To give a 14 month old a vegan sausage roll?

I did an archive search and yes, it appears any Greggs product is the work of the devil. But they’ve gone plant based since then so…

14 month old DS has become much fussier and often very averse to being spoon fed. I’m trying to experiment with soft things he can feed himself and today tried him on a Greggs vegan sausage roll. It went down a treat (alongside some peas and peanut butter toast) But I’m aware they are super salty and I just feel a bit like I’ve crossed a line maybe? RIP the first six months of weaning when everything was homemade and wholesome.

AIBU? Would it be nutritionally better to let him eat fish fingers every day?

Not all day every day. But evert now and then when you’re out and about… why not. Keep it balanced though

I wouldn’t - vegan or not it’s an ultra processed food. And more salt and fat than the meat version.

‘Meat’ in a sausage roll… that’s a broad term 🤣

It’s fine as a treat- nothing in Greggs is healthy! It’s all fattening, sugary, pastry, crap! Pretty sure they’re sausages aren’t high quality either.

You can hardly ever get a vegan sausage roll around here, they’re always bought as soon as they come out of the oven. He won’t die. It’s fine.

Dolores87 · 23/09/2023 19:54

I would

WeightoftheWorld · 23/09/2023 20:13

My DC2 is almost 2 and has been eating them semi regularly since we started weaning at 6m! Can't remember how old DC1 was when they first had one but can't imagine it was older than 12 months really.

Blessedbethefruitz · 23/09/2023 20:22

We have an arfid 4yo who happily eats Gregg's meat sausage rolls, no other brand. So his baby sister (19 months) also has them once a week. She can't finish one obviously, not remotely close. She also blasts through a punnet of blueberries and strawberries in 2 days, and a bag of peas in a week (i dont limit fruit as she has chronic constipation, medicated). Her favourite food is brocoli. So I've no concerns! Everything in moderation and excellent oral hygiene are my goals 😅 (I'm also vegetarian)

Goldbar · 23/09/2023 20:42

I think YANBU so long as not a daily occurrence.

But maybe experiment a bit more with the menu at Greg's with your DC 😂? They do a nice cajun chicken rice thing with sweetcorn fritters that my little one likes on a day out.

It’s all about offering food variety at that age, so yes, it’s absolutely fine giving your kids a greggs vegan sausage roll!

Catza · 22/09/2023 14:12

Let me guess - first time mum? Your kid will be fine. I mean, you will have an army of "oh dear, why can't you just cook them poached salmon with a dash of caviar as a quick lunch" here in a minute. This is MN after all but I will insist, your kid will be just fine. It's good to get them to try a variety of foods. There is no such thing as bad and good food - only less and more nutrient dense. As long as they have a good balance and variety, a little vegan sausage ain't gonna kill them.
Salt is only problematic if someone has risk factors for cardiovascular disease. And, to be honest, I doubt fish fingers are any less processed (or peanut butter, for that matter)

Edited

There is definitely ‘bad food’ - food that’s bad for you. McDonald’s say, or chocolate, or doughnuts. Food that is calorie, sugar and fat laden with zero nutritional value.

i personally wouldn’t feed a toddler a vegan sausage roll, I’d get a proper one and give them a small bit. But occasionally, as there are better foods to eat, esp for a toddler.

Hayliebells · 24/09/2023 07:30

A Greggs sausage roll, or any UPF, is a problem if that's what they're eating every day. If UPFs make up a significant proportion of their diet, I'd worry. But every now and again, as part of a healthy, balanced diet, will cause no harm at all.

MercedesD · 24/09/2023 15:53

icelands does vegan sausage rolls (from “the no meat company”) and they come in with lower salt and fat than the Greggs ones. And I think they taste nicer. My son absolutely loved them when he was younger. Obviously it’s not an every day thing. But here and there why not…

Caththegreat · 24/09/2023 16:10

Not true. There are foods that are all bad.You need to read more.Look at Tim Spector website
Very dangerous view

stichguru · 24/09/2023 21:32

Is this real - the kid is one, not 6 months! Provided he isn't allergic to anything and you're feeding him an overall balanced diet with limited amounts of processed stuff, all is very good. Like if you'd said my kid is one and he'll only eat Greggs vegan sausage rolls and Happy Meals I'd be concerned, but the occasional vsr?! You're good!

BusyCaz · 24/09/2023 21:39

I may be one of the odd ones out here and I haven't read through.... But to be honest as long as baby is fed = happy baby = happy mum. Many little ones go through phases and by the time they are adults enjoy a variety of food. Give yourself a break xx

Brightandshining · 25/09/2023 10:39

Alright occasionally. Not regularly tho. Too much salt. And I guess you'd have to watch their salt intake across the rest of the day if you'd fed them that..
People get very precious about food on mumsnet. But tbh being given a sausage roll of any type as a treat once in a while is not going to harm your toddler. Just as long as you arent feeding them this every day and they are eating a good range of healthy foods.

No there isn't. Assigning value judgement to food is what leads to unhealthy relationships with food. McDonalds isn't "bad", it is high in calories and less nutritionally valuable as you yourself said (I would contest the fact that it has "zero nutritional value" - McDonald's burger has 13g of protein and 2,5g of fiber, for example). It doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed in moderation.
On that basis, I am not entirely convinced "a proper" sausage roll is any less calorie dense or any more nutritionally valuable than the vegan one. But I would be happy to feed either to my kid who otherwise enjoys a balanced diet. I would be less happy to feed it to my partner who is overweight and would benefit from getting the majority of his calories from nutrient-dense and minimally processed foods.
What I wouldn't be happy about is telling them such food is bad and making them feel guilty when occasionally indulging in it.

Willmafrockfit · 25/09/2023 11:23

what about a small sausage roll?

Leab23 · 25/09/2023 21:36

My DD has always loved a sausage roll from Greg's, she also loves tempura prawns with teriyaki mayo and can eat me out of house and home with fruit and veg! This one time it won't hurt, and it has not determined the eating habits for the rest of your lives. You'll be okay, and sometimes you just have to do what works.

Also, people will cry about processed foods but cheese is a processed food, yoghurt is a processed food... not everything can be farm to table, and not all processed foods are bad for you!

Bigbus · 25/09/2023 21:43

A bit off topic but could he be left-handed? My second DC was awful at feeding herself because she was copying her older sister and holding the spoon on her right hand. Switched to left and she was absolutely fine!

PS no harm in a Greggs Vegan Sausage Roll now and then!

Mummytotheboy · 25/09/2023 22:32

It won't hurt him. You can feed them organic vegetable puree from the fields ploughed with unicorn poo with salmon that's swam in the mermaid lagoons they will get to 22 months and will only eat jam sandwiches, "biccie" and baked beans! Yes I'm talking about my child

Interesting, me and DP are both lefties so maybe we’re holding back a natural righty.

Although switching from a spoon to a fork does seem to be helping - the stabbing action comes to him more naturally than a scoop.

Unless he's vegan, I'd give him a bit of a meat one. At least you (mostly) know what's in it!

What do you think is in a Gregg's meat sausage roll?

malificent7 · 26/09/2023 16:30

Why is a 14 month old vegan? Is he concerned about battery farming or the affect of dairy on the environment?

Dunno, you’d have to find one and ask them. My 14 month old is an omnivore.
