To order children’s meals when out

sometimes when I go out I order of the children’s menu when the food is the same as the adults. I find the portion size for adults food can be way to big for me. I’m a normal size 12 and eat reasonably healthy. It’s not something I do everywhere as some
places can be stingy on portions or don’t allow it. Before now I’ve asked for smaller portions of say a pasta and Been happy to pay the same just hate wasting food. If it’s like pizza I know I can easily take the leftovers home and my partner will eat them. Also the calories can be huge in a meal.

My 92 year old MIL does and no one bats an eyelid. I know some places don’t like it though, as it is seen as not wanting to pay full price.

Brewers Fayre used to do a menu for small appetites which was great. If I went to GBK I always used to order the 6oz burger but was refused alcohol even though I had ID as they “weren’t allowed to serve alcohol with a child meal” 🙄.

hahaha my mega hungry 12 year old used to do this to - he would order the kid's meal and his granny the adult meal, then they would swap plates when the food was served haha

I hate food waste too and am also not going to force myself to eat a full dish. I often research restaurants to see their portion sizes beforehand so I know if I should order one course or two. Pre-pandemic I had gotten weird looks at some places for asking if I could take my unfinished food away. Don’t have the issue now, of course.

Saying that, I do collection or delivery though off the kids menu. Favourite is Prezzo where I’ll get the kids salad (love the dressing) and a kids carbonara as a meal for myself.

So I live in the US and I think it's well known our portion sizes are insane, so I don't know the sizes you're dealing with, but I always get the kids meal. I've never in my life had anyone protest. It's cheaper, the perfect size, and no waste as you said. "Doggy bags" are a huge part of our culture and that makes it more sensible, and I will do that if the restaurant only has chicken nuggets or a burger for the kids meal. But it is ridiculous to pay for two meals when going out. I wish eating out was healthier with more sensible portions.

Another thread had several posters saying a grown man ordering a Happy Meal gave them the ick.

If they let you then go for it. Even if its because you want nuggets and fish fingers.

That's just strange. Happy meals are perfect for lunchtime.

That being said, my dh wouldn't get one. I do though.

I'm guessing it's the inclusion of a toy that makes it a particularly surprising choice for an adult.

You can decline the toy, and the box.

When I say no box I've been asked if I want the toy. If there are no children to give the toy to I either say no, or take it and save it chuck it in the back of the car for when I see my nieces and nephews.

@Ivegotsunshineinabag Ordered what? A happy meal?

No I haven't tbh, as I've been swerving mcds, but they don't force you to have the box or toy. Even if they insisted you took it, which they don't, you could just leave it on the counter.

9 times out of 10 they will ask if I want the box or if just putting it in a bag/on the tray is fine, which it is, I don't want the box.

I worked there when I was at school and was told to ask if the box/toy was wanted if it looked like the happy meal wasn't for a child. It's in mcds favour if you dont take the box/toy.

What do you mean by that comment? Have you been forced to take a happy meal toy that you didn't want Confused
