For 18 year old son to get a dog

Aibu to think it's a stupid idea for my 18 year old son to get a dog off Facebook for free. He doesn't live at home he lives in a shared house that doesn't allow animals so his friend and girlfriend will have it staying at there houses. But he will be responsible for it he doesn't work so is living off less then £300 a month.

He's stupid. He has no way of looking after a dog if hes having to pass it around between his mates and girlfriends he is being totally irresponsible. His girlfriend being in supported accommodation she probably isn't really allowed a dog those places have rules to follow if she has the dog there when she shouldn't she could face eviction. You probably can't stop him if he won't listen to reason

Sadless · 27/09/2023 10:31

He's got it

He's got it

Aargh
have you made it clear that you will not be be helping in any way?

Sadless · 27/09/2023 11:20

I have told him that I can't afford to help.
I just can't believe that someone who's had this dog for a couple of years can just get rid to someone they don't know.
They don't care

That is stupid and cruel. He does not have an appropriate living situation for a dog. How will he pay for its food, vet bills, vaccines etc.

SquishyGloopyBum · 27/09/2023 13:40

The poor poor dog.

Riverlee · 27/09/2023 13:45

Does he think he can tag this dog into your pet insurance?

TPMG · 27/09/2023 13:52

You need to be super clear that it's his dog and whatever happens that you want no part of it. There will be no money coming from you, it won't live at your house and then let him get on with it. He is an adult, he isn't listening and it's not your issue. Xx

Patchworksack · 27/09/2023 14:00

Sigh. Recipe for disaster.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 27/09/2023 14:01

Nothing you can do now but I would be making it crystal clear, you will not be helping in any way no walking, having in your house, no money nothing

McrUk · 27/09/2023 16:14

Looks like they bred the dog for money and now they have no room for him/her. That is evil and these people should not be allowed dogs period 😡

McrUk · 27/09/2023 16:17

That dog is a cross Lab. It has a Lab in it and one can see that by the shape of its head but probably a bully cross. I have a Lab and that isn’t a pure bred Lab.

pilates · 27/09/2023 16:32

How very sad 😞

Onemonthtofindandbuy · 27/09/2023 16:43

Oh no op. What a nightmare. I agree with those saying it looks like a cane corso/lab cross. If so it really needs a lot of consistency in its training, and the worry is if it has been well trained or not up to now. Highly unlikely given that its owners were happy to just give it away to anybody. It would be much better being given up to a rescue centre that can assess it and find as suitable foster to deal with any issues it might have. I really hope your son quickly sees sense and does what’s best for the poor dog.

Sadless · 27/09/2023 21:19

It's a cane corso now been told its just over 1 years old. He came around to the house with it. It seems friendly enough but he said the owner said if he has any problems not to get rid take it back to her. Hes booked into the vets for a check up next week and he's looked into insurance. I can tell he really like it and has all these ideas but it's just not the right time. I feel really sorry for that dog it won't know what's going on.

Insurance is going to be expensive for a cane corso!! As will the food bill. She'll need a good quality food, not a supermarket own brand filled with junk. Has he researched the breed at all? Not one to take on lightly!

Freezingcoldinseptember · 28/09/2023 14:12

How old are the puppies? She has no sagggy bits but don't know how long til doggy boobs go back to normal....

ACynicalDad · 28/09/2023 14:26

A dog can be a 15-year commitment, he doesn't know what's going on in six months, let alone 15 years. Suggest he waits until he's settled in his own accomodation.

Sadless · 25/09/2023 17:04

This is the dog

That's part Great Dane. Very strong dogs.

OrlandointheWilderness · 28/09/2023 17:56

Not a breed for an inexperienced keeper. They need training, boundaries and exercise. Nog much you can do OP.

WiddlinDiddlin · 28/09/2023 18:02

Oh great.

So thats not a pure Cane Corso either, thats a mixed breed, thats VERY likely to fall within the measurements/id factors for an XL Bully type (yes, I know it looks a lot different to the dogs we're seeing in the papers but this dog is not fully grown, and the ID's will be done by measurements/proportions and will cover crossbreeds, so will fit a LOT of mixes/dogs...)

So I suspect the reason for rehoming is, the original owner knows this dog is likely to be a banned type shortly. Your son in NO way will meet the criteria to be an exempt dogs keeper, they need to live with the dog for a start.

This is absolutely doomed and is exactly the way some of the dogs who have killed people have changed hands and been shunted around clueless owners until disaster strikes. Poor bloody dog.

Sadless · 14/12/2023 07:11

Quick update hes still got the dog. He moved into his friends house but is viewing a flat today which he will be allowed to have a dog in the flat. I think he has realised that it's not as easy to keep a dog. The neighbours have been complaining about the dog barking alot so he knows he can't be out that long if shes in alone. He probably doesn't want to admit he shouldn't have got her. But he really likes the dog

EmpressaurusOfCats · 14/12/2023 07:24

I hope he manages to make it work somehow. But anyone who breeds kittens to sell on Facebook obviously has no ethics whatsoever & couldn’t care less about animal welfare. She shouldn’t be allowed to have pets.
