To think high schools should have a summer uniform like primary schools?

I mean, it gets really hot in the summer and they get uncomfortable in thick material especially when stuck in a classroom all day. Those gingham style summer dresses they have in primary school are thin cotton and help keep them cool. Why don't high schools have a summer uniform like this?

So they wear the same uniform all year round? Madness. I'm in NZ and secondary schools here have a winter uniform, and a summer uniform - even back in the dark ages when I was at school. How uncomfortable it must be wearing winter clothes on a hot day.

I love brown gingham.

So do I - I have two summer skirts in it.

A summer uniform doesn't have to be a dress however. We had dresses when I was at high school in the 70s, but now the local schools generally have skirts and polo shirts.

RedToothBrush · 13/09/2023 20:57

And what would be the cost?

The primary school summer dresses are pretty inexpensive, you can get 2 for £10 in Asda etc. I'm guessing around the same price?

Ours allows PE kits to be worn when it gets hot. Much better than having a separate uniform for a couple of weeks IMO.

My DD would love one, mainly because her uniform is honestly awful, it's...brown. Oh, now am imagining a brown gingham dress. Not cool.

Brown uniforms always make me think of Mallory Towers lol 😆 😅

Are there any (State) secondary school parents where there is a summer dress option able to share the price of the dresses?
Its naive to think it will just be a £10 thing from Asda... DDs school skirts cost £27 each!

colouroftherainbow · 14/09/2023 10:45

I agree with having a Summer option but also agree with PP who said they should work within their current uniform. It should be compulsory for schools to drop the ties and blazers in the heat and then having short sleeves or allowing PE kits seem like reasonable adjustments to current uniform

PuttingDownRoots · 14/09/2023 10:47

One of the schools near my parents have brown and yellow uniforms... they were nicknamed the rotten bananas!

skgnome · 14/09/2023 10:49

A more lenient uniform policy - yes by all means (no need for blazers in hot weather, option for short sleeves, etc)
but given that 95% of teens live in black hoodies (too warm for the summer not warm enough for winter) most of the year - im not convinced they feel the weather changes

Comefromaway · 14/09/2023 10:52

My son wore short sleeved shirts all year round at his high school. Since he left a new head has introduced a summer uniform of shorts. Blazers and ties are allowed to be removed in hot weather.

Why do they need uniform at all?
There's a school near me that just has a dress code which seems to work well enough.

  • because kids often like uniform
  • because its the best way to eliminate fashion/brands as a source of bullying and status
  • because its smart
  • because there's a correlation between uniforms and better behaviour in schools.

I am interested in if you have a good source for point 4.
I used to think this but everything I have read recently says there is no link.

I agree with your 2nd and 3rd points to an extent but I don't think I've met a child who likes their uniform (although that might be the fault of those schools)

ChessieFL · 14/09/2023 10:53

My secondary school in the 90s had an optional gingham summer dress and in 5 years there I never saw even one person wearing one.

The other problem is that if you introduce gingham dresses for girls, what do you do for boys who don’t want to wear dresses? There isn’t an equivalent. The easiest thing is just to say no blazers/ties and short sleeved shirts for all in the summer.

The school near me that wore brown and yellow was known as shitty custard

Shorts and short sleeved shirts with no tie.

Personally I don’t think high schools should have uniforms at all.

My god, of course they should. It would take the kids hours to get ready in the morning if they didn't. Nightmare.

However, they should go back to what it was like when I was at high school - plain white tshirt & black shorts for PE. Plan white shirt, grey skirt, white socks, tie & blazer. The blazer and tie were the only things that were school specific, tie was a couple of quid, blazer wasn't too pricey, and there was a tabletop sale at the end of each summer holiday where parents could sell old good condition uniforms to younger kids. It was great. No branding etc apart from the badge on the blazer and tie to show what year you were in.

Comefromaway · 14/09/2023 13:25

We didn't even have a blazer. It was black or grey skirt/trousers (any style), white shirt (short of long sleeved) and grey or red jumper/cardigan (no logos) in the lower years with optional black jumper/cardigan in the upper years. Literally the only thing that was school specific was the tie.

Simple

Slowlylosingmymind101 · 14/09/2023 13:27

My old secondary school (girls school) introduced trousers for the winter and summer dresses for the summer, the year I went into 6th form. They still do this now. It was very welcome as it was freezing in the winter and too hot in the summer with those horrible skirts and blazers and tights had to be worn all year round.

ManateeFair · 14/09/2023 13:37

I don't think it necessarily needs a separate uniform - but in summer they shouldn't have to wear blazers and/or jumpers. They should also be allowed to swap trousers for shorts and wear short sleeved shirts. Personally I think they should ditch ties entirely as they're pointless and uncomfortable, but certainly in summer at the very least they should be allowed to wear open-necked shirts.

I really don't understand why schools want kids seem to want kids to be physically uncomfortable. My nephew was expected to wear a blazer with a long-sleeved shirt and tie - all day - in 30C weather this year. It just means the kids are hot, sweaty and very uncomfortable and therefore can't concentrate properly.

Shorts and polo shirts maybe? Could also be an option for girls who don't want to wear dresses

A couple of weeks??? I know the UK weather isn't great, but surely it is summer for longer than a couple of weeks! I've seen kids here in their summer uniforms already and we are only mid-way through the first week of spring.

Sumlove · 14/09/2023 21:12

Totally agree, it is ridiculous to make them wear blazers. We used to have a polo shirt in summer. And wasn't as hot as it is now!

Shorts?? That's what boys wear here.

yes a couple of weeks. When it gets a bit warmer they can drop the blazers but it’s only a couple of weeks a year that it’s warm enough to need anything more.

megletthesecond · 14/09/2023 21:14

Yanbu.
Both of my DC's secondary schools added smart shorts to their uniforms in summer.
People in offices have air con and can choose their clothes. Teens deserve the same.

I like the gingham dresses but you would need darts in the pattern to fit senior school girls.

I suspect that wearing a gingham dress would be seriously uncool (worse than wearing a coat in winter).

Yup. My ( private) secondary girls school insisted on gingham dresses during summer term. Not cool when you're 15 🤣
