Who do I report a dangerous zebra crossing to?

I know you might think I'm just being a massive busy body, however where I live there is a zebra crossing on a corner that people speed over because they don't see it until the last minute. This morning 2 people sped over it when my son and I were waiting at it and 2 people again just now. It happens almost every day. My neighbours have older kids and have basically had to teach their children that the crossing doesn't exist and to assume cars won't stop. Is it even worth reporting? If so who do I report it to? Or am I just being a busy body and should I just leave it?

There's one like this in IL town - off a round a round about down a hill slightly straight into a zebra crossing.

It's literally safe to cross further down the hill with no help than there - they can't see you before having to break whether you are on the crossing or not.

Complaints have had no effect as no accidents just near misses they are told- meanwhile junction outside our house has an huge number of accidents but no deaths so that goes no where either. I'd still say a complaint is worth it but not to expect any change.

yeah council - i reported dangerous traffic light crossing on my high road - basically the timing of the lights was all off and the cars had passed through the lights already and then the green man came on and you couldn't cross because the cars were still going! chaos

it was happening for a year and eventually i got in touch with local councilors, my MP, and got pointed in the right direction - it was TFL in charge of that area actually - and to be fair to them they got back to me in a day and fixed the timing on the lights that week and removed a yellow box a week later and it's all so much better now!!

SO deffo report

It's awful, it just seems ridiculous to have a zebra crossing on a hill and corner. I'm tempted to set my phone to record over the next few weeks and send all the clips of people driving straight over it to the council. But that also seems ott and like I'm gonna burst a blood vessel over something daft.

It's not daft, it could save someone's life or prevent serious injury.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 22/09/2023 16:44

you could complain to the council about it.

the really dangerous crossing in our town is in a supermarket car park. It’s so faded and the way the parking spaces are near it means you can’t see people until they are on the crossing. Everyone I know has had to break sharply at one time or another and my daughter was knocked off her bike on it a few months ago. We complained to the supermarket but have heard nothing in return, no apology, no concern or hoping that she is ok (she is) and the crossing is just as dangerous as ever. Disgusting.

Well, cars are not required to stop unless you are already on the crossing. If you are waiting they don’t have to.

I think that's the OP's point isn't it? That cars that aren't aware of the crossing travel so fast that they cannot stop in time so it's dangerous to step onto the crossing to exert your right of way? Or have I misunderstood?

What's the Zebra actually doing that's dangerous. I find most are pretty safe when the need to cross the road. Maybe it's just Irish Zebras though.

Your maybe mixing them up with stripy horses! Irish horses are always very considerate. The Zebra's over here can be very naughty. 😅

You don't report the crossing.
You report the drivers.

The Highway Code says they should stop and let you/ other pedestrians cross the road. Assuming that the paint markings and amber beacons are clearly visible, they should notice the crossing. And should be driving slowly and carefully enough to stop if necessary.

If they're not, they could be done for driving without due care and attention. A few sessions of police officers hanging out by the crossing, pulling drivers over and handing out fines would have a major impact pretty quickly.

If it didn't change their behaviour, the police would probably be on board with any campaigning to persuade the council to install a pelican/ toucan/ puffin crossing there instead (these are the names of different types of signal-controlled crossings where the drivers would have a red light, making it compulsory for them to stop while the pedestrians are still on the pavement).

LlynTegid · 22/09/2023 17:42

Tell the Council about the dangerous driving at this point. Frame it that way, don't call it a dangerous crossing.

Are you living in the UK? It's a legal requirement here - pedestrians have right of way at a zebra crossing.

Only if they are on the crossing. The HC says “should” in relation to waiting pedestrians ie it’s common courtesy but they are under no obligation to stop for someone waiting.

Should/should not contraventions can still contribute to an offence; they just aren't criminal offences in and of themselves.

So if you hit a pedestrian because they stepped out while you were zooming through the zebra crossing, your failure to obey that part of the Highway Code may be considered in determining whether you had committed an offence such as dangerous driving.

Clymene · 22/09/2023 17:46

Zebra and parallel crossings. As you approach a zebra crossing
• look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross
• you should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross
• you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing
• allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads
• do not wave, flash your lights or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching
• be patient, do not sound your horn or rev your engine as this can be intimidating
• be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing.

If they are driving too fast to stop for pedestrians waiting to cross, they're driving too fast to stop when pedestrians start crossing the road.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/09/2023 17:53

It might be the least worst attempt to reduce casualties - if it weren't there, the likelihood being that people would still try and cross and no cars would ever stop at all.

My money's on the people who speed over it being people who would carry on even if had a full lighted approach with 20 signs saying CROSSING COMING UP - SLOW DOWN FOR CROSSING - YOU'RE GETTING CLOSER TO THE CROSSING - SLOW DOWN - PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE CROSSING SOON - SLOW DOWN - NEARLY THERE - WATCH YOUR SPEED - DON'T FORGET TO STOP AT THE CROSSING - CAREFUL NOW - HAVE YOU SEEN THE CROSSING? - FOR GOD'S SAKE, NIGEL, SLOW DOWN THERE'S A FUCKING CROSSING HERE.

At least this way, some of them are going to stop.
