To think people get far too invested in celebrities?

I honestly thought that all the gossip stuff was dying out as I don't really see any OK type magazine adverts anymore so I thought it had stopped existing and the gossip was only confined to a few celebrities.

But just tonight there's people saying that Hugh Jackson getting divorced has made them cry, spreading rumours he's gay, that him getting divorced is the cherry to top of a posters worst day ever and then in the post about the biggest story of the year which you'd imagine was important right? More talking about banal celebrity gossip.

I'm not above gossip myself but why are people letting issues in random peoples lives that often the only information they have about the celebrity in question are curated media pieces or what they see on a screen affect them so much or even so interested in it? I don't understand and I've seen a reasonable amount of celebrities say they hate the parasocial relationship fans feel they have with them.

Taking your thread seriously for a second, some celebrities (or the characters rather) helped me through some tough times when younger because I watched the show. E.g. I will be immensely sad if something happens to Anthony Stewart Head for that reason. And because he is a lovely man, who went out of his way to be kind to me.

I don't have any interest in celebrities, not since I was a teen anyway but I do enjoy a bit of reality TV so it's maybe slightly similar, though since I've had kids I don't watch it like I used to and I don't fan girl anyone but it's a bit of a guilty pleasure.

Yeah I know the post comes across snobby but I'm not sure I can broach it without sounding so. I've watched low brow stuff like naked attraction, made in Chelsea and started the first love island thread for the summer edition. People will say that it's shit and judge me for watching it which is fine but I can say why I watched those two things.

Naked attraction: I didn't believe they'd actually show fully naked people like that on TV. Saw a few episodes until the novelty wore off.

Made in Chelsea: friends were into and I liked seeing random posh/ expensive things that I wouldn't see in my day to day.i watched a few series.

Love Island: it wasn't really about the show ( although i didnt like this summers one and so it stopped me a bit)but I liked previously having big long threads to read and interact with and something that was on each night and I could keep up with. I had a lot going on and liked the routine but as I say this summers one I didn't really like at all so didn't participate that much.

I don't follow celebrities but I am sad about Hugh jackman and his wife. They seemed to buck the trend on the whole and have been together for nearly 30 years!

She's 67 and he's 54? I might be wrong but they stood out and did seem to have a really strong marriage.

OK thank you for the response.I guess I've just never had that connection with a celebrity, I'm not a music fan, and i guess I don't really concern myself with actors ( films are probably my "thing") away from the screen as even with your answer having a quick think nobody came to mind of when I was younger. In that sense I can get the celebrity deaths.

Everyone who posts on MN is the same. We all love gossip and it's what keeps this site going. High brow topics or not, there is a shared interest and that is why you are a long standing Mumsnetter.

So creating others for loving something you have no interest in does not make you better as a human being. It just shows your snobbishness to topics you think are beneath you.

At the end of the day, you have a thread on here to feed off other people's emotions.

I get having a general discussion about a celebrity, but the intesne scrutiny of not hearing a bad (or good) word about them and carrying on like they own them is plain weird
