I can't pinpoint when, but it feels like everything that was once pretty good is now quite awful

So expensive
No doctors
Uni costs for kids insane
Terrible rent / can't buy a house
Everyone seems quite unpleasant or racist

Is it just me?

If I hated a country as much as some on this thread I would be gone and I would make it work.

Same here

It’s absolutely shocking that 50% of households do not pay tax, I’m disgusted.
It's also made up bollocks. Everyone pays tax in some form.

Teddleshon · 18/09/2023 18:27

The figure relates to income tax.

To be fair to the US, and in the interests of clarity, a comment on a specific issue in a certain city isn't exactly a presentation of an objective view, nor is the assertion that there are huge parts of America that are 'very troubled indeed and not pleasant to be in'.

The US certainly has its problems, but the culture definitely is more mutually supportive, less dog eat dog. Philanthropy is alive and kicking. People in general are law abiding and polite. Cities are not scenes of wild debauchery on weekend nights.

It's the country that invented the 4-way stop. I once tried explaining that concept to someone who had driven only in the UK and she was incredulous.

I'm not convinced tbh. The US seems to be even worse than us with all the woke nonsense.

It's easier said than done. I have lived abroad and miss NZ a lot. Its not perfect but it was for me. If I had any opportunity, I would take it but to live there, the visa restrictions are quite tight. I'd have to find a job, hope they'd sponsor me or go there on a holiday visa and look for work, which is effectively illegal. I'd have to find somewhere to live. Last time round, it was hard to find. It would basically mean I'd have to go out there on my own, set up and then bring the family and I'm not sure I want to put my young kids through that, especially as we have no family/friend childcare option to help my husband. All of this costs money where you are not guaranteed a job.

Believe me when I say I have tried. I don't want to be here. If you find an easier option, I'm all ears!

Teddleshon · 18/09/2023 18:51

New Zealand currently has an acute labour shortage and the list of skills shortages, both national and regional runs to many many pages. May be worth having another look.

Tartareistasty · 18/09/2023 19:23

I feel you @Mehmeh22. It's nothing personal against UK but it has massively dropped in quality of life. Everything is pricey, travelling around on public transport requires new mortage (bloody missed the mainland prices tbh) and the general mood is just. Not great.
We recently made the move. DH's field was getting absolute battering and we now see we left just before some serious money loses. It was getting way too gloomy, honestly, the mood is worse than 2008-09 and that's something. I know the whole world is having issues and prices everywhere are going up, but comparing it to my family, we still got screwed more on transport and energy especially.
We don't have kids so basically just said "yup, let's do it" after exploring the options for few months, sold up and went.
My friend moved countries 3x now with kids (+2x before kids) within EU. Not just on a whim, but there were logical reasons always. They adapted really well and live in bloody beautiful area. I am well envious of her mountain view and swimming in lakes (without sewage) 😁
I hope you find a way to do it so you are all happy. Maybe it doesn't have to be NZ but somewhere bit chilled with nice properly accessible nature?

It's a disgrace that businesses, rather than paying their staff enough for them not to have to rely on benefits, or train them so they can progress enough to pay taxes woukd rather pay dividends to shareholders and huge bonuses to directors.

What a load of rubbish - so you have a list of of people who voted leave and your ticking them off as they die?

😂😂😂

+++++

In relation to income tax 47% of income earners pay no tax because they don't earn enough to go over the tax. The top 1% of income earners pay 30% of income tax revenues and the top 10% pay 60% of all income tax revenues.

Whilst it is true that everyone pays tax in some form, for example paying VAT is pretty much unavoidable every time you go to a supermarket. However the richest 50% of all households pay 78% of all tax revenues, which imo seems proportionate but you wouldn't want it going much higher.

What a ridiculous comment. Most people seem sad and disappointed about what the UK has become, not full of hate.

Some of us have left. Silly comments like yours don’t help.

pilates · 18/09/2023 21:29

Why is it a ridiculous comment? 🤨
If you’re not happy with your life do something about it. You’ve left - good for you that’s a positive.

You don’t need to tell people to leave. That’s a very Mail reader comment.

People want to UK to be better. Some are trying to do that rather than making sulky comments.

Why should we all have to suffer because of those who voted leave?
You do know that 35% of those who voted leave are now dead.
Great job they did for us. Yet we all suffer now.

Do you have link for that?

😂I agree, when people cannot come up with a competent response that seems to be their answer.

If I hated the country I was living in, I would move, its not North Korea.

Actually I think a lot of (Leave voters) people in the UK do want a mass clear out of people. They've made that very, very clear. So telling people who criticise the very many problems the country has to go is just them being honest. Unfortunately for me and my children, we missed our chance to leave. Hopefully, once my children have finished their education, these, 'if you don't like it leave' people will be very happy when they do leave. Thanks to brexit, the exit is only for the very highly skilled now, so they're the ones that'll be going.

TheThinkingGoblin · 17/09/2023 17:25

Most of those "poorer" areas voted leave.

Great job you guys. Now, they will become even poorer as you lose all of the EU regeneration funding.

You cannot help people who keep voting against their own interests.

Wishing poverty on kids. The mind boggles. 🤯

I know! Voting for to take away opportunities and deliver more poverty to your own children. I was just at a conference today about the removal of EU funding (as contracts end) for disadvantaged teens and NEETs. We have been given some government funding to replace some money but it's substantially less than before and some programmes helping these young people will be cut.

pilates · 19/09/2023 16:28

@Kendodd
if you read my post correctly I said if “I” hated a country but you carry on with your prejudgments.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/09/2023 16:32

Aren't you lucky to have the means and opportunity to move abroad @pilates? Most of us don't.

I, for one, don't want anymore Brain Drain from my country.

Teddleshon · 19/09/2023 16:35

The UK’s net contribution to the EU in 2020 was over £12bn.

pilates · 19/09/2023 16:35

There you go again you don’t know if I have the means or opportunity but carry on.

Come off it. It was a post full of glee and leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I never get these "you voted Tory, you reap what you sow" etc posts. What is the point of them?

I mistook you for one of the very, very many posters over the years celebrating every time a remain voter leaves the country.
