To be worried about DH symptom

Hi all,
i am panicked about DH toe.
its recently just got floppy, like it just hangs, like it’s dead. He can’t lift it. It’s so weak. It’s not sore but he still has sensation has just lost control of it. He’s been tripping up because of it.
I’m worried it’s an early symptom of motor neurone disease. I know someone who had that condition it and it and it started when they noticed a weak digit then for worse from there on.
what else could it be? Could it be something not worrying?

in so worried.
thanks x

I would be worried to. I'm sure it could be due to any number of things, not necessarily MND but I'd definitely be getting it checked out x

Glumgal · 30/09/2023 12:55

*too

Pumpkinpie1 · 30/09/2023 12:55

He needs to see a doctor asap

ohsuzannah · 30/09/2023 15:54

Is h

ohsuzannah · 30/09/2023 15:57

I'm so sorry. Dog jogged my arm!
I meant to say has he been diagnosed diabetic.? Neuropathy can be one of the symptoms and my SIL had to have several toes removed. Not trying to frighten you, but please get it checked out asap 😰

Worryworry84 · 30/09/2023 18:19

Thanks all.
I really am worried. I have told DH he needs to get it checked but I haven’t let him know how worried I am.
He is terrible for getting things checked, as in he never gets round to it!
I want him to get it checked ASAP but I don’t want him to know how worried I am :(

How long has it been like that? If it was me I would have been straight to the doctor with that - sounds horrible. Could you try 111?

GabriellaMontez · 30/09/2023 18:32

There are other things it could be... eg related to a back problem... but obviously he needs to see the Dr!

MsFrost · 30/09/2023 18:35

I agree with others, it needs to be looked at by a doctor.

Try not to jump straight to MND in your mind though - there is a huge number of things it could be and MND is probably among the worst and also least likely. But he definitely needs to see a doctor.

He just told me a couple days ago, he’d just noticed it after tripping over it a few times over the course of a few days..
he still feels all sensation.

I want to force him to the doctor asap but I don’t want him to know how worried I am. How to I make him get it checked without adding stress and worry?

I know. I think I am so worried as it is so similar to to someone I know who had MND so I can’t help but jump there in my mind.
i am freaking out more my the minute!

I am sure it probably isn't, but of course you are worried and will jump to that conclusion with the experience of the person you know. If he is the type to avoid the doctor, you might need to tell him you are really worried... I agree he should go.

heldinadream · 01/10/2023 07:55

Sorry but I think not wanting to worry him is daft, he SHOULD be worried, it's a worrying symptom and he should see a Dr ASAP and nothing else matters really.
Good luck OP.

Oysterbabe · 01/10/2023 08:00

He must see a doctor ASAP.
I would be worried too. I hope he's OK.

I know it’s daft. I am massively overthinking- but I guess I’m so worried that I am certain why it is- and I guess I don’t want him to spend the time between now and going to the doctor worrying when it could be his last few care free days in case the dr has bad news and I know that’s stupid and I’ve honeslty gone into panic mode

Yes he is the type to avoid. He just puts it off all the time. He’s been due an eye test for his knows how long. You are right I will need to let him know how worried I am but I’ll wait for the kids to go back to their mums

I have a degree of neuropathy in both feet. I have had Type 2 diabetes for the last thirty years. I manage it by my careful attention to symptoms of needing carbohydrates and fluids and not ignoring these symptoms. Pre-diagnosis, I found myself flat on my back on a London Tube platform, being stepped over by people who thought that I was a drunk. It took me a while to stabilise my symptoms and manage my fluctuations of weight, but I have it sorted now. The neuropathy hasn't improved, but neither has it worsened.
I think getting your husband to a GP as soon as possible is vital. Getting a diagnosis will indicate the best way forward for both of you.

Worryworry84 · 20/10/2023 08:07

Thansk all.
just came to update as you’ve all taken the time to say something.

My DH did go to dr, she thinks is more mechanical rather than medical so here’s hoping! She thinks maybe a slipped disc but is shocked he hasn’t felt any pain from that if it’s the case.
he gave blood yesterday so they can rule things out and he will get an mri scan.

she checked for muscle weakness and said there is an imbalance - he is slightly weaker on the left side so she doesn’t think it’s a vitamin b deficiency but will rule that out too.

so fingers crossed it is something that can be fixed! Or at least stopped from getting worse!
we have a Little one who arrived after a long wait last year, and DH is struggling to run after etc :/
thanks x

DH has had an MRI scan on his back which was clear, and his blood tests (which he said were checking for vitamin b deficiency) came back normal.

so the GP is confused and referring him to a neurologist and now I am panicking again! 😭

Are there less worrying things this could be?

Has it got any worse?

DH finds this hard to answer as he says maybe he’s just more conscious about it now!
but it did start with one toe and now it’s two, and I’m trying not to panic but I can’t help it 😭

Sending you so much love

Thank you so much. He has had a referral to neurology and the appointment is later this month. Fingers crossed it’s nothing bad but he’s been dropping things more often these days and his knees have given way a couple times (not to the point he has fallen but almost..) it’s scary but at least they are looking into it and hopefully it’s something that can be fixed x

OP posts:
heldinadream · 04/02/2024 09:09

Oh gosh @Worryworry84 this is still going on, and getting worse? When's his appointment?
I hope it proves to be something simple and easily sorted. Very best wishes to you and DH and DCs. How is he coping with it now, is he still a bit blasé or getting more visibly worried?
