September makes me feel a certain way

I sort of like it…I love autumn, but also it feels strange, quieter & a bit empty.. I feel a bit down this week and very nostalgic

Does anyone else get weird September vibes?

It's been so hot this September that I haven't really felt like that. Still feel like autumn is going to race by because of the heatwaves we had this month. That's what makes me sad as autumn is my favourite time of year.

Yes the same for me. I was so relieved that we'd got away with it (heatwaves) in July and August and then we got hit by one in September with that appalling humidity. So I'm still a bit on edge. I want autumn weather which it actually is today (SE)

GoodOldEmmaNess · 18/09/2023 22:45

I certainly get the September vibes. Season of mists, mellow fruitfulness and the new school year. I have to work very hard to stop myself buying a nice new pencil case.

chillidoritto · 18/09/2023 23:07

This hasn’t triggered me in the way that normal Autumn threads have …

But where in God’s name are you getting crisp from?!?!?!!

notfeeblebutPhoebe · 18/09/2023 23:17

Now there are no back to school situations for us September seems melancholy, like some barely heard music that is 'not quite good enough' to be Mozart.
Summer is ending, it is dribbling away. We still get teased by some sunshine, but it lacks the whiteness of summer light.
After we change the clocks and it's dark at tea time then we can brace ourselves and work at Autumn and Winter. The changing clothes, different foods, different colours around us. It seems right to retreat or withdraw a little.

Johnisafckface · 19/09/2023 00:42

I definitely get melancholy in September/fall, altho it’s my fav time of the year. I think for me it’s because college was my best time of my life and it reminds me of starting fresh for the new school year. It’s bittersweet to think I won’t ever experience that time of my life again.

MellowYellow2023 · 19/09/2023 04:38

YANBU, op. I like the fresh start school year (teacher and parent) but feel very sad that the summer is over at the same time.

First week of term last week was a big shock to the system, even though I like my job. I like how the young people I teach all have their new pencil cases and pens and start off trying so hard.

To look forward, we have autumn, crunchy leaves and walks, a warm fire in a pub, Bonfire night to look forward to. (I don’t like Halloween so much apart from carving a pumpkin.🎃 Some of the children in my neighbourhood were quite grabby last year and annoyed me. 🍬😆 Nothing’s ever perfect and I think I need to work on being ok with that!!

Piglet89 · 19/09/2023 04:47

I TOTALLY GET WHAT YOU MEAN OP!

lollipoprainbow · 19/09/2023 04:51

Always feels bittersweet to me.

Lol I agree- I love crisp but it's very soggy atm!

This thread is brilliant- helped me recognise we're all a bit September bluesy in our house. Maybe more so this year as we've all got lots of change going on.
My daughter started secondary school after lots of hard work, and as much as she's loving it and has found lots of lovely new friends I think the stress and uunknowness is taking it's toll. After a fun Saturday with lots of chilling out and tv time she asked do you ever feel sad for no reason. I said we all do sometimes, it's normal and good to acknowledge it because it helps you enjoy happiness even more. No idea how that landed but it was bedtime and I think everyone feels like that then!
Other stuff going on too in the family but now I think September is a big factor too. These posts and tips have comforted me that we're also affected by the natural tide of the seasons and social change around us.
I don't mind September but it has been stressful this year.
I love the tips to start planning Christmas as I'm normally late and panicky with that (see name...).
I actually love the first couple of weeks of January when it's all over and you can tidy up and relax again and the days start getting noticeably longer. To me that's an optimistic time, planning the year ahead. Then there's a stagnant period late Jan/Feb then March/April when the flowers appear and it gets warmer is my favourite

Whatafustercluck · 19/09/2023 07:06

September gives me mixed emotions. Visually, it's stunning. The colour changes of the leaves on the trees, the most hanging over the ploughed fields feels sublime in a way that other months do not. But it's always tinged with melancholy: regret for the things you wanted to do in Spring and Summer yet didn't get around to; I miss the children when they're back at school and despite working and being busy, I get a premonition of what an empty nest will feel like one day. And Spring (my favourite time of year) feels so dreadfully far away, particularly in the UK where our fine weather window is so short. It always feels like a time of goodbyes, but is also a transitional month that paves the way for the excitement of the following months. Halloween, Bonfire Night, a November full of birthday excitement (for our family) and finally, Christmas.

Bubop · 19/09/2023 07:09

I love September! It makes me feel sentimental for some reason… nostalgic for the past and excited for the future at the same time.

I wonder if it’s a hangover from starting a new year at school?

Tumbleweed101 · 19/09/2023 07:24

Yes, feel the same. I always get restless and a longing for something at end of August but this changes in Sept and I feel more ready for changes and new things. I like the beginning of the month as it feels like a calmer bit of summer and as we reach the end you can feel it changing into Autumn and the nights are noticeably longer.

I also like October, pumpkin patches and the build up to the end of harvest. I think of November, after bonfire night, as the real move towards the colder months as the temperature drops quite sharply after that week.

I think the September feeling is definitely a left over from childhood though.

ElleDeeCB · 19/09/2023 07:24

I get a sad nostalgia feeling on Bonfire Night, thinking back on Bonfire Nights from the past. This one will be tough as it will be the last one we go to when my child is at Primary School, as we go to the fireworks display at the school.

Yes this sentimental, nostalgic. My mum always felt the same in September.

rasellagirl · 19/09/2023 07:30

So what do we do to cheer ourselves up?!

Helloits2023 · 19/09/2023 07:34

I’ve always struggled with September in a very similar way and eventually realised I have some form of seasonal affective disorder. Now I always try to get out for a walk in the morning if the weather’s good or stare into my SAD lamp for a while in bed if not. It really helps.

Oh I have also just remembered a friend of mine, still single at the time, who signed up for car maintenance classes because she thought it would be a good way to meet men. Except when she got there it was overwhelmingly other women who had signed up for the same reason

Excitingnewusername · 25/09/2023 20:35

I completely understand the sense of cosy melancholy. Childhood memories seem to come back more regularly and forcefully at this time of year.

I like the sense of putting the year to bed, and closing the busyness of the world out. But I dread the walks home from work in pitch darkness and rain.

I love looking forward to all the autumn events my town puts on, though bonfire night seems to have become a thing of the past (the town's fireworks event has been cancelled so many times of late, and this year they aren't even trying) and that's making me very nostalgic for 80s primary school bonfires/fireworks followed by warm pyjamas at home. Which is very happy-sad.

TinaTeaspoons · 25/09/2023 22:05

I'm missing the crisp autumn days. Was bloody boiling today in London. Has felt like summer so far all through this month and I am bored of it.

squareyedannie · 25/09/2023 22:20

My depression gets worse when Sep rolls around. I long for March.

ListenLinda · 25/09/2023 22:21

Yes I get this too, & never understood why.

I also feel like I can almost smell the seasons changing. I do love Autumn.
