Who do I report a dangerous zebra crossing to?

I know you might think I'm just being a massive busy body, however where I live there is a zebra crossing on a corner that people speed over because they don't see it until the last minute. This morning 2 people sped over it when my son and I were waiting at it and 2 people again just now. It happens almost every day. My neighbours have older kids and have basically had to teach their children that the crossing doesn't exist and to assume cars won't stop. Is it even worth reporting? If so who do I report it to? Or am I just being a busy body and should I just leave it?

That seems like a very bad placement.

Council?

MrsTwartle · 22/09/2023 14:57

There’s a zebra crossing like that in my local town - a woman was run over there a few years ago!
I know many people have complained over the years, but it’s still there, and pedestrians have to be extra cautious crossing it.

CheersToMe · 22/09/2023 14:57

Contact the road safety officer at your local council.

IkaBaar · 22/09/2023 14:58

I reported a similar issue to our council on their online reporting form. They haven’t done anything about it though! You could also try your local councillor?

ORYX99 · 22/09/2023 14:59

It's awful, it just seems ridiculous to have a zebra crossing on a hill and corner. I'm tempted to set my phone to record over the next few weeks and send all the clips of people driving straight over it to the council. But that also seems ott and like I'm gonna burst a blood vessel over something daft.

Look on your local council's website for the page about roads/road safety - there will be a contact address. You could also contact your local councillor and ask that they lobby for a change.

TizerorFizz · 22/09/2023 15:06

@ORYX99 To the Highways Authority. Usually the county, or borough council.

What do you think of these? Motorists confused every day on busy streets near schools!

Ccontact your local councillor.

CallumDansTransitVan · 22/09/2023 15:08

The zoo. They will send a keeper out to deal with the zebra.

What makes you think people need to stop when you’re waiting at a zebra crossing?

Icandothisnow · 22/09/2023 15:11

You don’t live in an area with the initials SB do you?

From the Highway Code:
Drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross and MUST give way to pedestrians on a zebra crossing (see Rule H2).

Drivers 'should' stop.

PeterGriffinsPenisBeaker · 22/09/2023 15:13

County Council Highways team.

RB68 · 22/09/2023 15:16

Highways at the County Council are responsible for decisions on placement but they do get it wrong, there are specific regulations for their placement, signage and marking which you can look up

You can approach highways and whatever directorate are responsible for them directly, place a complaint with the chief exec of the council or whatever title they have and or use your local County Councilor to address the issue. I would whip up support of local businesses, organisations, youth clubs, schools and others if you want to have any sort of real impact though as a lone voice doesn't have much clout

Jericha · 22/09/2023 15:20

Is there a local MP or councillor with an online presence? There was a dangerous one in my town that people flagged online in the "town discussion group", it took a while but it's now completely gone.

ClareBlue · 22/09/2023 15:20

What's the Zebra actually doing that's dangerous. I find most are pretty safe when the need to cross the road. Maybe it's just Irish Zebras though.

Are you living in the UK? It's a legal requirement here - pedestrians have right of way at a zebra crossing.

ORYX99 · 22/09/2023 15:25

Thanks everyone. Though cringing at the zebra jokes.

Blackbyrd · 22/09/2023 15:27

Why do some people think this is funny? Anyway it's the unitary authority this needs to be reported to, however if they're anything like East Sussex they will do sod all about it over the years, resulting in someone being run over and killed on the crossing a few weeks ago. This crossing is also on a hill and a corner

ElFupacabra · 22/09/2023 15:27

Well, cars are not required to stop unless you are already on the crossing. If you are waiting they don’t have to.

Is this near Leeds by any chance ? I visited a friend and there was a terrifying crossing there. Near a canal. I'll have to think of the name but a car whizzed acroossed at at least 40

Only if they are on the crossing. The HC says “should” in relation to waiting pedestrians ie it’s common courtesy but they are under no obligation to stop for someone waiting.

SkippySkip · 22/09/2023 16:06

I usually shuffle forward on the pavement/ put one foot onto the crossing and traffic stops. Then I cross -I wouldn’t March straight across, I also wouldn’t just stand on the pavement so they aren’t sure you are crossing.

Irridescantshimmmer · 22/09/2023 16:11

Yes, it is definatly worth reporting as there is a danger of life.

Contact your local authority ( council ) and speak to your local councillor about it as they can put pressure on highways to put some traffic calming measures in place.

Hope this helps.
