Badly dressed and over weight English people

My sister, who has lived in Australia for years, was in England recently for an extended holiday. She was shocked at how many overweight, badly dressed and heavily tattooed people there were wandering around. I never really thought about it before, but looking at it afresh through her eyes I could see where she was coming from. I don't remember people looking like that when we were growing up, but we seem to have evolved into a race of very heavy and unhealthy looking people with absolutely no dress sense. Am I just misremembering my youth when I recall most people being a healthy weight and people generally dressing ok?

I doubt she saw that in Clevedon. It’s a very posh place.

Down around the seafront and the hotel beside the marina it was packed with people during the recent heatwave. That was where my sister really noticed it. I haven't been to Australia so can't comment on people there. But I genuinely think that English people are much heavier than we used to be. And definitely there weren't as many heavily tatooed people around until recently.

Fairly sure I could find overweight badly dressed Australians in 2 minutes if googling

GrimGrinningGhosts · 18/09/2023 17:09

And Lo! A wild goady fucker appeared.

bellac11 · 18/09/2023 17:09

Shes right but from what Ive seen and understand about Australian society (no Ive never been), they look very similar, very overweight as a nation, its a health concern there as well

I am one of these pasty, red, badly dressed lumps. I wish I could be otherwise but Im not

I really feel it when we go abroad.

bombastix · 18/09/2023 17:12

Yes even if not a goady fucker the number of people who are fat wearing shit sports gear is high.

No idea about Australia but certainly fair to say that we are fatter and crappily dressed. And used to be thinner and more stylish as a nation. It looks poor because it's a look that comes from poverty

I've visited numerous European cities and the attractiveness, style and apparent healthiness of the people you see puts the British to shame. It really is embarrassing sometimes. The stats on obesity, regular physical activity, alcohol consumption, etc all reflect badly on the UK too.

when walking around Le Havre, Normandy last year I noticed people sitting drinking wine at 10.30 in the morning.

TheDuck2018 · 18/09/2023 17:15

Feel happier for this, do you, op? Has your slim, well-dressed sister made you feel a bit crap so you've come on here to make yourself feel better???

x2boys · 18/09/2023 17:17

Ah the weekly isnt the UK dreadful compared to.everywhere else in the world at jusy about everything thread

ghostyslovesheets · 18/09/2023 17:18

I often see very slim, tanned Dutch people on holiday - they all chain smoke - but I guess that's better than being fat!

Full disclosure I have lots of tattoos and live in jeans and DM's - I probably look simply ghastly

@MaryMcCarthy are you comparing like for like in your observations though? Comparing chic young things in European cities with comparable areas of London or other wealthy UK cities?

I agree with this and chic dressing that is pretty conservative (boring visually) has never been a British style and yet British fashion is a big exporter.

Beezknees · 18/09/2023 17:19

I'm a fat tattooed woman, possibly with bad dress sense although that's personal preference. Am I offending you somehow while I'm just trying to get on with my life?

Flamedmoth · 18/09/2023 17:20

On average Australian men and women weigh more than British

I thought this rang true. A lot of people dress like they just got out of prison. Hoodie, joggers, socks and pool slides. I know people used to dress better but jeez.

Tonight1 · 18/09/2023 17:21

Do people really scrutinise it to this extent? It's not my job to 'police' strangers. I vaguely clock their appearance but that's it, it's more their behaviour that I'd notice.

bellac11 · 18/09/2023 17:21

Why are people so defensive about this? Some of these answers seem to suggest people are uncomfortable about the facts.

We (me included) are overweight as a nation, its a health crisis, our clothes shops generally sell rubbish, so we wear bad clothing, it looks awful.

Why are you so bothered about how other people choose to dress? It doesn't affect you in any way.

Its not born out by facts though. Australia has a higher obesity rate, and higher average weight than the UK.

Not to mention they also have a drink problem as a country.

TorqueWrench · 18/09/2023 17:33

Are Australians renowned for their elegant and chic fashion sense? 🤔

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 18/09/2023 17:34

Based solely on MAFS and a few SM posts, Australia seems to be about 30 years behind the rest of the world in terms of fashion, so I expect OPs sister will start seeing "badly dressed" and heavily tattooed people where she is around 2050.

Bonjovispjs · 18/09/2023 17:36

Would love to see a pic of OP and her sister 😜

The stats for the U.K. getting more obese are raising. It’s due to the processed food we all eat and lack of knowledge of basic nutrition and knowing how many calories are in the food we eat. In ten years time the nhs is going to be even more in its knees with weight related problems.

You've missed out being able to afford (money and time wise) to buy and cook healthily.

I weight just under nine stone and wear a size 8 clothes. I still find the op offensive, classist bullshit, and I’m certain she posted it to be a massive shit stirring nob.
