To want cat-owner to acknowledge impact on me?

My neighbour's cats use my garden for a toilet. I'm sick of having to deal with it. On top of plant pots, in my veg bed, etc. They make no attempt to bury it so it sits there stinky until I pick it up. Properly turns my stomach and spoils my enjoyment of my garden on a daily basis.
I know they can't be kept out or trained not to. I'd never want to harm them - they're just being cats! I'd just like some acknowledgement from neighbour that their choice to keep outdoor cats is causing this.
I did ask if they would be willing to take a turn dealing with it, and got told no, cats bury it so you can't even see where it is (some do - theirs doesn't), and anyway that's why they don't keep them in - they don't want to deal with litter tray (were originally indoor only kittens).
AIBU to be upset?

Lob it over to her garden if she’s not bothered. She can clean it up seeing as it’s no big deal.
As for the cat motion activated sprinkler and garden hose is good.
Place bamboo skewers or cutlery upright in the soil- the cat won’t get comfy position to leave a deposit

ASCCM · 15/09/2023 14:17

Gosh, I’ve always said to my neighbours of any issues with my cat to give me a shout and I’ll sort it. This seems really rude!

BMW6 · 15/09/2023 14:17

Get a beach spade or big old spoon to scoop it up and put over the fence into theirs.

Almondmum · 15/09/2023 14:19

YANBU. I have cats and when our neighbour said they were pooing in his garden we took action to stop them - making what was effectively an outside litter tray with sand and gravel. And we told the neighbour to knock on our door if he found any poo so we could clean it up. The outdoor litter tray did the trick but if it hadn't we would have bought him a cat scarer and if that didn't work they have to stay indoors or we'd have got a catio or something.

You can't just shrug your shoulders about your pets shitting all over someone else's property.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/09/2023 14:20

Do what frenchboule suggested. You neighbour is being an arse. You’ve been nice and tried to talk to them. Yanbu to take this suggested route. (And I say that as a cat owner, not that should make any difference).

NotObligedToArgueWithStrangers · 15/09/2023 14:21

I also vote for scooping it up with a trowel and lobbing it over the fence.

This. Every time.

ISeeMisledPeople · 15/09/2023 14:23

I had a cat use my gravel as a cat litter tray.

I didn't need to get the owner involved. Just kept an eye out, and when I caught it in the act, shooed it away. After only three times, it stopped coming round.

Good luck!

septembersunrise · 15/09/2023 14:25

This is unusual because cats usually will bury their poo. Are you sure it isn't foxes?

If you are certain it's cats snd have seen them with your own eyes, you can plant short bamboo canes. Cats also don't like lavender (apparently). Or put pebbles around plants (this is good for weeds too). Cats will never poo on a lawn or on concrete. If your borders / flower beds are no good they will go elsewhere.

If there is visible poo on your lawn or on a patio, this will be foxes marking territory.

LoobyDop · 15/09/2023 14:25

YANBU. I have to admit, I have little patience or sympathy for cat-haters, I just see it as a personality defect. But if one of my neighbours asked me to help remove my cat’s poo from their garden, I’d happily go round and skip it out a couple of times a week. And I’d far rather they asked that than rigged up traps or poison or threw things.

Cats will never poo on a lawn or on concrete. This simply isn't true.

Septembersunrise... I am very sorry but you are wrong.. I can stand at my wondow and watch a cat shitting on my lawn ... all the while looking straight at me!

Are you sure that not understanding the concept of people having different likes and dislikes is more of the 'personality' defect? It's perfectly normal to not like cats!

whirlyhead · 15/09/2023 14:29

One of my cats will definitely poo on the lawn - I've seen him!!

I bought my (very cross non-cat-loving) neighbour one of those cat deterrent devices that send out a pulse of some sorts which helped with the issue. I do feel bad about it but there isn't much I can do to stop them apart from this.

Anyway, I get to listen to their screaming kids in the garden all summer so swings and roundabouts!

I agree that cats can be easily deterred. I am a cat owner and lover. however, I always encourage use of super soaker for unwanted cats roaming into gardens, whether it’s for poo or sitting on car or annoying their dog. It only needs one good soak in my experience to deter my cats. I loan out my super soaker! Everyone happy as people feel heard and understood.

I don’t like the idea of an indoor cat - I think it’s cruel. However, I wouldn’t want anything of mine to upset a neighbour so it’s a no brainer. My neighbours are all lovely and reasonable. A previous neighbour at a previous place was an idiot who left her next door terrace door wide open and then complained my cat went in. I said to make a big noise, use a water gun, bang pans, shoo him out etc. she refused and said she wanted me to keep him inside. I refused of course. I then kept getting notes about my cat ‘murdering’ birds (he had a flap but left them on my doorstep, bless him) and she threatened to call the police about the ‘murders’. At that point I totally disengaged and left them to it!

CalistoNoSolo · 15/09/2023 14:32

Lob all the shit back into neighbours garden, preferably as close to her back door as possible.

AliOlis · 15/09/2023 14:33

I love "vile little familiars" 😂

Great another cat post. It's been a few weeks since the last one.

saraclara · 15/09/2023 14:40

I have a gravel path (of quite large stones) to my front door. One of the neighborhood cats uses it as its litter tray leaving the poo perched on top. So that's one 'remedy' on this thread disproved.

I've had cats all my life until a couple if years ago, so love them and always had outdoor ones. But as far as I know they pooed in their own garden. I'd see then do so through my patio doors, and clear it up at some point.
If the neighbours had a problem I'd probably create a part of my garden to be a big 'litter tray' to encourage them to stay home.

Scampuss · 15/09/2023 14:42

Cats will never poo on a lawn or on concrete. If your borders / flower beds are no good they will go elsewhere.

I always thought that as all my cats have read and complied with that rule, but my neighbour's cat didn't get the memo, and has a favourite spot on the lawn at the top of some steps. It is very definitely a particular cat as we have seen it.

You say that with some sort of pride? You'd kill an innocent animal for behaving like an animal? Psychopath.

ohtowinthelottery · 15/09/2023 14:43

As a gardener who also suffers from the same problem, I can categorically say that cats do not always bury their poo. Nor do they always do it in the borders - but on the lawn! There's so many damn cats around here that I don't know which ones are responsible but the bl**dy things have ruined part of my privet hedge too with their spraying. I had to resort to putting slate chippings down in one border to stop them using it as a toilet but can't do that with all the borders. If I spot a cat in the garden they get chased very quickly but I can't stand guard 24/7.

One of my neighbours put a post on Facebook complaining that her ndn had put anti cat spikes all around his fence and gate. As you can imagine it turned into a bun fight between cat lovers and pi**ed off non-cat loving gardeners.

AIstolemylunch · 15/09/2023 14:45

I have an outdoor cat, that's poos and buries under a particular bush in my garden thankfully ('the toilet bush'). If my neighbours cats did this I would scoop it up on a spade and fling it over into their garden.
