It depends on the size of the school. Assuming he's in England or Wales (I can't speak for Scotland or N Ireland), to be on 40k the school would have to be TINY.

Tell me the type and size of school and I can give you an estimate of the salary range he was placed on.

hmmwhatypudaay · 17/09/2023 11:57

@VickyEadieofThigh hes at a secondary school in the midlands. I don’t know how I would find out the size? It’s 11-18 years.

Google the schools ofsted, number on roll will be there. Large secondary school you're probably looking at £70-90000
Top end of teaching pay scale is £46000

useitorlose · 17/09/2023 12:07

As a deputy head in Inner London 6 years ago I was on 60k.

VariationsonaTheme · 17/09/2023 12:10

Head teacher of a secondary school is not on £40k. Leadership scale starts at £43k and that’s usually for deputies/AHT in small primaries.

MasterBeth · 17/09/2023 12:16

He's lying to you.

Ghostwritersinc · 17/09/2023 12:21

It is not typical, but I have heard of heads who have a reputation of taking over ‘failing’ schools and turning them around quickly, to be on a salary of 400k a year. Yes 400k not 40k! This was in Cardiff, and salary absolutely underserved in my opinion!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/09/2023 12:22

He's lying.

Hibernatalie · 17/09/2023 12:24

I was on more than that an an English teacher. Secondary school headteacher on £80-100k in London.

Dacadactyl · 17/09/2023 12:25

My SIL was on just shy of 70k 10 years ago as a deputy head of a secondary.

I'd expect a head of a secondary these days to start on at least 85k with potential for 100k plus earnings.

RedLollyYellowLorry · 17/09/2023 12:28

Pay has just gone up

Secondary of less than 100 pupils likely to be a group 5- so about £80-100K- much more likely to be top end

You can work it out- the teachers pay and conditions tell you how to calculate the group size of a school. GIAS tells you how many pupils it has. Any union website shows you the 2023 pay scale for each group.

They are on way more than that.

Primary are are £75-85 without any London weighting

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 17/09/2023 12:30

I know a head of primary who is definitely nicely in excess of £100k. She's got a lot of experience though.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 17/09/2023 12:30

I’m a bog standard secondary teacher and I earn more than £40k.

I would guess somewhere between £80k-£100k depending on the size of the school

thebookeatinggirl · 17/09/2023 12:31

The beginning scale for state school LEA Head teachers in England (not Academies or private) is about £54,000. If he was Head at a small Primary, being paid at the lowest end of Group 1 on this pay scale then his take-home pay (minus tax, pension etc) will be about £40,000.

But obviously it depends what you asked him, and how he's answering. Child maintenance is based on gross salary, so if that was what you are asking for, then its doubtful he's telling the truth. Small private schools can pay what they like and the whole thing is also muddied by 'Head of School' posts in academies where there is also an 'Executive Head'. 'Heads of School' may well be paid less.

It is rare to be on above L31 at primary- that's just under £100k from this year. that's 3 form with nursery. London weighting may take you above.

Gooseysgirl · 17/09/2023 12:32

He's lying unless he is telling you what his take home pay is

thebookeatinggirl · 17/09/2023 12:32

Just seen you said 'Secondary'. Definitely not truthful.

Gooseysgirl · 17/09/2023 12:34

I was earning over £40k as an assistant HT, but that was fifteen years ago!

IhearyouClemFandango · 17/09/2023 12:34

Our 1 form entry primary was advertised as £68k last yr

Floralnomad · 17/09/2023 12:35

My son was on 46 k as a HOD an and he’s on mid to late 50k as an assistant head ( secondary academy ) .

BathingBeauty · 17/09/2023 12:35

When I did wages for a MAT HT started on £75k, a Head of Department was on £50k.
Leadership scales start at £40k.

He’s lying.

BelindaBears · 17/09/2023 12:37

It would have to be a minuscule school (or some weird private school) for a secondary head to be on £40k. £70k minimum much more realistic.

handmademitlove · 17/09/2023 12:38

Teacher pay scales can be found here:

Each school is allocated a group for headteacher pay - this is determined by the number of pupils of each key stage. If you know the school you can find PAN and work it out!
