to think University students without particular needs do not need an en-suite shower room?

I'm so surprised that University Halls of Residence now offer this as an option to more or less all their students. What the hell? How many of you are indulging your offspring with this poncery and why? (exceptional needs aside of course).

When I went to Uni in the dark ages of the 1980s no one had an ensuite. Almost no one had a wash basin either. Is it a money making exercise?

New build houses are the same. Not every bedroom needs separate washing/bathing facilities. The first world's gone mad!

I had an ensuite university room in the 90s. It's because in the holidays they rented the rooms out to conferences/events.

dh recently stayed in some halls of residence (over summer) briefly for an event. It was an ensuite room.

Convenient and safe I imagine?

Parker231 · 28/09/2023 16:57

DT’s had their own bathroom at home so why not the same at Uni?

oistopthatyoucheekysnail · 28/09/2023 17:00

Is this a new concept? I had an en suite 15 years ago at uni.

Redmat · 28/09/2023 17:01

Back in the late 70s our washroom had about 20 basins with cubicles and swing type doors. The partitions came up as far as your head. Cleaning your teeth and washing in the morning was a very social occasion. No showers just a row of baths but the partitions nearly went up to the ceiling in this case. As we all shared rooms it was the only place you could get any privacy at all, though we still lay in the warm water shouting at each other.
They were three of the happiest years of my life!
Nothing stays the same.

Indeed, and it was shite. Sharing a grotty toilet and shower room down the corridor with a load of random strangers. The first halls i was in were so awful, my "view" was out onto a light well.

DD is in a bright, modern flat with a warm comfortable room and an ensuite shower room. Happy to pay for it.

not4profit · 28/09/2023 17:28

I agree OP. I encouraged all mine as students to go for cheaper washbasin rooms. No one needs an ensuite. Could I afford it for them? Absolutely. Would I pay for it - definitely not.

Dweetfidilove · 28/09/2023 17:45

Given the hygiene and cleaning standards on MN alone, I’ll pay the little bit extra so my daughter doesn’t have to shower in her flip flops or need a disinfectant wipe for every toilet visit.

The hygiene and cleaning standards in most public bathrooms in general alone is enough for me to pay extra.

Gerrataere · 28/09/2023 17:53

I lived in mixed halls with one shower and two toilets shared between 8/10 people. So taking a shower was 1. Chancing it being free 2. Gross 3. Hoping that none of the men decided if was funny to try and catch a peek 4. Meaning having to put your clothes back on in a damp shared bathroom before going back to your room. I moved out after a year, it’s not an experience anyone (especially young women straight out of home) should go through.

I think you might have mis-quoted me. I'm not a shit parent for not paying for the en-suite option for my two Uni student DC? Just dropped my son off at Uni where his rent is £170 p/w (no ensuite) not in London or Oxford/Cambridge - and there are two loos and two showers per landing of 5 rooms. I think he can survive. The ensuite option is £210 p/w.

Well my dd chose en-suite accommodation for £123 a week, so I think she got the better deal. Maybe everyone’s circumstances aren’t the same as yours!

Right 😅. Who wants to put up with other people’s filth if it can be avoided 😔.

No one needs some level of privacy when washing and going to the loo? For at least year? I’m not sure why someone should miss out on basic sanitary comforts (and in some cases, personal welfare) just because they’re a student…

Motheranddaughter · 28/09/2023 18:18

Lots of things have improved since the 80s
I can afford for a good standard of accommodation including en suite facilities, and that is what I do

I think the same about all indoor toilets, it was much better when it was an outhouse in the garden - the world has gone soft

An outhouse in the garden. Bloody luxury, I tell yer. In my day it were just an 'ole int ground 😚

Topseyt123 · 28/09/2023 18:38

My DD1 had an ensuite during her first year at uni when she was in halls. Most of the halls where she went were ensuite as far as I could tell. Not "poncery" at all. Just how the buildings were designed.

In her second year she shared a house off campus with some of the people she had come to know in first year. No ensuites there, only shared. No problem either. Same for the rest of her time at uni.

My DD3 is just going into her final year at a different uni. All years are in hall, but old and historic buildings and few ensuites. Mostly shared facilities. Again, no problems.

I actually think your "poncery" comment is quite ridiculous really. I agree with others. Next time you book a holiday book accommodation with only shared toilet and shower facilities. A campsite perhaps.

After all, that's how it would have been back in the 1950s and 60s with guest houses and hostels and people coped then, so surely wanting your own ensuite bathroom in a hotel is just high class "poncery", right?

I don't know what you imagine the shared facilities are like? They were perfectly adequate and none of my young adults were traumatised by them.

Never seen Below Deck? Funny it’s ok to share crap facilities if you’re on a nice yacht or maybe a ski chalet.

If you can’t do it when you’re 19, 20, 21 when can you? Those are the years you don’t care about “ normal rules”. We are doing our young people a disservice by giving them an adult rules experience, at the cost of any actual experience. Especially with the implications that you are “paying for” better and having your own facilities is “better” at Uni.
I’ve got a socially anxious not child that wanted a en suite. He didn’t get it. I was disappointed but frankly hes’s a better more confident adult for it. He’s knows he’s a student, it’s three years of whatever weird student life throws up and not forever.

Howlongdoesittake · 28/09/2023 19:06

We paid extra for my daughter to have an em-suire. We can afford it, so why not?

Since when are 18-21 year olds not adults?

Shared bathrooms are not all the same. It also depends on who you are sharing with

DD2 had shared bathrooms. The dominant personalities in her flat were on a year long drink and drugs bender. You do not want to find you are sharing any sort of bathroom facility with people who are testing the limits of their drink/drugs tolerance.

I think it’s great. Who wouldn’t want an en suite.

Me.

Laughing because we had to walk 20 yards, go down a staircase and along a corridor to the bathrooms.

So precious. Presume you never use a toilet anywhere anyone might know that's what you're doing?
You're one of those "an ensuite is a basic human right" loons aren't you?

Eleganz · 29/09/2023 08:16

I shared a room during my first year to uni. Wouldn't wish that on anyone really.

That said, OP is right that no-one needs an ensuite, but pretty much all modern student accommodation is ensuite so what are you going to do?

Presume you're not a female who's ever felt their private space has been invaded by a penis.

Surely the problems with sharing accommodation with such individuals goes far beyond bathroom facilities? An ensuite would hardly have made such a situation bearable really.
