To get a heat pump Samsung dryer?

Mum1976Mum · 12/09/2023 15:11

Sorry to put it here but I urgently need to get a new dryer as my elderly parents are quite poorly and so are having mine to keep on top of all the washing. I have a Samsung washing machine so ideally want a Samsung dryer to match. However, Samsung now only do heat pump dryers! Which I have heard aren’t great.

Do they take hours and hours to dry a load? Is it possible to just dry a school shirt in a few minutes like I currently do if I need one urgently? Do they save huge amounts or money?

or should I stick to another condenser from
a different brand, even though it won’t technically match and may look a little odd in the kitchen?

Heat pump dryers save loads of money, mine is quite quick with a full load but doesn't work well with just 1 or 2 items

SendARavenToRiverRun · 12/09/2023 15:35

I've got a heat pump. Not samsung though. It's fantastic but slower than a vented or condenser dryer. My recent best buy.

Mum1976Mum · 12/09/2023 15:38

Thanks everyone! I’m really tempted due to the reduced cost but am worried about being stuck in the morning with a wet school PE kit that won’t dry in 10 mins like it will in my condenser.

Where will you keep it? I was going to buy one, but when I told the salesperson that it would live in the shed, she said don't buy it, it won't work effectively as the ambient temperature in the colder months will be too low. I bought another brand's condenser one.

floofbag · 12/09/2023 15:42

Mine take ages but it comes out so lovely and soft

Mum1976Mum · 12/09/2023 15:45

It will be in the kitchen so no worries on temperature.

We have a Samsung and the bloody thing makes so much noise, beeping and singing it drives me nuts. Ours isn't one you can silence, I'd check that yours is.

Mum1976Mum · 12/09/2023 15:48

What brand condenser did you get instead? Did it match your Samsung washing machine in colour?

We have one, and love it - but before this we'd never had a tumble drier at all so to us it's so quick compared with air drying! It has a 30 min quick setting for under 0.5kg of washing - that does a school dress or PE kit for DD but she is only in reception - not sure if it would still work for an older and larger child's clothing. Definitely not 10mins though, so you'd need to plan for a bit more time.

We have a Hoover heat pump drier. Haven't tried the short cycle as I always use it on Care All (or whatever it is called). Together with the washing machine on Eco cycle + full drier cycle it costs less than £1. So very cheap to run

FixTheBone · 12/09/2023 15:59

Similar drying time to a condenser, slightly slower than a vented.

I have one of the 10kg ones, costs less per load than my samsung washing machine to run, and dries a full mixed load in around 2 hrs, a few shirts maybe 10-15mins, although very rare I'd run it for such a small load.

For the price of the dryer, you could probably buy a new shirt each school day for a year.... Or another way of looking at it, you could buy 5 shirts, one for each day of the week, then the drying time isn't important...

Thanks for all your opinions. It’s a really hard decision. Just don’t want to be stuck unable to dry something I urgently need in 15 mins or so.

If your priority is time, no, don't get one. We have a heat pump Samsung and it takes hours, and hours and hours and hours. There's no faster options. It is also hard to get it to completey properly dry things.

I constantly have a pile of wet clothes awaiting their turn in the dryer. I have to leave it on when I go out, when we go to bed etc. I don't have a choice. If I didn't do that, it just wouldn't be feasible.

My parents have an ancient whirlpool cheap one, it's SO fast and makes the clothes so hot. It's my dream.

Next time I'm buying a dryer I'm not getting a hear pump. Absolutely not.

LinenUnionGlassCloth · 12/09/2023 21:14

Bosch heat pump here. Fabulous, doesn’t take too long, woollen dryer balls cut the drying time anyway if you’re worried about it.

Not sure why you’re so concerned after all this reassurance tbh. How often do you need something within 15 mins?

basketofsoftkittens · 12/09/2023 21:15

I have a Grundig heat pump tumble fryer which is amazing. Wouldn’t ever get anything different.

Mum1976Mum · 12/09/2023 21:17

Ahhhhh so many conflicting reviews! I often need something quick as all the children’s uniform is logoed and expensive (can’t afford more than 1) so sometimes I realise I’m short of something in the morning and have to do a quick wash/dry. Maybe I should stick to condenser

I have a Samsung heat pump dryer and 3hrs 30 is my usual cycle. It can recalculate depending on weight etc but yes it’s slow

for me time isn’t a pressing issue so it doesn’t bother me. If time is key for you id not recommend it

It won't dry anything properly in 15 mins .

fedupnow2 · 12/09/2023 21:19

We have a Bosch and it is brilliant. Almost everything goes in and we use it daily. A load takes 1.5 hours maximum and it is the best thing ever during winter. And it really warms the room up as well.

Winter2020 · 12/09/2023 21:24

Hi OP,
When I was making the same decision I went for an ordinary condenser as I heard the heat pumps don't work well in cold temperatures and our kitchen can be cold in winter. I also thought as I use the dryer more in winter the heat kicked out by the dryer isn't wasted energy as it warms the room.

Dontknowwhatimdoing1983 · 12/09/2023 21:29

My heat pump drier is shit. Sorry to be negative. It’s takes hours. It’s a hot point, not sure if that makes a difference. Sometimes 4 or 5!hours to do a load

Yellowlegobrick · 12/09/2023 21:36

We had a vented before, now have a bosch heat pump.

It is slower than the vented, especially if you use the automated "cupboard dry" etc which are supposed to detect when its dry - these don't work well with a smaller load.

But can do the 20 mins "warm" and its quicker.

Its much cheaper on the elec bill.

Why would you be stuck with wet washing on a school morning? Wash it the night before on a quick wash and dry it over night.

FlyingFlamingo · 12/09/2023 21:37

We’ve got a Beko. The ‘extra dry’ setting starts at 3.5 hours but it never actually takes that long, but it is slower than our previous vented dryer. Most loads take less than 2 hours, I’ve never tried to just dry one item quickly though, I just throw the full load in. I find running an extra spin cycle at the end of the wash makes a big difference. It uses much less energy - about 1kwh per cycle so around 30p on a standard tariff.

Passthecoffee · 12/09/2023 21:38

I have the Samsung heat pump dryer and have had it for around 2 years. Best dryer I've ever had (previously had a condenser that I just stopped using as it didn't dry clothes properly at all).

I would add that I also have the Samsung eco bubble washing machine - which has a daily 1.02hr cycle. Working in tandem with the dryer so wash done, into dryer, next load in washer, dryer usually finished and clothes dry before washer finished again.

The timer when I put it on will usually say 3hrs but this adjusts to the weight of the clothes and is never on this long. It may be helped that the clothes are on the highest spin option in the washing machine.

What setting are you using on the dryer?

I use the 1.02 wash for everything on the ecobubble and it is much, much faster than the dryer. It ends up out of sync and I have piles of wet washing waiting to go in. Could probably wash 3 loads in the time one takes to dry.

I absolutely hate the dryer for this reason but maybe a different setting would change my life.
