My son aged 8 would like his ears pierced and has asked for it a lot over the last year. Im unsure. Do boys get them done? Is it both or just one?? I would rather he didnt (as hes a boy and im worried about bullying) but he really wants too! Help

It’s completely up to you. You’re responsible for him so you also have authority over him. So if you don’t like it, you can say no. Perhaps give him an age when you’ll “consider it”. I had to wait until 12 and I didn’t suffer any ill effects

cadburyegg · 17/09/2023 00:39

My ds1 is 8 and quite a few girls his age have their ears pierced. I think it's too young personally. If ds wanted his done then I'd tell him to wait a few more years. He isn't mature enough yet to look after piercings.

Annaishere · 17/09/2023 01:14

I wish I’d never had my done. I was about 8 as well. I never wear earrings anyway and one of the piercings is chronically infected, I think because it healed badly

Lahdedahiam · 17/09/2023 01:33

I'm amazed that this morning you're not sure, but this afternoon it's all done? Just he had demanded he wants it done, he doesn't have to wait until a birthday or Christmas etc, just bang it's done.

I'm sure you'll say he has his own money, but don't you say ok, we will research places then maybe visit them and make an appointment for next week/month. Put sone importance and time into a decision like this?

Not just, yeah we will do it today is the way forward?

MrsHughesPinny · 17/09/2023 01:38

This is totally unreasonable of me, but I think it looks really chavvy on little boys. I’d say he has to wait till he’s 16.

And I have ear and nose piercings and my DP is a man with both ears pierced…

This. Unbelievable that it's gone from unsure to having it done in a few hours. 🤔 And reputable places wouldn't often have same day availability .

I don’t believe this post is real at all. No one goes from ‘ not sure ‘ to ‘he’s just had it done’ in less than a day. I’d like photographic evidence with a post it of your username on it as proof it happened 😂. Blank out his face!

I went into a Tattoo/Piercing studio (been there before) to book and they had availability . But I'm a 50+ adult so a spur of the moment piercing is a different scenario than an 8yo .

I wonder if the OP has read the schools regulations regarding earrings (on girls and boys)
My DD had hers done in the summer between Yr 6/Yr7
Junior school rules were "have to remove for PE" but changed to "no piercings in school" (she'd left by then)

In secondary , at Assembly they were asked "Who has had their ears pierced over the summer" . Then "I don't want to see an increase in this number till next year"

Chances are the OPs son will be made to remove it , which is the end of a new piercing anyway .
There;s a reason why there are massive queues outside Claires as soon as the holidays start !

Ear piercings are very popular with boys these days. It's the "in thing" that all the cool pop stars are doing (Harry Stiles, Sam Smith etc). Up to you whether you let him do it but if you do please do it properly with a needle - not a gun.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/09/2023 16:03

Doesn't matter who is having it done .
Harry Styles , Sam Smith, footballers etc aren't at school and don't have to adhere to the school's regulations which are by and large for safety not to spoil what the pupils want to do .

My DD can have whatever colour hair she wants , whatever length of nails she wants and whatever part of her sje wants pierced . Same as my DS .
(Within the confines of their works regulations .)
Because they aren't 9o .

8 is too young - for either sex - IMO

Wait till he is old enough to give informed consent and keep his ears clean properly.

Not true at all. My friend who is a qualified piercer and owns her own shop does walk ins. It's not like having a tattoo that takes hours to do, it's a 10 minute appointment.

I'd let him and I'd leave one or both up to him. It's his body. He can always take them out again. Love piercings don't scar badly

Yeah in fairness an 8 year old knows their body and can decide, no matter what the situation, dangerous, doesn't look good, you know they'll hate it within 10 mins..... I mean they're 8!

Its real! It wasnt a spur of the moment thing. Weve been discussing it for a year. He had enough birthday money in his savings. We didnt book an appt, just went to our nearest city and went into a studio recommended by friends.
