GCSE re-mark….

Asparagus1 · 20/09/2023 16:40

My son’s school do early entry GCSEs in year 10. I’ve had an email from his RE teacher saying they think his paper would benefit from a re-mark. It’s £40 though and has to be paid by the 25th! He was 3 marks off a 6. Not sure what to do….has anyone had experience of this and did the mark change?

Dd had one of hers remarked. We knew nothing about it as the school just sent it off. School phoned a few months later to say it had been changed from 7 to 8. Think it was only 2 or 3 marks difference.

Willitstopraining · 20/09/2023 16:48

We did it because ds was 1 mark off an A. We got the remark back very quickly but there was no change in score at all. This was also for Religion GCSE.

Dacadactyl · 20/09/2023 16:50

I personally would for 40 quid.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 20/09/2023 16:50

School are paying for DDs remark in English Language. I wouldn’t pay for it unless it was going to make a difference, e.g. going from 3 to a 4 or if they wanted to study that subject at an advanced level and needed a higher grade.

HardcoreLadyType · 20/09/2023 16:51

My DD had a maths re-mark. She was very close, and had 2 papers re-marked. One of them came back unchanged. The other was changed, and she received the next grade up, and we got our money back for that paper (but not for the one that didn’t change).

As she has gone on to do a science degree, I expect this was a bigger deal for her university offers than for your DC, unless he wants to do RE A Level, and the school won’t let him, otherwise?

OneInEight · 20/09/2023 16:52

Is he bothered? Not sure a 6 as oppose to a 5 makes any difference to the next step.

Wishitsnows · 20/09/2023 16:52

For only £40 you should definitely get it remarked

Curioushorse · 20/09/2023 16:54

If the school have contacted you it's probably because it's likely. Many of the exam boards you can now see the papers. I've looked through all mine where the students were close, or the marks appeared odd. The only parents I've contacted are the ones where I've seen that it's worth it.

You get the money back if the marks change.

LlynTegid · 20/09/2023 16:57

I wouldn't unless intending to do RE at A level.

House4DS · 20/09/2023 17:06

@Asparagus1
Have they got the paper back? They will have needed DS permission to do this. It's quick - they download them. This is free.
Ask them which questions they think would go up - this will tell you if they actually looked at it. And which paper is more likely.
We've just sent DDs for remark - 1 mark off and more scope for marks on paper 2, so we're only getting that one done

To get in the local sixth form he will need four 6s and above so it would be good if it was changed to a 6

My sister is a teacher and does exam marking. She also does remarks and in her experience, it very rarely changes the overall grade. She said she remarked 40 papers and 3 changed marks in any way.

He got an 8 in his mock so I think a 5 was a shock…

Yes they said they have reviewed it. I think I will send the money in.

My son had a remark in RS - extra 16 marks went from a 6-8.

Wow that’s crazy! And a bit worrying because how many other people have lost 16 marks?!

DS3 was 4 marks off a 7 for Chemistry in August. We paid for 1 paper to be remarked. He got 5 extra marks and moved up to a 7.

Dd is having 2 remarked.. No mention of it costing me!

Yes, they did refund.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 20/09/2023 17:42

There’s your answer, if it makes a difference I’d pay.

edited to add the quote thing isn’t working for me but you said he needs 6s for the next step

Krystall · 20/09/2023 17:52

I work in an independent school in a support role. We have put through about 140 remark requests and we have had a grade change on about 40 of them so far.

Tiredalwaystired · 20/09/2023 17:53

Not read the whole thread so forgive me if this has been answered.

How important is the grade to him? Is it a subject he wants to pursue later on? Does it stop him moving ahead with a chosen career path? I’m saying that as a five is considered a strong pass, and no one even looks at GCSEs beyond a certain educational level.

The local sixth form requires four 6 or above grades for entry so it could make a difference depending on how well he does next year. I’m going to go ahead with it.

In the last few years it's changed its not a remark it's a review of marking and less likely to lead to changes.
