Obviously posting for traffic. 6 year old DS has head lice. Despite us all being treated 3 x we can't seem to get rid of the critters. I've been itching too and today combed these out.. are they eggs or lice? Urgh.

Anyone any advice please? At my wits end!

They are eggs

flyingant · 19/09/2023 14:02

They look like eggs with live lice inside. I recommend using a Nitty gritty comb every day for at least 2 weeks.

Weatherwax134 · 19/09/2023 14:03

The best advice I ever got was to get a bottle of cheap conditioner and a nitty gritty comb. I doused dry hair in the conditioner and used the comb in little sections. Then repeated the next day and the next (twice a day if possible). We got there in the end.

Malt vinegar is the best thing. My sister spent a fortune on all the recommended products and they didn't work. A lady overheard her in the pharmacy and suggested malt vinegar, it worked.

Lolapusht · 19/09/2023 14:04

I’ve never found a treatment that actually works. Spent a fortune on all sorts of hideous things. Only thing that I found works is spending time each night doing a thorough wet combing. We got reinveststions for weeks as others in class weren’t treating. If you comb each night you catch the little buggers that jump on that day 😡

No idea what’s in your pictures I’m afraid but looks more like eggs than lice 🤢

Lonelyandupset · 19/09/2023 14:05

Eggs that are possibly ready to hatch. Use hedrin. The one you do twice, two weeks apart. Completely coat the hair so it's almost dripping with solution. Can be expensive if you have anyone with long thick hair, but it's the only thing that works and is quick and easy.

Nits don't jump they spread by close contact

Winteriscoming12 · 19/09/2023 14:11

They are not full grown lice as they are bigger and have legs (6 yo DS had those all over his head last week, so I know). I had the ones in your picture and they dont appear to move like the adults do.

We have used Hedrin Once and so far, so good, but I need to check mine and DS's hair again tonight to be sure and maybe shampoo again this week.

Conkersinautumn · 19/09/2023 14:13

Nymphs, they can't move around.

Seriously? Ive even tried mouthwash! I cant comb them out, ive tried everything but kids just give me them back.

Lolapusht · 19/09/2023 14:19

It was a tongue-in-cheek comment. “…you can catch the little buggers that have transferred via close contact with someone who has an investstion…” didn’t quite scan as well 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mum198000 · 19/09/2023 14:20

When I worked in childcare. I straightened my hair if there was an outbreak in the setting. You could hear them pop.

Mum198000 · 19/09/2023 14:21

And to second that nitty gritty is the only comb that works!

Mummyratbag · 19/09/2023 14:23

Comb, comb, comb! As others have said ..conditioner and Nitty Gritty. Comb till you find no more, repeat every day until you have a day where you find none them check every few days until you are sure they have gone.

My Nan said that she used vinegar to get rid of head lice as a child

KandieKaine · 19/09/2023 14:24

For boys I recommend keeping the hair really short and just combing every night with a lice comb .

Only thing that's ever worked for me when I was younger

Enko · 19/09/2023 14:27

Op have a look at the lice program there is a schedule for when to comb and an explanation of why. Buy a load of cheap conditioner and a good comb (I also like the nitty gritty suggested above) and then follow this schedule and you will get rid of them.

Many give up way too soon and they miss the next hatching and get re infected.

Thank you all.. I feel so disgusting and like we're all infested!! On my way to boots for a nitty gritty comb 😞

Best thing I found, especially for thick hair, was the mouth wash Listerine.
You drench the hair in it, cover with a shower cap, comb out, leave 15 minutes and wash off as normal.
Repeat every 5 days. (3 days for a bad infestation). Never had to repeat more than twice.
It stopped it when none of the medications seemed to be working, was far nicer than any of the medications too plus far less work. Has the added advantage it's cheaper too!

Also recommend straighteners to fry the eggs, they killed everything, with treatment and comb first.

swimminglessonadvice · 19/09/2023 15:41
  1. hedrin once
  2. nitty gritty and conditioner
  3. headrin egg remover
  4. a torch and search!

3 of us had it in our house and that’s how I got rid, takes patience from child to sit in bath literally small section by section comb, rinse , comb rinse - then check check and check again

swimminglessonadvice · 19/09/2023 15:42

Oh yeah straightener is good the heat!

Ylvamoon · 19/09/2023 15:46

Yep, came here to say hair straighteners!
Fry the little buggers!

(I think in the future, crispy head lice could be a delicacy! 🤪)

goodenoughmum88 · 19/09/2023 15:58

Nitty Gritty everyday and we use Vosene 3 in 1 shampoo/conditioner/tea tree which so far has resulted in no head lice in our house for nearly 2 years (primary aged kids).

May make a sign…this house has been nit free for 2 years…..
