To ask what your KIDS actually like in a party bag?

So many people here suggest a book and a packet of seeds saying 'they go down a treat '. As if a 5yo is "thrilled" at receiving a seed bomb and a book from the works? 😂

We used to give stuff like a big bar of dairy milk. Or a bag of haribo. Or whatever hanging bags were on special offer. And would also chuck in something else. Things like whizzing balloons or gel pens or blind bags or whatever the latest craze was at the time and depending on age.

So what do your kids actually like in a party bag?

My son is having a pirate themed party for his 6th birthday. I've bought these little boxes and I'm just going to put chocolate coins, sweetie necklaces and haribo rings in them. They'll also get a balloon sword from the entertainer.

Stickers, snap band, a balloon, sweets, those squishy toys that attract loads of dirt, a mask - tat basically! They love it!

TheBeesKnee · 23/09/2023 23:43

When did this start? I'm 30 and I don't remember party bags or cake getting sent home, we ate it at the child's birthday party.

Nothing more to contribute as my baby is 5 months old !

Another 40 year old here and party bags was always a thing when I was a kid.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 24/09/2023 05:56

A mini can of Pepsi & some Haribo will go down a treat.

I would say I'm a fairly chilled out parent but I would be pretty pissed off if someone gave my kid caffeine.

newhere24 · 24/09/2023 06:42

Sweets (6 and 10 year old, but its been always like that).
Books if they can select from a pile, but not if preselected (both hate football etc).
Post it notes in unusual shape work well.
Plastic toys never make it out of the bag, cake goes directly in the bin (who wants stale cake with bits of tissue stuck to it).
Cupcakes go down well (not stale, no tissue stuck)

Oysterbabe · 24/09/2023 07:06

I'm surprised the cake gets binned, both of mine eat that the second we get home.

partypompoms · 24/09/2023 07:07

Cheap sunglasses from primark
Curly straws went down very well.
Hair clips and bobbles

7Worfs · 23/09/2023 22:39

I don’t do party bags anymore - sent everyone off with just a slice of expensive cake.
I really hope it catches on - fed up of tat and UPF crap I have to bin.

agreed! Crap and a totally unnecessary cost!

Strangestthings · 24/09/2023 07:27

I hate the plastic tat and just do sweetie bags/cones now!

Wannabedisneyprincess · 24/09/2023 07:36

My DD is 5 and she loves getting temporary tattoos in party bags, as a parent I also like these as they don’t hang around the house for ages also sweet cones as she’s quite fussy so will share, anything else I try and bin within a few days 😂

Sammi89 · 24/09/2023 07:38

Sweets!

but I once gave out grow your own grass heads and they were a MASSIVE hit

DeadButDelicious · 24/09/2023 07:46

My kid may be the only kid on planet earth who doesn't like haribo 😂😂 or regular birthday cake as she's morally affronted by jam and fondant icing.

We have DD's parties at the local soft play centre and built in to the eye watering price is a party bag for each child, they always go down well and include, a colouring/puzzle book, crayons, a little card game and an animal themed mask they also get a balloon and I threw in some bubbles and a fake tattoo.

Cake wouldn't go stale in an hour...

@DeadButDelicious your daughter sounds like me son, he doesn't like either of those either 😆 My eldest on the other hand is delighted if his brother is gifted haribo 😅

Is my child the only one who would absolutely love a packet of seeds, he loves planting things and watching them grow. He got some grass seeds a couple of years ago which he still lovingly tends to 😄

Bet those aghast parents wouldn't fucking bat an eyelid at a fruit shoot...

It’s got absolutely nothing to do with the ingredients list. We just object to the ridiculous hype around those drinks, that sort of hyper branding, influencer type nonsense isn’t something encouraged in these circles. It’s very low rent. There’s absolutely no chance any of the parents including me would want their child to buy in to that sort of thing.

Fridaysgirl17 · 24/09/2023 08:07

We are newish to parties as my son only started school last year but he loves the little stretchy characters,a mini haribo bag,a bag of crisps, there's been a Dino keychain, bouncy ball & he loves a pencil to add to his collection (he's 6) 😀

1ittlegreen · 24/09/2023 08:08

Good shout about the prime, I have 8 party bags to do for 10-11 year olds next week.

For a 5th birthday we bought bug boxes, like transparent carry boxes with a mini magnifying glass inside, in each box we put a little Venus fly trap plant. They went down a treat, I think the boxes were from flying tiger and the plants from b and q. I think each bag cost about £7....

Last year we did a gaming party and I bought temperature colour changing large cups with lids and straws from Amazon in different colours, everyone picked a colour at the beginning to use and took it home at the end with a cone of sweets.

MammaTo · 24/09/2023 08:13

My mind was blown by that thread too.

My little one isn’t of party bag age yet but a slice of cake and some sweet and something like a whoopee cushion or something like that was a party bag when I was little.

Id of been gutted with fuckin garden seeds tbh.

At my kids' school some of the kids are using an old prime bottle as their school water bottle 😂Reminded me of having to have a River Island plastic bag for your PE kit when I was at school. Kids will always have these random fads.

Boomchuck · 24/09/2023 08:20

Those legami erasable pens are a huge thing amongst my kids’ crowd of 8-10 year old girls. Also bath bombs, fake tattoos, lip gloss, and sweets.

Lentilbaby · 24/09/2023 08:24

Those really annoying plastic things that stick to the wall/ceiling and when they eventually fall off, they leave a stain that looks like a small leak Hmm Can't stand them but the kids are all over them!

Universitynewbie · 24/09/2023 08:28

I was under the impression that the people giving out books and seeds were doing it for environmental reasons, which is no bad thing but maybe there are better environmentally friendly gifts?
And before anyone comes and says a few party bags of tat won't make a difference, it does, it is a drip effect. If nobody cares then no difference is made, if everyone cares then a difference is made

So presumably your kids have no branded items at all?

You certainly don't have expensive Apple products and the kids never had anything from Smiggle or Apple or Barbie or Disney or similarly hyper branded, hyper marketed, not have they ever had any fad item like fidget spinners, loom bands, popper toys etc. As obviously you and your friends don't buy into that kind of thing...

I have a 6 year old and 7 year old. They like bubbles, fake tatoos, stickers, swop point crayons (I think that's what they are called) and sweets. Lucky bags go down a real treat. Points for sweets suitable for vegetarians.

Oh gosh yes! Mine are adults now and fake tattoos, stickers and bubbles were a massive hit all those years ago too. Who doesn’t love those tattoos! Stood the test of time.
