To give a 14 month old a vegan sausage roll?

I did an archive search and yes, it appears any Greggs product is the work of the devil. But they’ve gone plant based since then so…

14 month old DS has become much fussier and often very averse to being spoon fed. I’m trying to experiment with soft things he can feed himself and today tried him on a Greggs vegan sausage roll. It went down a treat (alongside some peas and peanut butter toast) But I’m aware they are super salty and I just feel a bit like I’ve crossed a line maybe? RIP the first six months of weaning when everything was homemade and wholesome.

AIBU? Would it be nutritionally better to let him eat fish fingers every day?

Occasionally is realistically fine but they are SO salty. Like… I like salt, and I find them really really salty.

EachPeachPearNectarine · 22/09/2023 14:35

Fine in moderation but why does he need soft foods? He can eat anything barring whole grapes/cherry tomatoes, hard lollies or popcorn unless he has particular allergies or similar.

Alwaystired2023 · 22/09/2023 14:37

My baby loves those, ate two whole ones last year ! We haven't been for a while and she's 3 now... but I would let her have another when the opportunity arises again

Unless he's vegan, I'd give him a bit of a meat one. At least you (mostly) know what's in it!

Yes, pig arsehole.

Alwaystired2023 · 22/09/2023 14:38

Sorry I meant to caveat with, she's always on the go eats lots of fruit and veg etc and it's no worse than what they might occasionally eat at a party etc!

Danikm151 · 22/09/2023 14:40

Nothing wrong with a greggs dummy now and then 😂

seriously though, it is fine. A balanced rounded diet is what matters.

Because he doesn’t agree he can eat anything. He is offered a wide variety but he struggles to chew a lot of things. I think people who boast about their DC gnawing on drumsticks either had lots of teeth early or weren’t fussy about food actually going down.

Yes fine, chopped so he can manage it better.

We don't have a Greggs near us but pretty sure DD2 would've wolfed a whole one at that age.

Noa23 · 22/09/2023 14:50

My 15 month old had a pretty large meat sausage roll in a cafe yesterday… It’s not his usual lunch but it’s also not his first sausage roll. I’m not in the slightest concerned plus it gave me time to drink a coffee!!

mathanxiety · 22/09/2023 15:11

Try to let him feed himself as much as possible - spoon feeding a 14 month old is the only bit of your post I'd be 'concerned' about.

SchadenfreudeIstMeinMittelname · 22/09/2023 15:22

Why not give him a proper sausage?

Cowlover89 · 22/09/2023 15:33

Tbf where I work the sausage rolls aren't UPF. I work in a proper bakery not Gregg's. So they'd be better and my son loves them. But one now and again from Greggs is fine.

Because I eat the vegan ones.

Genuine question, how adept were your DC with a spoon at 14 months? He’ll have a go, but there’s no way he’s getting a full serving of weetabix in by himself.

fine occasionally, but it is very processed junk food, as well as salty.

Good fish fingers or even a proper sausage will be better.

riotlady · 22/09/2023 15:44

DD loved a Greggs sausage roll as a toddler, they call it a geordie dummy for a reason😂

Ok, I found the shallower spoons worked best for DD. Bit of hit and miss with how much she got into her mouth but would shovel the rest in with the other hand! Practice makes perfect and they copy everything!

Crikeyalmighty · 22/09/2023 15:51

Personally I think they are horrible but each to their own- I certainly wouldn't not give it them because it was fast food , would more likely give him a proper sausage roll

crostini · 22/09/2023 15:57

People are so snobby about using spoons! They all learn eventually and they actually end up eating a lot more of the adult feeds them!

He'll only get good at chewing if you let him though! There's going to be a stage where it doesn't all go straight down but you need to let him work it out himself -he's not going to wake up one day and know how to do it without practise. Teeth aren't that relevant, all mine were eating all kinds of things before they were one and my DC who had no teeth before her first birthday was no different.

Moancup · 22/09/2023 20:16

He gets plenty of chewing practice but practice doesn’t mean a nutritionally beneficial amount of food is consumed. He loves chewing sourdough for instance but pieces of meat are clearly very hard work for him so he’ll only want a tiny amount. Anything with skin like raw peppers, grapes etc is tricky and I continue to offer these things regularly but I also want to make sure he has foods that he can get some calories in from.

Fishfingers would be much better nutritionally than sausage rolls of any kind.

🙄 my son has both. And like I said up thread. They are home made with proper meat. Not processed at all but again one from greggs is fine.

I've got zero interest in what your kid eats! I was just answering the question in the OP.

BertieBotts · 22/09/2023 20:29

Oh god it doesn't matter. Give him the vegan sausage roll. Give him the meat sausage roll! Either of them is fine. On balance, I'd probably go for the meat one if you're wanting to maximise calories. Vegan doesn't automatically mean healthier, it depends what it's made of.
