The furthest north I’ve been in the UK is Glasgow - to the passport office - what a joyful experience that was 😂

I live on the south coast so anything above Southampton is north to me, but sort of York upwards is ‘up north’

soundsys · 21/09/2023 10:15

Furthest North I've been is Shetland.

The North officially starts when you can see the Hat Museum from the train 👩‍⚖️

North of England to me equals Yorkshire/Lancashire and upwards. Which if you're in Scotland is "down South" 😁

mambojambodothetango · 21/09/2023 10:18

Orkney. Wonderful place.

The North of the UK starts north of Leeds, imo, i.e. the Dales. The North of England starts at South Yorkshire. That's fact, not opinion. Anything south of there is Midlands.

MariaVT65 · 21/09/2023 10:20

I think we need to stop thinking just ‘north and south’ and start acknowledging the midlands. I’m from the midlands and identify as neither north nor south. The area actually has historical influences from both sides.

I also get teased frequently by northerners and southerners each claiming I’m the opposite.

Lochinver/Assynt

You can go a long way north in this country!

ApolloandDaphne · 21/09/2023 10:29

I've been to Stornaway. I'm not certain if I have been further north.

The North starts around Perth when you head on to the A9. I live in Scotland though. All of England is South.

WotNoUserName · 21/09/2023 10:29

The furthest north I've been is Bridlington. How exciting! Grin

North for me starts in Yorkshire.

Christmasusernamepending · 21/09/2023 10:45

I would say the north starts from Leeds.

TabbyM · 21/09/2023 10:51

I currently live in Aberdeen but have been as far north as Torridon, north to me is Shetland/Scandinavia. All of England is south, in the winter Newcastle has about an hour more daylight!

Dotjones · 21/09/2023 10:53

The furthest north I've been is Dunnet Head, the most northerly part of the UK mainland.

The north south divide is roughly the line between the Severn estuary and the Wash. So Birmingham is definitely "the north" your friend is right. Hunstanton is further north but is in "the south" because the line is not a horizontal east-west one.

OneTC · 21/09/2023 10:57

Inverness is the furthest north I've been in the uk.

I live in South London and shit starts getting weird north of the river tbh.

So you think Gloucester, Cheltenham, Hereford and Worcester are in the North?ConfusedGrin

notanothernana · 21/09/2023 11:14

Aviemore and for me the North starts north of the Midlands.

Hiddendoor · 21/09/2023 11:22

Wick

I think the north starts north of Dundee.

Libertass · 21/09/2023 11:24

Inverness.

The North starts at Sheffield. The South ends at Milton Keynes. And the bit in between is the Midlands.

foreverbasil · 21/09/2023 11:27

Shetland
I think the north is an imaginary line above Crewe, Mansfield, Lincoln...so a bit further north than the Mersey/Humber line a few people mentioned. Stoke definitely Midlands as is Nottingham. When I lived in Nottingham southerners seemed to think it was the far north

I mean south of Mersey/Humber 🤦‍♀️

garlictwist · 21/09/2023 11:33

John o groats. I'd say the north starts around Sheffield.

garlictwist · 21/09/2023 11:35

Ps I know Liverpool is considered the north but when you look on a map it really isn't! When you consider you can drive three or four hours north of there and still not have reached Scotland. I think it should be considered the midlands.

IncomingTraffic · 21/09/2023 11:36

I don’t think English people talking about the north are really thinking about the actual map. Newport Pagnell has been suggested as the start of ‘the north’. It’s 50 miles from London!

1dayatatime · 21/09/2023 11:50

Anywhere north of Plymouth or the Tamar but rather than the "North" I would simply see it as England.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 21/09/2023 12:16

Furthest north the Black Isle in Scotland.

The "North" starts at the Thames (Sarf London Lad here).

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 21/09/2023 12:28

I agree with those who say the North starts around Sheffield. The Midlands are definitely not North!

Furthest I have been is probably Dundee or Oban, not sure which one is further to the North. Or maybe a Hebridean island.

Scarlettpixie · 21/09/2023 12:31

John o Groats.

The North is Sheffield and up. Derby is most definitely in the midlands (East Midlands).

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/09/2023 12:37

Furthest north is Edinburgh.

I think the North begins at Sheffield
