give at work about pensions. We have a pretty complicated scheme but all the details are freely available on the Internet, so for interest - after writing the slides and script myself - I gave the brief to ChatGPT to see what it came up with.

The structure and main headings were very similar indeed to mine. It had more than twice as many slides (I had given it a time limit for the presentation). And too much content on each slide. But the big fail was that the detail of the content was useless - completely generic pensions info rather than the details of our specific scheme, despite that being the focus of the brief.

SunRainStorm · 03/10/2023 12:05

I ask it to write linked in posts, newsletters, bulletins, letters.

It usually produces a decent first draft and then I finesse it

StarryStarryNightColours · 03/10/2023 12:13

I find the fact that a bot is writing poetry utterly depressing, poetry for me is from the soul or whatever people class as their inner self, the very fabric of their being.

I am not anti tech at all I was programming and learning how to make websites back in 1994 when it was still in its infancy and most of the world had never even accessed the web.

I suppose if you want advice or information without human emotion attached then go ahead. It’s just for me a reason for people to have to interact even less than they do now. The issue is asking this on an online forum by its very nature introverts and the socially anxious gather so the reasoning and answers will always be skewed.

CaroleSinger · 03/10/2023 12:35

I've known people to use it for writing threads about their friends pawning their wedding shoes before...

It doesn't write poetry, it writes doggerel which perhaps helps show it's complete lack of any 'inner self'.

Oh this thread is great! I have to give a talk next week and have been procrastinating about it as its stressful and its really helped focus on what I need to say and why. Many thanks!

  1. put in all my blood test anomalies and did a great job of diagnostics. Changed my medication accordingly. Actually suggested exactly what I'd been saying to the gp for a whole
  2. incredibly insightful about patterns in an abusive relationship
  3. excellent for research or quite general topics but not specialist ones (makes up stuff)
Allywill · 02/05/2024 14:13

my daughter’s boyfriend used it to write a poem about (her name) who wears christmas pajamas all year round. it was fabulous and we were all amazed reading it! so there’s that.

blueandgreenandyellow · 02/05/2024 14:13

Gp said I need a nutritionist because I have medical conditions with conflicting food requirements. They didn't have the resources so I got chat gpt 4 to do it!

youngones1 · 02/05/2024 14:14

The best thing is no adverts.

blueandgreenandyellow · 02/05/2024 14:15
