Russell Brand has been out of control for years

Russell Brand has been enabled to become the preposterous character he is by all those who facilitated his behaviour. That includes people who commissioned and watched his shows, idiots who bought his books and videos and the people who booked to see him. I have no idea if he raped anyone but I would put money on him being in prison within a couple of years. The fact is, his behaviour is and should be abhorrent to anyone with a shred of integrity.

As far as I can see, the allegations don’t go past the mid 2010’s?

I can’t see that anyone has (yet) come forward to report anything in the last 10ish (maybe slightly) less?

I may be wrong as there is an awful lot of media coverage and a lot of commentary which may or may not be factual.

Doesn’t diminish what he’s done, I do believe the main allegations. However I think (as far as I can see) that your statement of him being out of control for years is wrong.

He was out of control, no doubt about it and should be punished accordingly if found guilty.

I do find it interesting that there are no accusations in more recent years though? I wonder if some will come out

Cherrylily7 · 19/09/2023 11:49

Always found him grubby and nasty but the thing against andrew sachs appalled me and I have always detested him and jonathan ross ever since and never watch or listen to anything containing them
I have never found extreme vulgarity funny and it only confirms anything I ever thought that these horrible crimes are now coming to light

teddyandgypsy · 19/09/2023 11:51

Actually, I think you are right and that at this time he is very much IN control. For years his 'personality' was just designed to shock and attract attention but since about 2017 I think he saw the way the wind was blowing and has built up this cult following of people who (mind-numblingly) believe he is a freedom fighter. Of course, the truth is that the only freedom he is standing up for is his own - the right to spew forth invective and behave in whatever outrageous way he thinks will draw maximum attention. Interestingly, he doesn't afford the same 'freedom' privileges to those who disagree with or criticise him. When that happens the mask slips and he is downright nasty. So, yes, he probably is in control right now.

And if you think he's changed then read this. He is the same man, repackaged for a new group of vulnerable people.

Nobody made him rape anyone.

bemorebernard · 19/09/2023 10:06

Ah so this has now gone to Frankie Boyle whose advocating free speech and made a joke about toxic masculinity, and criticised Ricky gervais for doing trans jokes 🤷🏻‍♀️

How did we get here ? I lost the map .

Censorship is as bad I'd say. Where do you stop . Which books would you burn ?

This has really triggered me. So you think racist jokes are OK too? Of course you have to draw the line somewhere that's not censorship just common decency. It's funny how misogyny is always acceptable. We really are at the bottom of the pile in this regard.

SafferUpNorth · 19/09/2023 12:20

A pervert hiding in plain sight all these years. Personally I've always found his outragious 'humour' and image really creepy.

He’s quoting Jesus on tiktok now. Forgive them father for they know not what they do. Then talking about the Lord Buddha and transcending the light or something. Think he’s gone a bit Kanye West.

I saw that and commented about his Messiah complex. I loved him back in the day, always been a fan of Big Brother and thought he was hilarious on Big Mouth. Then I bought his autobiography and went off him rather a lot because of the way he wrote about his treatment of women. As a victim of SA myself I am particularly sensitive about men treating women badly. I tried to overlook it because for selfish reasons I found him very funny. So I was still a fan, I suppose. Especially as he seemed like a humanitarian and left wing supporter. I subscribed to his YouTube channel but I soon unsubscribed because he just seemed a bit cult leader and it didn’t resonate with me. Now I think about it he has some very psychopathic traits. Completely charming, highly intelligent and knows how to manipulate people into liking him with the huge vocabulary spoken in a working class accent. Drug issues in his past, a highly dysfunctional relationship with his father. I read this morning that YouTube have demonetised his channel so along with the suspension of his shows he must be very worried right now.

StressedToDeathhhh · 19/09/2023 12:58

What a load of crap. I loved him on Big Brothers Little Brother and read his (first?) book and liked him back then. After the Andrew Sachs thing I went right off him and he seems like a conspiracy nut for the last few years. But even people who liked him all the way through have not "enabled" him, how ridiculous. This is HIS fault.

Also really gross that you have "no idea" whether to believe his victims.

Zebedee999 · 19/09/2023 10:44

You must be very naieve to not see how he is with women and how he treats them? It was apparent decades ago that women were simply sex objects to him and he'd snog (and more) anyone that came his way. What made you join the queue to snog him? Doesn't it repulse you a man that has sex with 5 different women in a day and touches/snogs anyone that lets him?
As the OP said some people have simply emboldened his behaviour.

I see you’re one of those who blames women for the behaviour of a predatory misogynist. Tale as old as time.

waterlego · 19/09/2023 13:12

@StorminanDcup With regards to lack of allegations in recent years, one possibility is that his aggression and misogyny has been directed at his wife during this time. I really hope not, obviously.

cheezncrackers · 19/09/2023 13:20

I agree with you OP and that was my takeaway from the Dispatches documentary too - that for 25 years this odious individual had been enabled by absolutely everyone around him. If it was indeed an open secret that he's a sexual predator, why the fuck was he given so many jobs and opportunities? Why was he hired to front TV and radio shows, Hollywood films, why was he feted by politicians and fawned over by talk show hosts?

I've never watched anything he's been on, because I found him a deeply unattractive person - grubby looking, misogynistic, unfunny and just utterly full of himself. It's really clear now that significant numbers of people who worked with him were well aware exactly what he was like and yet they did nothing at all either to stop him or just to not hire him,to not enable his success or advance his career. Why? That's unforgiveable IMO.

longwayoff · 19/09/2023 13:20

I cannot stand his whiney voice and logorrhoea which many people believe is a sign of an overwhelming intellect. How baroque as RB might say.

Ohwhatadag · 19/09/2023 15:00

"logorrhoea"

Learnt a new word 😀

Standingchair1 · 19/09/2023 15:59

well said

PumpkiPie · 19/09/2023 16:18

He has always been repulsive and creepy. The allegations in the Dispatches programme are shocking but I wasn't shocked learning it was about him. In fact I had a... Well da! moment.

I'm no prude, I enjoy comedy, even risqué comedy. But he was just another level and it appears he was able to get away with his behaviour because his fans were blinded by it.

Right from when he was on Big Brothers big mouth he came across a wrongen, then the Andrew Sachs scandle. Jonathan Ross at least stayed to face the music while RB went to America and ignored the consequences of his actions.

Disgusting man and always has been.

EerieSilence · 19/09/2023 16:40

There are few comedians who are very openly misogynistic and awful, the likes of Brand and Carr (he's a fucking wanker, seriously, I understand interacting with audience and exchanging some funny insults but calling woman ugly just because she called him rude is a bit different. I prefer dry to black humour without Holocaust and ugly women jokes.).
The thing is, if you listen to them properly, you know that they really mean what they say and their attempts at downplaying it as a joke or black humour are simply gaslighting. I still wouldn't blame his viewers and call them idiots.

user1471538283 · 19/09/2023 17:14

He always have me the creeps. Another one who would "joke" and really thought he was charismatic and edgy.

He was neither. He was spoilt and creepy.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 19/09/2023 19:24

I never liked him in his heyday either but all my friends did which was awkward and at times tedious. I used to enjoy the Guardian back in the 80s/90s/00s (not anymore) and of course they were always promoting him. One friend was thrilled that he tried to hit on her once outside a London venue at night (years ago). I understood her excitement and hero worship but her description sounded sleazy 🤷‍♀️ She was also the complete opposite of the confident, willowy media type one would assume he was attracted to which made it all the more incongruous (no shade to my friend, she's nice and unassuming).

More recently (and I haven't seen this mentioned) was his episode of Stand Up to Cancer Bake Off (2019). He was entertaining enough but I thought his final bake was pretty inappropriate and really offensive to his wife/women in general and possibly embarrassing to his daughter in the future.

The brief was 'your finest performance' and he decided to fashion his wife's vagina (well, labia) out of cookies (complete with pink/red/purple icing), sperm and an egg and a 3D cookie birthing pool and figurines at the centre. It just felt really humiliating and misogynistic to his wife, even if she'd okayed it. It was completely full of 'fnar fnar' schoolboy humour which the producers, hosts and contestants all supported. It was also meant to be HIS finest performance but I can't quite remember what his role was other than impregnating his wife and he admitted it was her finest performance (giving birth) and that he had a secondary role. His figurine even looked weirdly messianic!

He sounded quite insincere in complimenting his wife and he didn't sound remotely like a proud husband/father. More an excuse to make biscuits resembling his wife's reproductive parts and talk about them extensively (and imply they were gross) on national tv. It wasn't like someone was making an embarrassing approximation of his cock out of shortbread although I expect he'd have quite liked that 🙄

LlynTegid · 19/09/2023 19:27

The Andrew Sachs call should have been the time no-one watched or listened to him after that ever again.

I'm sure Channel 4 loved it. Not so much now. Utter puerile filth

Reminds me of that scene from Friends, where Phoebe and Monica’s ex-roommate gushes, ‘I kissed Billy Joel!’ Phoebe’s shrugged response - ‘who hasn’t?!’

teddyandgypsy · 19/09/2023 19:39

He shouldn't have an audience for such behaviour. Not because it's banned but because people have too much respect for themselves to find him amusing.

I agree to some extent. When he was “joking” about raping women, he should have been stopped there and then, it’s NOT acceptable to joke about making someone choke with your penis.
Frankie Boyle jokes about raping women, the evidence is on his DVDs which have sold in their thousands. He should be next for investigated.

Edited

Frankie Boyle is horrendous
