To ask if anyone misses aerobics classes circa 1991?

I really miss these - huge busy classes - great atmosphere - thin me!

Much better than exercise classes nowadays.

By the way - I firstly typed 'huge bust' - maybe this should be my goal for 2024 Grin

I loved Step, much more fun than Les Mills or anything else currently on offer at my local leisure centre. Don't miss the thong leotards I used to wear though!

😆 😂 😆
I had a very fetching purple number. Which I'd long forgotten. What were we thinking?

I guess it's not much different from today's 20 somethings in legging which seem to pull in to the arse crack!

I used to go to classes with my mum. Loved it! I remember one routine to “Come on Eileen”! It would have been late 80s I think. Do you remember Lizzie on the GMTV equivalent? And then mr motivator! 😂

Edited

I used to go to a class with a teacher who somehow ended up on GMTV or whatever it was was called at that time, it was unusual to have a male instructor and he was quite easy on the eye. I can't remember his name but I'd love to go back to those days when you really worked hard with great tunes and routines

Onelifeonly · 16/09/2023 13:01

Brings back good memories though I'm not sure the instructors really knew what they were doing.

I go to zumba which is a great workout and good fun. My teacher is into using the whole body, not just following the steps.

Merrilydancing · 16/09/2023 13:10

I love HIIT classes but I recently did and old school aerobics class and once again I was back in the 90’s facing the wrong way, clapping at the wrong time but it was so much fun! Totally loved it!

ChristmasFluff · 16/09/2023 13:45

I love HIIT and I love Shaun T's workouts - but I am nostalgic for Jane Fonda and aerobics. I had no co-ordination, and aerobics finally gave me that in my 20s. There were also 'body pump' classes which were low impact but strength based - OMG, I had difficulty getting off the toilet the days after those!

I never was able to do step though - the co-ordination just woudn't stretch that far and I kept falling over the step.

'Pump Up The Jam' was the warm up to my fave aerobic session, and when I hear it now I get the urge to go into the moves!

And of course, for a generation of women, Michael Jackson's 'Wanna Be startin Somethin' can only mean a Jane Fonda warm up!

Hankunamatata · 16/09/2023 13:46

I loved step aerobics

Longwhiskers · 16/09/2023 14:04

When did aerobics go out of fashion?
I remember my mum’s Jane Fonda and Raquel Welsh vhs tapes!

minipie · 16/09/2023 14:08

Isn’t this basically Zumba ? Not step of course but I’ve done a couple of Zumba classes and there was definitely a grapevine or two - which I couldn’t do for toffee…

BrandNewBicep · 16/09/2023 14:12

Love a grapevine - sometimes do a few in the kitchen when I'm waiting for the kettle to boil.

brightdayloomingdark · 16/09/2023 14:12

i enjoyed those classes back in the day but much prefer the strength based classes nowadays. I like exercise that is tough and challenges me, and aerobics just doesn’t do that. On the plus side, probably thanks to my early aerobics training, I can normally out cardio the young men when we do a bit of that in class Grin

brightdayloomingdark · 16/09/2023 14:13

But if you like a bit of cardio, take yourself along to one of the hippy spiritual free style dance classes and that’s a fun two hour aerobic session right there!

SpookySpoon22 · 16/09/2023 14:17

YES, ME!! I've been saying this for ages! I loved aerobics as it was easy to do the moves, the music was great and so was the atmosphere. Nowadays it feels like you need a dance qualification to join in and can never just join a class and get stuck in. I went to a Les Mills street dance class and it was humiliating! I'm not a bad dancer but there was no way I could just pick that lot up. I was told to give it 6 weeks before I'd get used to it but I didn't want another 5 weeks of embarrassment where I was jumping 2 seconds after everyone else!

minipie · 16/09/2023 14:24

Barre is worth a try for people who like moving in time to the music

NeedToChangeName · 16/09/2023 14:33

I liked old school step moves eg 3 repeater. Tried step recently and the moves were too complicated and faffy. I thought I might break an ankle

PhilMitchellsleatherbomber · 16/09/2023 14:54

I still do step at home, not the same as being with 20 other like minded people so obviously don’t get the camaraderie but I do get a good workout. CDorner fitness has hundreds of step workouts.

Tessisme · 16/09/2023 15:04

I did aerobics classes back then. Loved step aerobics. I went to classes at the local leisure centre. They had a 'ladies' night' where you did a step class, then 30 mins in the pool, followed by a sauna. I went with some work colleagues and we had a blast! I also did loads of videos at home. I can't believe how much exercise I used to do.

SchoolQuestionnaire · 16/09/2023 15:30

Body Attack on the Les Mills On Demand app reminds me of a super cheesy aerobics class. I don’t do it often as the presenters are so fucking chirpy and bouncy and they can get on my nerves if I’m not in the mood. Worth a look if you like that sort of thing though and on the odd occasion I do it it’s actually pretty hard going. Step is also on there but I haven’t tried that as I remember my embarrassing lack of coordination from attempting it in the good old days.

cocksstrideintheevening · 16/09/2023 15:32

Apparently they did on Oti Mabuis show this morning

DragonflyLady · 16/09/2023 15:32

Loved them but by crikey I was so uncoordinated! I recall one teacher coming to me and telling me to just forget about the arm movements! Does always make me think of the Victoria Wood sketch with Hayley Bailey!!

ChevyCamaro · 16/09/2023 15:36

Rainbow Rythms...?

ChevyCamaro · 16/09/2023 15:37

Ha! Sorry that was reply to this:

devildeepbluesea · 16/09/2023 15:37

My council gym offers Fitsteps and Zumba classes, both of which are great fun. They even do proper ballroom and Latin dances. I can’t quickstep for toffee! My favourite though is Group Fight - a bit like Les Mills Bodycombat but better somehow. Music is way better, and it’s just more…choreographed.
I don’t mind the odd Bodypump class but you can stick your Body Attack class where the sun don’t shine!

devildeepbluesea · 16/09/2023 15:37

Rainbow Rythms...?

🤣🤣🤣

Spillwaysofyoursoul · 16/09/2023 15:39

Try Clubbercise - old school aerobics in the dark with glow sticks. Plus no one can see you wobble/eff up

ChevyCamaro · 16/09/2023 15:39

I don't know how anyone ever follows these excercise classes! I had to sneak out of a Zumba class as I just couldn't follow the moves, it was too quick! Was aerobics easier?
