To think people get far too invested in celebrities?

I honestly thought that all the gossip stuff was dying out as I don't really see any OK type magazine adverts anymore so I thought it had stopped existing and the gossip was only confined to a few celebrities.

But just tonight there's people saying that Hugh Jackson getting divorced has made them cry, spreading rumours he's gay, that him getting divorced is the cherry to top of a posters worst day ever and then in the post about the biggest story of the year which you'd imagine was important right? More talking about banal celebrity gossip.

I'm not above gossip myself but why are people letting issues in random peoples lives that often the only information they have about the celebrity in question are curated media pieces or what they see on a screen affect them so much or even so interested in it? I don't understand and I've seen a reasonable amount of celebrities say they hate the parasocial relationship fans feel they have with them.

I don't understand people who try to police what others are interested in discussing.

I have no interest in Hugh Jackman so I didn't get involved in the thread but other people do. So what?

Start your own "highbrow" discussion instead of a TAAT to slag people off.

Hear, hear!

Weirdly I cried my eyes out when David Bowie died and I didn't even own a single bit of music by him! Still have no idea why it affected me so badly.

I was upset at Bowie dying too. Other celeb deaths have upset me in the past too..... Here's a few...

The Queen.
George Michael
Freddy Mercury
Olivia Newton John
Whitney Houston
Michael Jackson
Paul Cattermole
Darius Danesh
Carrie Fisher
Robin Williams
Kurt Cobain
Amy Winehouse
Prince
Princess Diana
John Lennon
Natasha Richardson
Karen Carpenter
Elvis Presley

I don't apologise for being upset by the deaths of people I have never met before. I feel like I knew them, as they were part of my life, and I saw more of them than I did SOME of my own extended family - albeit it on TV, or in magazines and newspapers.

I do feel a bit sad when celebrity couples who seemed solid split up too.

I don't apologise for this either. And I am certainly not going to sit here and explain why, to some wide-eyed, head-tilting faux confused poster who 'JUST doesn't get it!' Hmm

I 'don't get' why people are obsessed with football, or the gym, or cycling, or golf, or fishing, (or any other sport frankly,) or fashion, or collecting paintings and sculptures. But I don't come onto Mumsnet and start a thread about it, saying 'I just don't understand whyyyyy, can someone pleeeeeeeeeze explain it to meeeeeee?' 😢

continentallentil · 15/09/2023 23:44

Yes it’s weird. I think it’s because we don’t live in communities (we can gossip about) so much.

Hugh and Mrs Hugh have done close on 30 flippping years, that is a good run at it.

Life is long (if you’re lucky) and why not live in a few different ways.

Mouldyfoodhelp · 15/09/2023 23:45

So whys it so interesting? Or important to literally bring people to tears?

Feels weird for people to actively seek out info on random people's bad news, get upset because you found it and then group up and discuss it

I've just seen this and although there's the obvious snark about me i just wanted to say thank you for opening the small crack in the window when you mentioned about seeing some of them more than your extended family.

I found the death of Princess Diana very upsetting.

The celeb I was most upset about was Terry Wogan. He was just always there in the background but there keeping us company. I associate him with mornings with my grandparents

the country will absolutely morn one tv presenter who has given so much joy over the years with his passion for wildlife. I don’t even want to type his name but we all know who I mean 😭

Oh yeah, Terry Wogan's death was sad wasn't it? I loved him! 😢

And yes, when that TV presenter you don't want to name dies -( initials D.A.???) I will be devastated!

Not really, if I wanted to study lions I would go where lions were, it wouldn't make sense to visit emperor penguins in Antarctica and I left a comment on one of the threads I mentioned but also surely it would not have been great to derail those threads, but the same people or similar would also potentially see this thread and it wouldn't be a derailment.

You seem to have taken this very personally with the amount of snark you're leaving on the thread.

WTAF are you waffling on about?

I am posting snark?

Pot kettle black much?

You can't post a thread like this, and then throw your toys out of your pram when people come at you with responses you don't like. Most posters on this thread are not agreeing with you. You seem to be finding that hard to handle. I can see that.

Yes SweetBirdsong that is who I mean 😭

I believe many people will be. I think since the Queen has died he is the most loved and revered person in the country

When seagulls follow the trawler it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.

Making it simple for you: tonight it seems many on MN are in full celebrity gossip mode, so starting a new thread on MN to talk about the general topic of celebrity gossip instead of derailing a current thread that is currenntly participating in it ( and can potentially see my thread and give input) is better than going to a different website/ forum where they aren't doing it and asking them about it

You've mostly come across really infantile so far so I wonder if that's part of itz

Apart from my last post I don't think I'd posted any snarkiness.

I can handle being wrong but that doesn't mean I automatically understand it, but apparently asking for more info is wrong?

I don't have any interest in celebrities, not since I was a teen anyway but I do enjoy a bit of reality TV so it's maybe slightly similar, though since I've had kids I don't watch it like I used to and I don't fan girl anyone but it's a bit of a guilty pleasure.

Yep, I like a bit of Reality TV too. Not TOWIE, Made In Chelsea, and the 'Wives' programmes... like Cheshire Wives and the like.. But Love Island I like, and also BGT and I'm A Celebrity, and Married At First Sight. I used to like Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing On Ice, but I am a bit bored with these now.

Yes, it’s dopey. See also the regular threads on here ripping some quiz show host or former boy and member to shreds because they once skipped the queue at a Costa in Heathrow in front of your cousin in 2012, or didn’t smile at your toddler in a garden centre.

Ha ha!

As I said, you clearly don't like it that people disagree with you. You appear to be finding it hard to handle, and your posts are becoming a bit odd, and hard to understand now. So I will leave you to it. I'm bored with you now anyway.

Mamai90 · 16/09/2023 00:20

I can also understand about people being upset when celebrities die, so far I haven't been (no more than thinking it's obviously tragic if the person is young, drugs etc) but I was a massive Take That fan growing up and I imagine if something happened to one of them I'd be upset, because they are part of my childhood, my memories and it would feel very much like losing a part of my past in some way.

I don't understand why people do a number of things but fanning over a celebrity isn't one of them. It's not like it's harming anyone unless they were taking it to extreme levels.
