Getting rings cut off

At the end of August I took my dog for a walk, I wasn’t holding her lead properly and she pulled slightly but I think it bent my finger back/at a funny angle. It was immensely painful at the time but within a few days the pain subsided a bit so assumed no break/fracture. I couldn’t get my rings off as my finger was so swollen and painful but not ridiculously painful. It went down slightly but 7 weeks later and I still can’t get them anywhere near off and it feels as if the circulation is getting cut off where the rings are digging in.

Firstly does anyone have any idea what I may have done and secondly has anyone had their rings cut off, would you give to a jeweller for that? And if so does anyone have any rough cost of getting platinum rings ‘welded’ back together after? 🤦‍♀️ Thank you . First picture is the swollen one, second picture is my other hand for reference!

I took an allergic reaction to cleaning product and my hand got all swollen and I had to get my engagement rig cut off, our local HSamuel Jewellers had a tool that they used to cut it off.

left all rings off for about a month before getting them resized.

Thank you, I will ring around some jewellers tomorrow. Once the rings are off hopefully my finger will return to its normal state!

My fingers swelled in pregnancy and needed cut off (the string method didn't work for me). I just popped down to the GP after I phoned up to explain and a lovely nurse cut it off for me!

Balloonhearts · 01/10/2023 19:44

Have you tried ribbon? Loop it through on 2 sides and get someone to pull it straight up. Ice the hand first to reduce swelling as much as possible. Looks like it may work for you.

RandomButtons · 01/10/2023 19:46

Jeweller did it for free for me but wrecked the ring in the process, it’s not re-weldable so try everything first!

Crumbcatcher · 01/10/2023 19:47

I think you could get it off - really chill your hand, then vaseline.

Panda89 · 01/10/2023 19:52

I had an allergic reaction years ago and had to have my engagement ring cut off.
HM Samuel did it, it was very quick and easy.
Once my hand was back to normal size, a local independent jeweller repaired the ring for £30, you can’t even see where the repair was done, they did a great job!

Goherdy · 01/10/2023 19:52

I had mine cut off at a jewellers a few months back. Tried for ages to get it off before hand but it wasn’t moving. There are good YouTube videos which show techniques to try.

mine had been on for 30 years and I have basically “grown” a bit over that time. The jeweller used a can opener and basically sawed through the ring. It did get a bit hot and I had to tell him to stop/ continue.

that bit was free.

went back a month later for resizing and that cost £450 which I was a bit shocked about but was a poncey jewellers

I fell in a hiking situation, and ended up breaking my hand, while in a tiny island.
I had to wait for the tides to change to get a boat back to the mainland, to get to a hospital, by then it had swollen like crazy and both my engagement ring and wedding ring had to be cut off, in multiple pieces.

I was sure I'd get it mended, at a slightly larger size, due to the sentiment. There were 18k white gold.
I saw the price, and started wearing my great grandmother's band instead

I had mine cut of at fire station.

I had mine cut of at fire station.

I know someone who had theirs cut off at a fire station. Might be worth asking.

Zoomizoom · 01/10/2023 20:17

Has mine cut off in pregnancy, was free at a jewellers and then £200 to have them both put back together

Molly54320 · 01/10/2023 20:21

My fingers swelled in pregnancy. The doctor said I could get it cut at the hospital but that they care more about my finger than my ring and might do a bad job cutting it which might make it difficult for the jeweller to fix again!
So went to the jeweller where the rings came from, and they cut them for free. It will cost £30 each to get them fixed again (so £60 all together) so not a big cost!

AnneElliott · 01/10/2023 20:35

The fire service have sets of tools to take rings off. If you live close to a station pop down and they'll try and help.

GhostsInSnow · 01/10/2023 20:38

Wouldn’t be trying anything that might make the finger worse by trying to force them off. I’d go to the walk in tbh, they can also cut them off. If it’s swollen like that so far after the event it needs looking at properly.

KnowledgeableMomma · 01/10/2023 20:38

I broke my finger and needed a ring cut off. We had small enough tools we were able to do it at home but our jeweler friend (who repaired it after my finger was healed) said he cuts rings off for free. So a jeweler would totally cut it off for you.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/10/2023 20:39

I went to a local jeweller to have mine cut off. Though I think they stretched it more than necessary to get it off. But fortunately the setting isn't damaged.

CherrySocks · 01/10/2023 20:45

Waxed thread worked for me after watching a YouTube video

NewName122 · 01/10/2023 20:48

Cut it off ourselves to save going A&E when this happened. I couldn't watch and do not recommend it to people who do not have a trustworthy family member. Before this we tried the string trick (see youtube).

Insommmmnia · 01/10/2023 20:50

I had mine cut off at a fire station too, I had an MRI the next day and I'd tried everything I could at home, I didn't even think of a jewellers though, I feel bad for taking up the fire fighters time now

dogscatsandbabies · 01/10/2023 20:59

Have you lost any movement in your finger? Or does it move further than the others? There are a number of ligaments around that joint that can be injured when a finger is pulled / stretched. These ligaments can scar as they heal and create a permanent thickness to the joint

See if you can get some coban wrap (it's often known as vet wrap) and gently wrap some around the finger with no more than 50% stretch on the wrap. Keep that on for 3-4 hours and see if the swelling goes down a bit.

Counciltelly · 01/10/2023 21:06

I pulled the ligaments in my finger. X rayed and no Break but swollen and sore for 6 months plus. Ended up at orthopaedics and doctor there said it had healed very well considering. I’ve now 90% of movement back but as the previous poster says it is a bit squint looking.

Counciltelly · 01/10/2023 21:06

I did it by bending back my finger like you did

hellohelp · 01/10/2023 22:19

What else do firefighters do? I had no idea you could go to them for a ring stuck on your finger!

Is this a common thing to know that I've only now discovered?
