To think vaping should be banned

I've just been watching the BBC 10 o'clock news. Lead story the rise in young people addicted to vaping. Rise in severe stomach pains and lung problems in young folk caused by vaping. Those horrid vaping shops are springing up everywhere. They are a curse as is tobacco. Its really worrying.

I find it odd that vapes were even even legal and easily purchased. Should on prescription to help with giving up smoking and a weaning off programme followed. Why are humans so stupid to create and then buy such destructive things.

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 27/09/2023 07:56

I can't comment on what others do, but I prefer cigarettes - better the devil you know.

catgirl1976 · 27/09/2023 08:06

YABU

Vaping is 95 percent less harmful than smoking, is not harmful to people around it and is very successful in reducing smoking. In the UK vape liquid etc is well regulated

Disposable vapes should be banned though. They are terrible for the environment and too accessible for children. Cheap unregulated vape liquid should be banned and the child friendly marketing should stop with significant sanctions for anyone selling to children. Cigarettes should be banned NZ style which I believe is being considered.

But regulated, toxin free vape liquid and long use mods should not be banned, no.

My partner vaped for about two months to get off the fags. And that was it- to stop smoking. It didn’t become a new habit altogether. I think they’re great if using them for a while stops people smoking.

catgirl1976 · 27/09/2023 08:08

Oh and all the “popcorn lung” stuff and the study a PP mentioned from the university of Michigan is in America where it’s not regulated like it is here

Yahyahs22 · 27/09/2023 08:15

I think the throw away ones should. To quit smoking, I went to a vape. It's helping massively. The coil of my vape r burned out recently and my local shop doesn't sell them, so I got a throw away one until I was able to get to the vape shop. It was awful. Tastes far more chemically, hurt the back of my throat and realised it was 3x stronger than what I vape and you don't get to choose the strength.
It's so bad how easy it is for kids to get hold of. My niece told me she's able to get them because her friends nan buys them for her. I was furious. She's 14.

Coming from experience, I think the multi-use ones are very helpful to those who want to quit smoking, but absolutely despise the throw away ones.

SpacePotato · 27/09/2023 08:19

The issue round my area is teens and preteens vaping, often with the parents buying them, which is ridiculous as they wouldn't buy them a pack of cigarettes.

11 and 12 year olds, not just the older teens.

B00kWoman · 27/09/2023 08:22

I have a 19 year old who is now smoking when she doesn’t have the money to fund her addiction to vapes .

We don’t just need the things banned we need bloody help for those with young adults left with an addiction thanks to inaction and a couldn’t give a shit attitude from this government.

TheFormidableMrsC · 27/09/2023 08:26

Vaping got me off a 30 year smoking habit. My cough went, I could run again without getting out of breath within a fortnight. I do hate the disposable ones though. I agree with a PP about them tasting vile and being too strong. I think they should be banned. It upsets me seeing youngsters vaping. It's been life changing for me and my bank account.

But a lot of the marketing to children is linked to the colours, design and flavours.

I'm not a fan of saying vapes must be flavourless but I do think that candyfloss, bubblegum, sweet style flavours shouldn't be allowed.

I've no skin in the game, but on balance I'm more than happy to put children's health first and much tightly regulate designs and flavours, even if it means a few adults who like chewits-flavoured vapes might have to pick another flavouring.

I don't understand this - cigarettes and rolling tobacco is far, far more expensive that vapes so how on earth is she smoking when she can't afford a vape???

No vaping shouldn't be 'banned'.... the reasons you give are a bit odd

YANBU to find it worrying that children and teens are using vapes. Something definitely needs to be done to tackle the issue.

However, YABU to want vaping banned completely. If used correctly, electronic cigarettes are an extremely useful aid in weaning smokers off the cigarettes.

I was coming on here to say this. Vaping (alongside nicotine patches) was the only way to get my dyed in the wool 40+ a day smoker mother off the cigarettes she had been addicted to for 60 years.

If vaping was not available my sister and I would still be having to breathe in her massive clouds of smoke and really, anything is an improvement on that. I can now breathe in her house, which I do have to visit due to her age and declining mobility and health.

Single use vapes should be totally banned and the regulations around the sale of vape products to children must be rigourously policed. Surely it is already banned, and if it isn't then it should be.

So vaping has its place, but shouldn't be abused, as it is at the moment.

OllieCollieWoo · 27/09/2023 12:38

I visit secondary schools as part of my job and one theme in the last few weeks in all the schools I visit has been the amount of Y7 students vaping in the loos. All reporting it's a big issue theyvare dealing with. Some schools have bought detection equipment to spot the vapes (young people wear shorts under school trousers and hide the vape in pockets).

Went to a primary school last week and the HT was in shock at having found 2 Y6 pupils with vape.

The vaping companies are producing vape flavours and packaging aimed at young people, making it seem attractive.

There's not enough medical evidence as yet on the impact for people especially young people still growing and developing.

It needs a rethink, not promoting to young people.

And is it true you can get ones with cannabis in ? Heard you can get "special ones" .

That quote was from a speech made at the World Dental Congress held in Sydney this week. Australia is now taking a hard stance on vaping. I wouldn't touch the things.

perenniallymessy · 27/09/2023 13:43

I wouldn't ban vaping, but I think there needs to be better legislation around vaping as they are so hugely prevalent amongst teens and pre-teens.

My DS1 is 14 and says he sees loads of others at school vaping, either to/from school or sneaking into hidden areas of the playground to vape. Apparently there are loads of shops perfectly willing to sell them to teens and the flavours and price of the disposable vapes make them really attractive to teens.

I think they should ban disposable vapes, or at the very least put a high environmental tax on them. They should also require all sellers to be licensed with penalties for anyone caught selling to under 18s. There should be tax on vaping and studies on the effects of vaping to see if further restrictions are needed.

skyeisthelimit · 27/09/2023 14:10

Something needs to be done to stop teens from taking it up. I know young adults who have been anti smoking their entire life, yet are happy to vape

DD's HT has sent home another letter today about Vaping and it says that any pupils caught vaping in uniform, or on the bus will be put in detention and banned from the bus.

DD has friends 14-15 whose parents let them vape and buy vapes for them. DD thinks this is ridiculous.
