I was first aware of the phrase 'rock up' in 2006. I hate it.

Stephen Bear seems the type that might 'rock up'

Doesn't it just mean to attend some sort of event?

Chickenkeev · 22/09/2023 15:18

No odea who he is bit YANBU!

NoNeedToHurry · 22/09/2023 15:19

Oh nooo I use this phrase all the time 😫

"Oh I'll just rock up at some point and hope there's still tickets"

Now I think about it, it's a stupid phrase. What does it even mean?

I'll probably keep using it though

theduchessofspork · 22/09/2023 15:20

I quite like it…

stellarwo · 22/09/2023 15:20

Sorry didn't mean to offend anyone who uses it Grin

stellarwo · 22/09/2023 15:22

Good question @MsFrost - it gives me the cringe and you may as well just say 'turn up'

OP posts:
stellarwo · 22/09/2023 15:25

@PollyAmour I understood it to have the same meaning as 'turn up'

I always think of someone rocking up as acting like a rockstar, getting out of a shiny chauffer driven limo with sunglasses fully in place.

stellarwo · 22/09/2023 15:26

Yes exactly @PollyAmour which is why when I hear it Stephen Bear's the exact person that comes to mind !

I like it, I like rocking up and making an entrance! 🤣

Georgiepud · 22/09/2023 15:30

My brother is over from Australia and he uses the phrase all the time. Seemed odd at first, but I'm starting to copy!

stellarwo · 22/09/2023 15:32

Glad that so many people love rocking up! It would be so boring if we were all the same!!

A friend of mine used it about my ex who went for a drink in a pub she goes to. "Your bloody ex only went and rocked up in my pub really ruined my evening"

When I asked what had happened she said "nothing, he got a beer and chatted with his mates"

Somehow she thought I should be angry with him for going for a drink 😳 and avoiding the pub I usually went to!

I swear other people wanted our split to be acrimonious and not as amicable as it was!

Topseyt123 · 22/09/2023 15:39

I like it, though I don't use it regularly. 😃

Sorry, but you misspelled convicted sex abuser who's currently in prison I think.

I imagine the person rocking like a weeble (potentially showing my age).

Must be colloquial as where I live it means show up, with no glamourous overtones. Just a bit of a casual arrangement rather than a firm appointment.

stellarwo · 22/09/2023 15:50

@HollieHollie - I hate it when people seem to want you to be miserable!

OP posts:
stellarwo · 22/09/2023 15:51

Yes sorry @sadaboutmycat I was just trying to keep the description as neutral as possible

I think it implies an enthusiasm that "turn up" doesn't. I don't use it myself but it doesn't bother me.

stellarwo · 22/09/2023 15:52

@sadaboutmycat - yes your definition's what I thought it meant
