Badly dressed and over weight English people

My sister, who has lived in Australia for years, was in England recently for an extended holiday. She was shocked at how many overweight, badly dressed and heavily tattooed people there were wandering around. I never really thought about it before, but looking at it afresh through her eyes I could see where she was coming from. I don't remember people looking like that when we were growing up, but we seem to have evolved into a race of very heavy and unhealthy looking people with absolutely no dress sense. Am I just misremembering my youth when I recall most people being a healthy weight and people generally dressing ok?

Is she slim and well dressed with no tattoos?

WickedSerious · 18/09/2023 16:47

This will go well.

The stats for the U.K. getting more obese are raising. It’s due to the processed food we all eat and lack of knowledge of basic nutrition and knowing how many calories are in the food we eat. In ten years time the nhs is going to be even more in its knees with weight related problems.

Ponoka7 · 18/09/2023 16:47

Were is she from in Australia that people don't have tattoos, dress casually and are weighty?

ghostyslovesheets · 18/09/2023 16:47

I bet you are teeny tiny, tattoo free and dressed head to toe in Boden op

SquashPenguin · 18/09/2023 16:48

Your sister sounds a bit of a dick to be honest. Plenty of fat, tattooed people in Australia as well.

LemonQuiche · 18/09/2023 16:48

I once went to Australia and was amazed at the number of people wandering around with corks hanging from their hats and drinking Castlemaine XXXX.

AliceOlive · 18/09/2023 16:48

Styles have definitely changed in US, too.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 18/09/2023 16:48

Not sure what tattoos have to do with anything but yes, people have definitely got bigger.

Why?

I do agree there are more overweight people than there used to be. 'Badly dressed' is subjective though. What do you even mean by that? Fashions change all the time and we've recently come out of lockdown/ Covid where people of course dressed more casually.

A comparison to Australia is also never really going to hold up because there are so much more opportunities there for a healthy outdoor lifestyle. I think people will generally have better health in a place like that, partly because of the climate and lifestyle.

BCCoach · 18/09/2023 16:49

Australia has a higher rate of obesity and overweight than the UK. And their dress sense is shit too. Or are you confusing Australia and Austria?

ghostyslovesheets · 18/09/2023 16:49

The 'Australian's have healthy outdoor lifestyles' thing is a complete myth though. They have substantially higher rates of obesity than the UK does.

Tauranga · 18/09/2023 16:51

According to Google, Australia is 13th most obese country and the UK is 18th. So your sister is being a twit!

I was astounded by the number of severely overweight people last time I went to Australia!

I went on holiday this summer to a resort in the med and was feeling very bad about myself as I have gained weight. We were not in an area with loads of British tourists and I lost sleep worrying about being the chubby, English blob on the beach. There were people of all shapes and sizes of varying nationalities. The Brits certainly didn’t stand out.

Obesity is a global issue (in developed countries).
