To think there are no good films anymore?

I don't want to sound like a misery guts, but I love the cinema and it's been years since anything I wanted to see was on. Does anyone else think this is the case? It all seems like pointless guff...?

I totally agree.
Everything has been done to death and the same with books.

There have always been crap films. Equally, there are plenty of fantastic films still being made. Try your local independent cinema. I’m looking forward to seeing ‘Past Lives’ and ‘Poor Things’, for example. I like some blockbusters too, and thought ‘Barbie’ was excellent!

Spellbounder · 13/09/2023 20:41

Agreed. Oppenheimer was amazing but we used to be able to go to the cinema at least once a month and see an incredible film. We’d be lucky to see a decent film twice a year now

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 13/09/2023 20:43

I looooovvvvveeee the cinema. I have odeon limitless and it encourages me to see things I wouldn’t normally consider. True, not every film is a classic but I always have a good time and I love the cinema experience.

StoatofDisarray · 13/09/2023 20:45

Dune was beautiful though! I guess it depends what you look for in a film.

MasterBeth · 13/09/2023 20:45

Saw one of the best films I've ever seen last year: Aftersun. Haunting, moving, beautiful.

MariePaperRoses · 13/09/2023 20:46

Correct.

Rubbish acting with people hired because of how they look and not die their acting skills, awful plot and dialogue and CGI over used.

I only watch old films now.

Lentilweaver · 13/09/2023 20:47

I mostly agree. TV is a lot better these days. Succession was better than any recent film I have seen. So is Only Murders in the Building. So many movies are just CGI horrors.

Nitgel · 13/09/2023 20:48

Good films are now rare and hard to find.

Lentilweaver · 13/09/2023 20:52

Also, am I wrong in thinking there is very little middle brow cinema? There are either superhero movies or obscure, sad, depressing movies about the meaning of life. I was rewatching Quiz Show the other day, with Ralph Fiennes. What a brilliant movie. Pacey but intelligent.

Mumoftwoboysaged4and5 · 13/09/2023 20:54

What about Barbie, that definitely wasn’t a film that had been done before. It wasn’t perfect, but at least it was original. Admittedly all the reboots and sequels get me down.

if you look at it from another perspective though, we have original films coming out all the time, just on a different medium. Netflix do some good stuff that’s a bit more daring, because they don’t need to fill a packed cinema. They can also release new films on days that people wouldn’t traditionally have gone to the cinema, like on Christmas Day. I was delighted to watch Don’t look up on Christmas Day rather than be stuck with strictly.

raynedeer · 13/09/2023 20:55

Well rather than moaning it would be brilliant to hear the last REALLY GREAT film you saw?

My favourite films are things like Interstellar, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or a great thriller or even a fantastic rom com. Doesn't need to be high brow, just great. Even the rom coms seem shite now!

Ifulikepinacoladas · 13/09/2023 20:57

Totally agree, apart from the very very occasional new film. I loved Barbie.

Otherwise my rule(at home obv) is to try to only watch films made prior to 2010-ish, so much better! Storyline, script and acting better and less CGI.

cornflakesandtea · 13/09/2023 20:59

Completely agree. We used to have odeon limitless but after covid we just didn't use it like we used to. Like a PP, we used to watch things we wouldn't usually pay for, but there's been absolutely nothing that we'd even consider watching for free. We let the limitless lapse, but I do miss it.

Lentilweaver · 13/09/2023 21:01

Are there any good thrillers anywhere?
I quite liked Barbie. Different, at least.

Springduckling · 13/09/2023 21:01

There are still good films worth going to the cinema for. Oppenheimer was great.

But looking back to the 90s when I went to the cinema every other week, I feel there were more really good films. I was genuinely excited to hear the Oscar results. I like rewatching them - some have dated badly, others haven't.

Now there are a lot of generic action films where a spy gang has to save something or other.

Nitgel · 13/09/2023 21:02

I watched The Gfifters the other day from the 80s that was pretty good, on youtube

wlv12 · 13/09/2023 21:04

Like a PP I also agree that books are all a bit samey right now as well. I wanted a holiday read the other week and couldn’t face another thriller centring round detectives with a dark secret.

Lentilweaver · 13/09/2023 21:06

You know what: I am looking forward to 'Golda' and 'Napoleon'

StoatofDisarray · 13/09/2023 21:18

A Dark Song, Possum, The Ritual, A Field in England: not brand new but I loved them all.

sweetrevenge0 · 13/09/2023 21:18

I watched a really good film the other night called double jeopardy, I loved it. I'm 27 & told a bunch of my older colleagues and they all said seen that 20 years ago 😂😂 I was thinking they don't make films as good as this anymore

Nitgel · 13/09/2023 21:19

Enysmen is quite good

Agree with this. Aftersun was amazing. Triangle of Sadness was terrific too.

I am really looking forward to Bikeriders being released Dec 1.

Needhelp101 · 13/09/2023 21:24

Agree, OP. It saddens me, I used to go to the cinema all the time.
