I can't pinpoint when, but it feels like everything that was once pretty good is now quite awful

So expensive
No doctors
Uni costs for kids insane
Terrible rent / can't buy a house
Everyone seems quite unpleasant or racist

Is it just me?

No, your situation is 90%+ down to you, not the government.

I moved to the UK in 2007, arriving with a couple of thousand pounds in savings, and now, sixteen years later, have a good life here.

To pretend that it’s not down to your own choices that your life isn’t what you want isn’t tenable.

Your view is in opposition to every sociologist and political theorist with any heft - even those on the right.

And yes, I stand by the fact that 35 food banks in the whole of the UK in 2010 vs >1400 now means they were comparatively rare then. A forty fold increase.

Katbum · 13/09/2023 22:26

I mean yes, that is demonstrably happening. Politics becoming the domain of the entitled egomaniac, rather than the preserve of the boring ideologue not a good about turn, in hindsight.

CherryPieMadness · 13/09/2023 22:26

I agree actually.

For me it’s a lack of good management, lack of good governance and lack of taking care of people. And the divide between rich and poor is stark but people seem to just be walking side by side as if it’s normal. Middle classes think by being a bit diverse and edgy that somehow masks their privilege, poorer groups trying to keep up with the latest phone but not being able to afford the basics, everyone blaming people like the police or immigration or brexit or the tories and no one has any common sense or solid middle ground anymore.

FirstYouGetTheMoney · 13/09/2023 22:27

FuglyBitch · 13/09/2023 22:22

All the people who say it’s not racist - white privilege??

It’s more that they are aware of the high-quality research that consistently shows that the UK is one of the most accepting countries in the world or racial, cultural and sexual differences.

Dymaxion · 13/09/2023 22:27

Those who say "It's the Tories!": do you actually believe that the Tories are cynically, deliberately, knowingly enriching themselves and their friends at the expense of the country and its people? Because that sounds like a conspiracy theory.

I don't think its a conspiracy theory to say some people in Government are doing exactly as you describe. Factually correct is a better way of describing it.

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 13/09/2023 22:27

Having spent most of the last 18 months overseas in a number of places in both the developed and developing world.

Nowhere moans about their own country more than the Brits - and we have it so much better than a lot of places on pretty much every count.

UK definitely one of the least racist and most tolerant countries there is.

Not exactly a fan of this government, but anyone thinking it's going to be better under anyone else is in for a nasty shock. There's no money, we're paying off Covid, we're in a global economy where people want to buy everything at Shein prices, there's an energy crisis, a war in Ukraine.

The NHS is broken beyond fixing and needs a total rethink - other countries have far better systems and outcomes (and no, not the USA). But no political party will touch it so we all just carrying on moaning while it gets worse.

EasternStandard · 13/09/2023 22:27

Of course! Labour will be in next & things won’t improve. Then who will we blame?

Who do people blame when the thing they’re relying on doesn’t work out

cheezncrackers · 13/09/2023 21:06

You're being ridiculous and have no idea what a truly dreadful country is if you think the UK is one. Try living in Libya, Somalia, Haiti, Afghanistan. You don't know you're born!

Here we go again. It’s not a race to the bottom. Things have deteriorated noticeably, and it’s right to want to do something about it, rather than just shrug and go oh well we’re not as bad as Afghanistan yet.

StarDolphins · 13/09/2023 22:28

Applesonthelawn · 13/09/2023 22:20

Well what are you going to do to make your life better? Not much point just bitching and blaming others, including government. This is a very free country and if you don't like your life, that is to quite a large extent on you.

What would you suggest people do to make their life better? Magic up a doctor?a dentist? Do OF just to pay that extra £800 added to their mortgage maybe?

Hard hit brits are not at fault.

Of course it isn’t, not that anyone should pay attention to sociologists on any matter of importance.

Blaming the government is just something that people do who never learned to take any responsibility.

But you don't hang your head in shame for your own lack of awareness of poverty. I'm speechless.

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/09/2023 22:31

ah, don't worry. Everyone in Jersey seems to think the UK is the promised land and its all so much better 'over there'

You'll soon be inundated by folk form Jersey seeking their UK cheap food shopping and houses

Dymaxion · 13/09/2023 22:33

Immigration - Been a disaster for this country. We've imported millions and millions of poor people who are here for a "better life". Usually at our detriment.

Are you including our Prime Ministers family in this number ?

CherryPieMadness · 13/09/2023 22:33

@Blakeley33 No it’s not the poorer groups that are trashing the country, they are poorer now relative to better off people than they were 10, 20 or more years ago.

I’m not saying that everyone isn’t at least partly responsible, we all are. But those poorer are because the distribution of wealth has gone to those richer. These are facts not opinions. Immigration has an effect for sure, but this is really mixed.

For me it’s like everyone, we haven’t managed ourselves well at all and we’ve let it all be dog eat dog.

It's time for at least one poster on this thread to address their ignorance and not disgrace themselves quite so much in future.

Nonsense. The government should govern. If it does it badly it should be criticized.
Dismissing experts is lazy thinking.

bombastix · 13/09/2023 22:35

Nah, you can blame governments for crumbling hospitals, schools and potholes. You can blame them for paying peanuts to teachers and doctors and you can still find time to work and do we'll and this stuff is still a problem.

I'm a floating voter. I've got my children in private school, my mortgage is going up by a thousand and I'm getting private medicine to avoid the NHS. I would rather have some functional services from the state. It's obvious I won't get what used to come easily from my tax. A conservatives wet dream really, this state of affairs

Wakintoblueskies · 13/09/2023 22:37

Why are people comparing the UK to Norway? America? Germany?

It was never seen as on a par? The popularity of the UK was English is the spoken language, it’s a melting pot and it’s easier to get into than the US?

I've no wish to defend them or their record in government, but I do think they see themselves as acting in the common good, and that for the most part they are trying to make the country a better place. I just think they aren't very good at it.

You’re not serious are you, or are you being sarcastic? During Covid it was quite shameless.

Sorry, you're right. The food poverty under Labour (and my lack of awareness) was indeed shameful. Now it's forty times more shameful and even I've noticed it!
