Current temperature of downstairs is 16 degrees. Dh adamant heating doesn’t need to go on as it’s only September. We have a one year old… I think it should be on?

DustyLee123 · 22/09/2023 07:57

No, dress child to the temperature.

SlippySarah · 22/09/2023 07:58

Definitely not. Put extra clothes on the child.

Whinge · 22/09/2023 08:00

16 degrees is fine. Just put another layer of clothes on the child.

Oumcs · 22/09/2023 08:00

What temperature would you put it on then?!?

OP posts:
Sirzy · 22/09/2023 08:00

Wouldn’t cross my mind to put it on at that.

DustyLee123 · 22/09/2023 08:01

Probably 18.

DustyLee123 · 22/09/2023 08:01

DustyLee123 · 22/09/2023 08:01

Probably 18.

But not at night.

PurpleMonkeys · 22/09/2023 08:02

16c is warm.. unless you're the sort that has their heating blasting at 25c.

But I'm an 80s kid, we were put outside in winter to sleep. Fresh air, did us good.. 🤣

Muchonachomiamigo · 22/09/2023 08:02

18 and I would consider it.

Put another layer of clothing on the baby. Seems like a no-brainer.

@Muchonachomiamigo as in at 18 you’d consider putting it on?

I would put the heating on. If it's cold it's cold, the month is irrelevant. 16 is not a comfortable room temperature for most people.

TinglingTangling · 22/09/2023 08:03

No I wouldn’t put it on at 16. Dress your child appropriately.

Lizzyinatizzy · 22/09/2023 08:08

I would be cold at 16.
It doesn’t matter what month it is if you are cold. Is the cost of the heating the issue rather than the principle of what month it is?

IAmAnIdiot123 · 22/09/2023 08:08

16 at night? No way would the heating be going on! Extra layer on the baby, we are still sleeping with the fan on!

Hercisback · 22/09/2023 08:09

Put clothes on the baby. 16 is fine.

smallshinybutton · 22/09/2023 08:09

What is your child wearing? It's tricky at this time of year

3WildOnes · 22/09/2023 08:12

Our heating is set to click on at night if it goes under 14. I think 16 at night is quite a pleasant temperature.

Oumcs · 22/09/2023 08:13

This is in the day. I wouldn’t put it on at night.

Iliketulips · 22/09/2023 08:13

We've never put the heating on until October. Also, often in middle of winter it can be 13c when we get up (until boiler brings it up to temperature).

I'd put your DC in an extra layer. If he/she is sat on settee watching tv, you could always put a blanket over them. If not, while moving, they'll be fine.

InYourHeadZombieeeaeaeaea · 22/09/2023 08:13

It's only on MN where I encountered people who think 16c in living areas is totes fine.

Sugarfree23 · 22/09/2023 08:17

I'd have the heating on 16 degrees is too cold for me to be comfortable just sitting around.

Although going by this thread they are probably the people who bang air con on at 16 degree while the rest of us freeze or go outside for a heat!

And conversely it's only on mumsnet that I've ever heard of anyone putting the heating on overnight!

Even in the depths of winter it genuinely wouldn't occur to me. That's what cosy PJs are for!!

WandaWonder · 22/09/2023 08:19

Why does a one year old need heating? and people complain of costs

BubziOwl · 22/09/2023 08:21

Just seen OP mean daytime. I'd probably put it at 16 but certainly wouldn't think it too cold - our heating is set to come on at 17 degrees starting in mid-October, and when it clicks on the first time DH and I often remark it feels warm so I would assume our house gets colder than in the preceding months and we get used to that temperature

nottaotter · 22/09/2023 08:23

It's like a competition as to who has the coldest house. 'My house is 9 degrees and I would never dream of putting heating on, I just wear 85 layers and have a heated throw'.

My heating went on yesterday as my house felt cold, I wear normal layers in the house like a long sleeve top and a jumper plus socks or slippers. If I get cold when im out it doesn't bother me but I hate being cold in my own house. Obviously if you don't have heating on because of money that's different, but 16 degrees is cold in a house for the majority of people.

I don't have kids and I would err on the side of caution as I know with babies its dangerous to have a room too hot, but I think that's too cold for a 1 year old and would have it at 18 degrees.
