Yes, I agree. I always say that I find a good film about once a decade, on average. Sorry the ones I'm going to mention are so old - but that's in line with the point you're making, I guess.
The most recent film I enjoyed was 'Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri'. Not perfect, but incredibly moving, nuanced and memorable...and funny in parts!
I'm still waiting to see Oppenheimer, but I've heard mixed reports. Also Maestro. Then there's the one about the Native Americans which my son recommended, but warned me I'd be very depressed by it.
I loved Master and Commander many years ago (absolutely faultless!), and I was an extra in Empire of the Sun (a brilliant film) even longer ago but they are now pretty old, I admit. But that's the sad thing - I do give new films a chance but they disappoint 95% of the time. I liked Titanic when it came out and I know the Lord of the Rings ones were excellent, if you like that kind of thing, which I don't!
I bet Schindler's List is superb but I just can't face watching it. It would just break my heart, I suspect.
