To ask if anyone misses aerobics classes circa 1991?

I really miss these - huge busy classes - great atmosphere - thin me!

Much better than exercise classes nowadays.

By the way - I firstly typed 'huge bust' - maybe this should be my goal for 2024 Grin

They still do aerobics & step at my gym! Grapevine and all

BogRollBOGOF · 16/09/2023 15:41

I love step!
When I started post-uni life, I suddenly started driving and stopped a walking heavy job that I had to walk to/ from. Within 2 weeks I was lying in bed at night twitching and realised that I'd barely moved in two weeks, so next day went to the local leisure centre and tried step and loved it. It started a chain of different classes, meeting people and had resulted in a marriage and children! I've always had some fitness thing going on since as well

Whenever I hear "don't you want me baby" my legs want to do an A step 😁

My leotard from 1994 still fits 😁😁😁
It's amazing how lycra stretches!

FedUpOfItA · 16/09/2023 15:43

Yes, yes, yes. I loved it so much I actually qualified as an instructor. I would love to do it again.

I'm having flashbacks from aerobics in GCSE PE. Are there any old school YouTube videos we can reminisce with?

ConcussedPigeon · 16/09/2023 16:22

Another vote for Clubbercise! I loves it, great fun and a great workout too.

Loved these - simple choreography built up over the weeks so that I felt like I was 'dancing', such a fun way to exercise. Loved Step too but still hold it responsible for my huuuuge calves.

Jibo · 18/09/2023 22:16

Pleased to report that both freestyle step and aerobics are alive and well, though nobody wears leotards any more. Easier to find in big cities as they are a bit more niche these days, but well worth it!

Howtosolveit · 18/09/2023 22:20

Yes! I have been trying my whole adult life to replicate but to no real avail. They were just so much FUN!

JamMakingWannaBe · 18/09/2023 22:35

I used to "step" up the half-landing steps in my house as a teen!
Try Les Mills Sh'Bam - very dancy but easy to pick up routines or Konga if it's on at your local leisure centre. If you put in the effort it's a great workout. My teacher had to quit and now we have a Pound drumming class instead. It's not the same as a good boogie.

kitnkaboodle · 18/09/2023 22:43

Oh my word - this thread! Step with the arm band weights was SUCH good exercise, such fun and really motivating. I couldn't wait to do it and I don't think that's happened with any form of exercise before or since. Changed my body shape.
Warm up with The Only Way is Up ... then
Mambo... half turn ... travel across the step 🤣

Craftycorvid · 18/09/2023 22:45

I really do miss step classes! Even though I spent a lot of time going in the wrong direction or falling over. They were still a ‘thing’ up until about the earlyish 2000s in our area.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 18/09/2023 22:46

I loved aerobics. Less keen on step. In the early 2000s they were still doing aerobics at my local Virgin Active.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 18/09/2023 22:47

Step was the only one I remotely enjoyed. ... but I have a serious lack of coordination so I was pretty useless!

I had that video!

kitnkaboodle · 18/09/2023 22:55

I think that was the whole selling point of step - you were so busy thinking about the choreography and enjoying the music that you never noticed the intensity of the workout!

TheFormidableMrsC · 18/09/2023 22:55

I still dig out Jane Fonda classes on YouTube on occasion. Great fun!

NewScenesOfJoy · 18/09/2023 23:27

Aw, I adored Step too. Used to go twice a week to an utterly amazing class, brilliant clubbing music, I remember feeling genuinely excited at the start of each class. The teacher was fantastic at the choreography, he used to teach us sequences that he'd give nicknames to, then he'd just shout out 'rollercoaster!' or 'penguin!' as a reminder of the steps as we made our way through the routine. I used to love putting in loads of extra spins too as I got better and better at it. It was fantastic to dance in formation with the rest of the group, so uplifting. I really miss it!
