September makes me feel a certain way

I sort of like it…I love autumn, but also it feels strange, quieter & a bit empty.. I feel a bit down this week and very nostalgic

Does anyone else get weird September vibes?

Always! I think I subconsciously take in the change in the daylight, the smell of decay starting, remember the back to school feelings & times of less responsibility in life. There seem to have been a lot of deaths in my family in September too, over many years, and if I ever have a slightly woo experience I'll realise ahh it's September, the ghosts are back.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 17/09/2023 22:30

I love this thread. Definitely recognise the September feeling. Have never managed to articulate it quite as well as some of you have done. I have a similar but less melancholic in Spring too as the clocks go forward and the nights get lighter. Funnily enough I don't get in it January when it's actual New Year

RichardsGear · 17/09/2023 22:31

Crisp Autumn air my arse - it's usually damp and dank and makes my hair go frizzy. Maybe if I lived in Vermont or somewhere I might feel different!

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 17/09/2023 22:31

@TheWelshposter i could have written your post.

From April onwards this is so much promise .... looking forward to the garden flowering, holidays, days out ....

My DC are teens , not many summer holidays left, i dont like the dark and the rain , and just feel so sad and lost at the moment .

dudsville · 17/09/2023 22:37

September will always be linked to childhood and the end of summer and return to school for new, even though I'm now old. I haven't had it in mind particularly this year, but I've been away from work for a couple of months and was packing my bag earlier and was instantly transported back in time.

I also think September is challenging to live for the neither here nor there blah weather. It's warm ish, clamy, humid blahness. I love true summer and true winter. Loathe the humid in between times!

I know what you mean op. I adore Autumn but September also has a vein of nostalgic melancholy running through it. I find myself thinking about my grandparents and sleeping under candlewick in their back bedroom. It's something to do with the drawing in of the evenings, the crispness of change. I find myself yearning for something I can't pinpoint.

You have put this really beautifully and accurately.

FlyingPandas · 17/09/2023 22:42

I absolutely get this. On the one hand I adore September and the onset of autumn but on the other the description of 'nostalgic melancholy' sums it up perfectly.

I think it's a combination of seasonal change, the end of summer, the return to school (I work in a school and have primary, secondary and uni aged DC so September is all about the new academic year, settling younger DC back to school, saying goodbye to eldest as he goes back to his uni city) and the subsequent onset of autumn and winter.

I love it and find it sad-making all at the same time.

Wolvesart · 17/09/2023 22:46

I love autumn and the run up to Christmas, but …. school, sixth form pressure changes that. I do love the clothes though. Still wearing ankle skimmers but with nice footwear and cardigans and scarves and long cardigans and shackets.

Onthisproject · 17/09/2023 22:52

Totally this

Jackydaytona · 17/09/2023 22:55

Autumn: season of mists and mellow fruitfulness 🍁😌

UpperLowerMiddleClass · 17/09/2023 22:59

It’s a much better New Year time than January. Mid Winter is appalling and no time to start anything.

I agree - I definitely think of September as more ‘new year like’ than January. Partly as I work in a university and so it’s the start of the academic year. Plus I’m Jewish and Jewish new year (Rosh Hashanah) is in September.

HideousKinky · 17/09/2023 23:01

Yes - it has always had the feeling of new beginnings/possibilities for me. My birthday is in September then of course there's the new school year thing which never seems to go away, even though my children are all grown up. I love that first gust of autumnal air, especially after a very hot summer (not this year!)

Rainallnight · 17/09/2023 23:02

This is so interesting! How different we all are 🙂

I love September. I’m not a big fan of summer, so I think ‘thank Christ that’s over’, whack on my opaque tights, and enjoy getting into the routine.

I also have a new year sense about it, and always have done, even before I had DC. I feel much more optimistic about than I do about actual new years in January, which I hate!

Takeabreather23 · 17/09/2023 23:03

I get it too . Im not feeling down though .
more relaxed no pressure to fill the long summer days doing stuff .
I love the air in autumn cold fresh crisp days
The falling of leaves .

FrancisSeaton · 17/09/2023 23:05

Yes! I can't explain if either but if feels eerie

iamwhatiam23 · 17/09/2023 23:06

I thought i was the only one who got a strange feeling in the Autumn! I love it right up until Christmas, but jan, feb and march are the most depressing months of the year!

NowWhattt · 17/09/2023 23:06

I’m the same with November as well. My goodness I hate it.

Bristolnewcomer · 17/09/2023 23:15

It is a strange time. It’s very nostalgic seeing all the new school kids in their big blazers and the new freshers with their new toasters and ikea bags, we’ve all been through those kind of transition and while I’m glad I never have to do them again it shows the passing of time.

Totally agree that new year is at the wrong time, personally I think it should be in the spring, maybe 1st April.

Tumbly · 17/09/2023 23:34

I get this too! Moments of sadness that nights are drawing in, I feel the year is changing, drawing towards the end... frustration at how I'm too warm one minute and chilly the next... enjoyment when the cold air comes in and I can wear leggings and hoodies again! Overall, an awkward month that makes me uneasy, despite enjoying parts of it (more towards its end).

I've accepted and thrown myself into the winter by October though. It's the in-between, feeling of change that I don't like of September. Odd, because I feel happiest in March, another month or change, but perhaps that comes from the relief of lighter days and hope of Spring!

Tumbly · 17/09/2023 23:36

Tip: I've found planning any holidays/theatre trips/annual leave/whatever you enjoy mostly in the winter months helps combat the feeling. I still have a lot to look forward to as I've taken most of my time off between now and Dec. Not possible for everyone though.

GodspeedJune · 17/09/2023 23:44

Glad I’m not the only one. I was heavily pregnant last year and remembering feeling it was a blurgh time of year to be bringing a baby home. This year I feel all unsettled and pessimistic. Hope it passes soon.

This is the most perfectly written post. Thank you.

Storynanny1 · 18/09/2023 00:52

I love September, the colours, proper clothes not bits of creased up cotton, the smell in the air in the evening. I’ve always thought it was because my birthday in September!
Is always the start of a new year for me, went straight from school into infant teaching, so from the age of 5 to retiring at 60, my year begins in September. moves swiftly on to Harvest, Guy Fawkes, advent, Christmas, new year, signs of new life in Spring, Easter, maypole etc.
Then back to September before you know it.

975zyx · 18/09/2023 01:06

September makes me feel sad. I hate September to December, it only improves when we get to New Year and there’s spring on the horizon.

BeautifulWar · 18/09/2023 09:34

I totally get this, OP and it's interesting to see so many others do too.

Nostalgic melancholy is a wonderful way to describe this feeling; wistful was the word that sprang to mind for me but I think that sums it up better.

I love autumn. I love the back-to-school feeling of freshness, a new chapter, the environmental changes, looking forward to Christmas (and Halloween for my DD's sake), but it's tinged with sadness that summer is over, and that another year is at a close.

Sure enough, summer will come again, but we'll all be a little bit older, a little different, shaped by whatever experiences lie in between now and then.

I always this of this old song at this time of year:
