20 days annual leave is Dickensian

Most firms now start on 25. I think 20 just smacks of a mean firm and not a place you want to be. AIBU?

For "how lazy are today's workers" by CEOs on mix of ego and bad cocaine, I recommend reddit's linkedin lunatics 😁

Goldmember · 01/10/2023 17:03

I've never worked anywhere with more than Stat holidays or pensions and ive always been envious of those with 25days+.

However my current company is generous in other ways and flexible working from home works well for me, I don't need to book time off work for errands, appointments, home deliveries, tradespeople repairs etc. I'm gaining a few days at least for those every year.

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 01/10/2023 17:06

We have the option to buy extra holiday - the amount comes off your salary every month - or you can sell holiday (up to a week either way) using the same process, which I think is a good scheme.

'ewwwwww, gross. imagine having a work life balance rather than working their fingers to the bone and saying 'thank you, sir' for 10 days holiday. they're so lazy'

Europeans are too privileged to even comprehend working your fingers to the bone...laughable language really, just like the title of this thread.

you're very fond of a sweeping generalisation, aren't you?

So, who thinks we’re lazy?

The rest of the world. As per my original comment. It was one line...

ThatsLifeIGuess · 01/10/2023 17:10

I'm in Ireland. I have 10 BH days, 25 days annual leave. 3 of these days I have to take at Christmas.

I had 7 weeks of parents leave (plus 2 weeks paternity) in the last 2 years, so I'm not looking forward to going back to my standard amount... I'd love unlimited days and to have 40-50 days like PP, what a dream!

PuppyMonkey · 01/10/2023 17:10

I work at a small company and only get the bare minimum AL, 28 days including bank holidays. However the job is interesting but not too taxing, it’s a 5 minute commute, I finish at 4pm every day and as someone who spent many years self employed, I’m still quite amazed at being paid for any holidays at all TBH. Highly amusing how envious you so obviously are of europeans worker rights.

Which Europeans? I mean like we are not all homogenous group. We have different looks, food and attitudes. You know. Being a continent with different people on it.
It's like saying "people in Asia"

True, true. But this thread was in dire need of a bit of perspective I'm afraid.

TheLightProgramme · 01/10/2023 17:11

I wouldn't take a job with that.

In the last 15 yrs I've only taken jobs offering 25 + bh, with the option to buy 5 more.

With kids in school and a shortage of holiday provision in my area its the only way.

I'm the same, WFH 3 days a week. It is handy for those sort of small things, but it's unfortunately not the same as having the whole day to do what you like with and not be tied to the computer 😆

Justifiedcheese · 01/10/2023 15:06

No, Dickensian is no paid leave ever and a six day week.

Applies to plenty of us who are self-employed in small businesses 🫣 28 days' paid leave with one day off per week sounds positively luxurious!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/10/2023 17:13

My old place had 20 and you had to take 4 for Xmas as well. That was horrible

lampformyfeet · 01/10/2023 17:14

20 + 8 is standard in my profession.

ShinyPebble32 · 01/10/2023 17:14

Laughs in self employed

DazedandConcerned · 01/10/2023 17:14

I used to get 10 days a year in Canada. I love my 20 + bank

Oblomov23 · 01/10/2023 17:14

Loads of firms offer the minimum. 5.6 weeks, which is 28 days, which is 20 days plus BH's. So yes many only offer 20 days. It is allowed. Not illegal. Shitty but allowed.

Fabshab · 01/10/2023 17:16

@Goldmember many employers offer both, flexibility and good annual leave policies.

I have unlimited annual leave, WFH 3 days a week, have every Monday off (Flexi request) and work is so flexible outside of that too. Plus free ice cream 2 days a week over the summer which is great (for those not in the office we get a voucher to get a pack of ice creams or can expense a couple a week!)

ThatsLifeIGuess · 01/10/2023 17:17

20 plus BH is awful. 2 weeks summer hols, week for Christmas, then you have 5 meagre days left for incidental events and no other decent breaks the whole rest of the year.

PuppyMonkey · 01/10/2023 17:18

What if you don’t want an ice cream every day? Grin

I'm sure you know you are in the lucky 1%!? Don't get yourself fired! 😄

PuppyMonkey · 01/10/2023 17:19

Oops I see it’s only two days a week, my bad!

ExtraOnions · 01/10/2023 17:21

I get 30 plus Bank Holidays … it’s a great allowance, I wouldn’t move for less holiday …
