How to butter a bread roll

Lauralaaaa · 30/09/2023 22:00

My darling boyfriend kindly made me a ham bread roll after my 12.5 hour shift. He asked if I wanted butter and I said yes please. I come home to find he has buttered one side of the roll and left the other plain. He claims you make more work for yourself if you butter both sides, just double up on the one side.

He does this with a normal sandwich as well apparently. I may have to end the relationship.

Please tell me I’m not going crazy and he’s a lunatic.

YABU- only butter one side
YANBU- butter both sides

He says you can’t have butter and mayo together on a sandwich.

This keeps getting worse.

The man is obviously a complete and total Philistine.

Save yourself!
Run for the hills and don't look back!

Neither of you are correct.
Butter should only be present if it is the filling. EG crusty bread and butter, hot toast and butter etc. No properly made sandwich or roll needs butter, the filling should speak for itself. I once spent an overly long week in a hotel in Swindon on a work trip. ‘Sandwiches’ were provided. The butter - on both sides of the bread - was thicker than the filling. A Spanish colleague declared them ‘Unspeakable’. She was correct.
😂

She was not.

How is the poor filling supposed to stick without butter or mayo? How is there to be harmony within a sandwich with no unifying glue?? And why would you entertain the views of a woman from a nation where the only sandwich option is ham and (bland and sweaty) cheese???

Obviously the main filling is the main event in a sandwich, but the bit part players have a role too. Like housemaids in Downton. Or similar.

I've never heard anything so terrible! Monster. Akin to American sammich making.

QueenBitch666 · 01/10/2023 01:34

Butter both sides with cruelty free "butter"
( yes it's a thing )
Add torture / murder free vegan " ham " ( also a thing )
Job done 👌

Only a vegan would reply to a thread asking how to butter a roll giving a lecture on how we should all be holier than thou, self sacrificing vegans instead of people with our own minds, views & opinions

I'm sure there are vegan boards somewhere or you could start a separate post on how to 'turn' us heathens

Both sides of any sandwich/roll/baguette should always be buttered, unless:

  • Filling is a wet filling (tuna/egg mayo, cream cheese, hummus etc.)
  • Using a sauce - in which case it can be one side sauce one side butter or both sides sauce, eater’s preference. No piece of bread should have both sauce and butter on, as it will clag.

<gavel>

CrochetedOwl · 01/10/2023 07:33

I have never buttered both sides in a sandwich. Never heard of anyone who does.
It goes like this:
Bottom slice butter
Ham/cheese/insert any other filling
Wet on top eg tomato or cucumber
Top unbuttered slice

ShadowPuppets · 01/10/2023 07:33

Oh and Pret A Manger literally sell their ham roll as a ‘jambon buerre’ - the butter is literally in the name of the sandwich. I don’t always see eye to eye with Pret but we can all agree that the French know how to make a good ham roll. So OP’s partner is definitely BU.

PinkTonic · 01/10/2023 07:34

Obviously the top half needs to be buttered as it is contact with the salad items and butter is required to prevent soggy bread.

CrochetedOwl · 01/10/2023 07:35

My ds takes it one step further and doesn't butter either side and just has sliced cheese in the middle 😂

DisforDarkChocolate · 01/10/2023 07:37

My husband does this, or none at all. Luckily he is fantastic in bed.

Oysterbabe · 01/10/2023 07:37

He claims you make more work for yourself if you butter both sides, just double up on the one side.

That's next level laziness.

BlueKaftan · 01/10/2023 07:49

Butter on one side and mustard on the other side. You get the moisture and flavour of both.

Clevs · 01/10/2023 07:58

I only butter the bottom piece of bread or bottom of the roll. I thought that was normal but it's clearly not!

ShagratandGorbag4ever · 01/10/2023 07:59

I bet he doesn't even cut the crusts off.

PimpMyFridge · 01/10/2023 08:03

This sounds like the tip of the iceberg! ⛳

quickqpls · 01/10/2023 08:21

LTB. One dry piece of bread flapping about? No thanks.

LynetteScavo · 01/10/2023 08:34

I once worked for an American (I think that's relevant) who got very grumpy when I made them a peanut butter sandwich with butter. They said peanut butter was like ham- you don't put butter in the sandwich.

WTAF?

Many years later I still think they're wrong.

See I would butter both slices in a sandwich, but only the bottom of a roll. It's one entity, so not quite the same as a sandwich which could be eaten either way around! Usually there is some kind of sauce on top of a roll anyway, but not always.

Question to those who butter the top of a roll: would you still butter the top if it was a roll with
A) sausages
B) a burger
C) a "wet" filling like tuna/egg mayo?

Answers on a postcard, please.

(FWIW, DH doesn't butter the top of a roll, nor does anyone in either of our families, so this is a new concept to us!)

A) yes
B) yes
C) yes

I like butter in my sandwiches and/or rolls. It would never occur to me to not butter both sides. That's just doing half a job.

All these people who say oh I butter both sides if it's this type of sandwich/roll/filling but not this type of....why though? Is it just laziness?

WirKindervomBahnhofZoo · 01/10/2023 09:08

STBEH did this ...

Mum2aTeen · 01/10/2023 09:19

I grew up this way but never butter as that is too fattening and so unhealthy (according to everyone in the 80's/90's here (Australia) so we used no fat margarine and spread very thinly) when I met my DP he was like what on earth is this my whole inlaws spread both sides that was totally new to me I didn't understand it at all.
When I first tasted butter, it was like a thing I've missed all my life so delicious.
These days if I think of it I'll spread either butter or margarine on both sides or sometimes we just use cheese (as if we use cheese definitely no butter as to me that makes no sense at all we don't use Mayo either but we don't like Mayo my partner is allergic to it and I'm not a fan of the taste.
It's so different everywhere I still shocked sometimes over something so little but trivial.

It's just how I was taught growing up, same for DH. You butter the bottom of a roll then add fillings. Nobody ever buttered the top. Can't really explain it beyond that! Other than, as I said, there's often sauce on top of whatever is on a roll.

I've never considered not buttering both slices of a sandwich though - again, everyone in both families always buttered both slices too, so it's never been in question! But it's less likely to have a sauce. E.g. a cheese sandwich would be a bit strange without butter on one side, but a bacon roll with brown sauce on top isn't as big a deal.

sadaboutmycat · 01/10/2023 09:30

My mother always did that. Sandwich fell apart.
He needs training 😂😂😂
