How to butter a bread roll

Lauralaaaa · 30/09/2023 22:00

My darling boyfriend kindly made me a ham bread roll after my 12.5 hour shift. He asked if I wanted butter and I said yes please. I come home to find he has buttered one side of the roll and left the other plain. He claims you make more work for yourself if you butter both sides, just double up on the one side.

He does this with a normal sandwich as well apparently. I may have to end the relationship.

Please tell me I’m not going crazy and he’s a lunatic.

YABU- only butter one side
YANBU- butter both sides

That’s a new one 😂 Been married to the DH for 30+ years - he makes toast, too much butter, I scrape it off … but the important thing is he makes breakfast and does house cleaning. I forgive the butter technique

Also there is no such thing as too much butter on toast 👀 if it’s not promising to clog my arteries then it’s not enough.

Lauralaaaa · 30/09/2023 22:46

Now he’s saying “none of them have explained why though”

I have tried to explain for continuity and evenness. Also to make things stick together.

Has anyone got any other ways of explaining this to someone who quite clearly needs professional help.

I have never buttered both halves/sides of filled roll or sandwich.

toomuchfaster · 30/09/2023 22:51

You will all hate me as I wouldn't butter either side! Bit of cheese, bit of cucumber and squash it shut.

randomrandom · 30/09/2023 22:57

YANBU, that is definite LTB territory- one side of dry bread 😱

SeaToSki · 30/09/2023 23:02

Well the reason you butter both sides is clearly that

the only thing better than some butter..is more butter. And when the butter is in contact with the bread, it is thinner, exposed to more air which starts to warm it and activates the flavour and so it tastes better..so you have to spread it out just thin and thick enough to cover every scrap of bread and not just glob it on in a big wodge on one side.

Howlongwillthistake · 30/09/2023 23:02

Butter is there to moisten the bread. It has to be on both slices for evenness surely 🤨

nocoolnamesleft · 30/09/2023 23:03

It's about proportions of different food substances to produce the right balance of flavour, and mouth feel, as well as the assistance it gives to maintenance of structural integrity of the sandwich. Also, it's that there's a right way to make a sandwich, and this is not it.

Does he make tea in a microwave, for pity's sake?

elrider · 30/09/2023 23:04

See I would butter both slices in a sandwich, but only the bottom of a roll. It's one entity, so not quite the same as a sandwich which could be eaten either way around! Usually there is some kind of sauce on top of a roll anyway, but not always.

Question to those who butter the top of a roll: would you still butter the top if it was a roll with
A) sausages
B) a burger
C) a "wet" filling like tuna/egg mayo?

Answers on a postcard, please.

(FWIW, DH doesn't butter the top of a roll, nor does anyone in either of our families, so this is a new concept to us!)

mondaytosunday · 30/09/2023 23:06

YABU. Though actually wouldn't butter either side. I'd use mustard or mayo (on one side still).

jenpil · 30/09/2023 23:10

Lauralaaaa · 30/09/2023 22:12

He said and I quote “it’s a topper, why would it need grip?”

He also said he’s never had a sandwich where the bread falls off.

He seems very set in his ways unfortunately.

But what if it wasn't a roll, but a sandwich, that technically doesn't have a "topper" as both top and bottom are equal....would he only butter one side then?!

A. Butter both sides so it melts with the hot sausages

B. I wouldn't butter top or bottom but would use a sauce or relish

C. I wouldn't butter

I generally only butter the bottom because I normally add salad and have mayonnaise as the top layer so it does the job instead.

Daffyyellow · 30/09/2023 23:29

So you would recoil in horror at today’s lunch! Baguette, bacon as the filling, nothing on the baguette as it was supposed to be avocado mixed with French dressing, but I ended up having it on the side!! It was scrumptious and definitely not dry or under-flavoured.

That would have been so much better with some butter.

airfresh123 · 30/09/2023 23:42

Butter on both slices…absolutely normal. Anything else is ridiculous/ travesty!

TheMurderousGoose · 30/09/2023 23:45

Lauralaaaa · 30/09/2023 22:13

He says you can’t have butter and mayo together on a sandwich.

This keeps getting worse.

Well he's right.

What kind of freak puts both butter and mayo on a sandwich? Demented behaviour.

My criteria for perfect balance - butter sinks in 👍🏼
But, the DH a star, so if he has different butter quantity bar, I’m cool

obje · 30/09/2023 23:54

I've got no idea why but if I'm having a sandwich I butter both slices of bread. If I'm having a roll I butter the bottom only.

Never questioned myself on this til now but I feel a bit weird and unsure about myself now as I can't justify the difference in approach

Seryse · 30/09/2023 23:55

You officially have my first LTB @Lauralaaaa . You don't need that kind of negativity!

(I have issues, I get REALLY annoyed if the bread/roll isn't buttered evenly and no bits left bare)

Ohthatsabitshit · 01/10/2023 00:09

Tell him, when you swim the channel you don’t only grease one side of your body. Does he want to create a world where cross channel swimmers are losing vital parts to this madness? I think he’s dangerous.

WaxhamSeals · 30/09/2023 22:14

I love a nice crusty roll with just ham & butter in it. You can clearly identify each separate flavour. It’s pure & simple goodness.
Obviously I butter both sides lavishly

Fair enough. I think the last time I had a plain ham roll I was on some sort of school trip 30+ years ago. Is there anything more depressing than a warm finger roll with a sweaty slice of value ham and a generous helping of margarine?

You’d butter a burger?!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 01/10/2023 00:55

Neither of you are correct.
Butter should only be present if it is the filling. EG crusty bread and butter, hot toast and butter etc. No properly made sandwich or roll needs butter, the filling should speak for itself. I once spent an overly long week in a hotel in Swindon on a work trip. ‘Sandwiches’ were provided. The butter - on both sides of the bread - was thicker than the filling. A Spanish colleague declared them ‘Unspeakable’. She was correct.
😂

What sticks the bread to the filling if it’s not buttered?!

is he willing to learn OP?

Be generous and give him another chance, if this is the only 🚩- but he needs to learn quickly. Very quickly 💐
