Vinted as a buyer is shit?

Strawberryfieldsforeverrr · 12/09/2023 07:33

Having successfully sold loads I thought I'd give buying a go.

I bought one of those little handbags with the interchangeable straps, described as genuine leather, brand new. I assumed she had bought it and it didn't suit, so was selling.

What arrived was a plastic monstrosity drop shipped from China, absolutely not as described.

I emailed the seller who acknowledged that it's plastic drop ship shit from China, and asked me to return for a refund. Their preferred courier is a PITA arse one for me.

So I'd be about £8 down (postage both ways, Vinted buyer protection), plus about half an hour if my time.

Vinted aren't really contactable, although I have reported the seller.

AIBU to think that Vinted is a load of shit as a buyer, and people who acknowledge they are lying in the add hould be banned?

That can't be right that you have to pay return postage for something that was significantly and deliberately described wrongly?

I hate it when people price items that end up costing more than buying new when fee + postage are factored in!

Same! There seems to be a weird trend with Tonie box story figures on vinted... they all seem to be listed around £10 minimum but when you add on buyers protection and postage it comes to more than you would buy them new (£15).

Clevs · 12/09/2023 08:53

I've been lucky so far and not really had any bad experiences as a buyer or seller. I did have one person that didn't send the item I'd bought but I got refunded and I left her appropriate feedback. I then found the same item from
another seller for the same price that was in as new condition.

I've recently had a really good experience as a buyer as well. I was looking for a some play suits ready for my holiday and made offers on a few. I didn't realise at the time but offered on two from the same seller. It wasn't until she accepted both offers and I'd paid for one of them that I realised. So I messaged her saying I wanted both but could she cancel the transaction of the one I'd paid for and I would offer on a bundle so I only pay one lot of postage. She said it didn't matter and would put the other one in anyway, she didn't want any money for it.

When the parcel arrived the items were in immaculate condition and fitted perfectly. And I'd only paid £3 plus postage. They were decent brands too. So there are still decent sellers out there but there's also lots of scammers/timewasters.

Been buying loads of baby clothes on Vinted recently and never had an issue with it as a buyer.

That said I’m not sure I’d buy a bag off Vinted.

Totalwasteofpaper · 12/09/2023 08:56

Agree it's got weirder recently.

It's crap for buyers and sellers.

I sold a bntw JoJo outfit for 18-24m which was £29 new and listed for £8 today but only after I had numerous people messaging to offer £3 or £4... someone offered £2.50.
Get real ...

DrManhattan · 12/09/2023 08:57

I sell on there but not a chance I would buy anything.

Toonali8 · 12/09/2023 08:58

I think it’s shit all round.

Buyers want to get things for £1 and sellers take ages to post and often, like you experienced, it’s not what it says it is.

I deleted the app long ago and just use depop/eBay or charity shops now.

FoodCentre · 12/09/2023 09:02

Perhaps some sellers simply don't understand that "silk", "suede", "leather", "linen", etc., are specific terms about what the item is made of

Oh, come on. No-one is that stupid.

There are people in this country that don't know what a cervix is. I think it's possible people don't know about suede, for example. Or don't care about real bs fake leather themselves, so might not automatically think to specify which.

watchingsmurfs · 12/09/2023 09:06

I absolutely love Vinted. I buy and sell a lot.

I just stick to brands I know and scrutinise the pictures. If it arrives and doesn’t fit I just stick it back on.
It’s been brilliant for kids things.
In the past month I’ve bought virtually brand new Vans trainers for my son for £6; like new leather shoes for me - still on sale in the store for £250, for £30; Toast denim pinafore, like new, £60. Plus several cheaper bits and pieces, all perfect.

Agree their buyer protection isn’t great but the delivery issues are Evri, not Vinted. Fortunately my local Evri service is good.

MegaCookie · 12/09/2023 09:09

I’ve had some fantastic bargains from there, but I’ve also been screwed over a few times too. One time I complained to Vinted about a seller who hadn’t sent my package but kept the money - she said she had sent the tracking details but hadn’t and when I asked for them again she said no because I’m a liar. Vinted said they would give me a refund but only if I agreed to retract my negative feedback? It was weird. I’ve had a jumper sent that said it was a small but the label literally said medium. The seller said I must be faking it 😂 there are some absolute charlatans around. But then I’ve had some fantastic stuff too, it’s swings and roundabouts.

VeridicalVagabond · 12/09/2023 09:13

It's been a mixed bag for me.

Got a cracking pair of winter boots for £3, I've seen identical ones listed on there for £25-£30 so felt very savvy to have snapped those up.

Bought a leather jacket that was listed as being real leather but was very much not when it showed up, but that one was a gamble anyway as I doubted she'd be listing real leather for £5 but thought I'd try my luck. The jacket is actually ok.

Got a top supposedly in "excellent" condition turn up ratty as all hell and stinking of smoke, not cigs but sort of incense, which I hate. That one went straight in the bin, wasn't worth fart arsing around with postage.

And a surprising number of things just never showed up.

Namechangedtoanswerthisone · 12/09/2023 09:16

As a seller it's not great. Genuine items but sellers want it all for a few quid since they then add on buyers protection fee and then postage. If you use multiple items discount you end up selling lots of things together for a few pounds only. By the time you package up and drive/walk/take to a drop off point, maybe print label etc it's all a bit of a waff.

Good if you are really short of cash though, otherwise give to a charity shop as a seller.

Ah ah,

Loving your last comment. True there are people in this country that don't know what a cervix is and think you can actually change sex. 🙄 So I agree not surprised that they don't know what silk it 😂

ChatBFP · 12/09/2023 09:19

@Totalwasteofpaper

I have the opposite - lots of sellers selling premium brands wanting money that when, combined with postage, means you are better buying new.

I also think that if you search new with tags, you get sellers who seem to have a lot of new with tags, so maybe some people are using it to sell shoplifted goods

GentrifiedLDN · 12/09/2023 09:19

Out of the 30+ things I have brought, I have had one rubbish experience and the seller was pretty rude about it too, and asked me what the hell did i expect

SamW98 · 12/09/2023 09:25

I’ve been pretty lucky with Vinted but I only buy within my selected filters and always read the sellers reviews.

Ive bought and sold over 300 times and only had a tiny handful of issues. I do agree about the postage though when you return an item. I think anyone selling something not as described should pay return postage.

CoinsinaJar · 12/09/2023 09:25

Another tale of Vinted woe from me .... just bought a pair of high end boots for £180!!! Looked OK on arrival, but literally dropped to pieces within an hour of wearing them. Seller not interested, no hope of a refund and Vinted only quote their "policy" when you report. So ..... Buyer beware and an expensive lesson learned.

The take away lesson here is NOT to click the "Everything OK" button before you've given the item a thorough try out and inspection.

Having said that, I have bought other things (lower value) and been pleased with them. Not ventured into selling anything .... it feels like a minefield.

Banana1979 · 12/09/2023 09:25

I have bought some things on there that are amazing, I found the exact pair of shoes that were stolen from my suitcase on holiday this year and some vintage items I’ve been looking for , for a long time
but there is a lot of tat on there also, I would look at seller feedback before buying. I also by knowing full well that if I have to return, it will be at my own cost. If that bag looks okay, I would just use it and cut my losses

Skogrammy · 12/09/2023 09:26

If you return anything on vinted you have to cover your own return postage?

LancreWowhawk · 12/09/2023 09:28

I've got a bunch of stuff in my wardrobe that I really need to get rid of because realistically I'll never wear, but it breaks my heart just to send to charity. But I have been putting off putting it on Vinted because I just can't believe it won't be a massive pain in the arse, and I'll likely only get a few £ anyway.

roseopose · 12/09/2023 09:29

Agree, I'm not going to buy through there again after receiving a 'new with tags' top which did indeed arrive with the tag on but also with giant water type marks all over it. Seller denied all knowledge but did refund after I returned, but I was left out of pocket for the postage. This basically means sellers will send things in awful condition and just hope you can't be bothered to return or will balk at the cost. I thought new with tags would be pretty safe but evidently not.

Dramatic · 12/09/2023 09:31

I must have been lucky, I've bought tons from vinted and never had a bad item.

Viralsunflower · 12/09/2023 09:33

I have only had good experiences buying on vinted.

As a seller though, I get pissed off. I price things to sell as it is and people make such cheeky offers. I have a bundle of girls dresses on there at the moment that are BNWT, you can see from the tags that I paid about £30 for all of it but I have it priced at £8.50 for a quick sale. 5 items. I have received offers of £3 - £5.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 12/09/2023 08:49

Oh yes you do! Which is great for sellers because there's probably a significant amount of people who would rather suck it up and not pay to return something crap.

Lastarse · 12/09/2023 09:36

I used to love Vinted and took it on the chin if something wasn’t great & just donate or recycle as I never spend much on every item. Recently I’ve had some bad sellers and zero customer service from vinted - they really are shit in that I have to pay to return an item when the seller is lying. Also a new breed of sellers that don’t send items and won’t respond and yet are still actively selling. Then the weird fakes and sellers who steal other peoples pictures to sell (scam). Vinted need to up their game as it’s getting too risky to bother.
