Anyone grabbed a scalding hot pot handle? Help!

Help, posting for traffic…

2 hours ago I carefully used an oven mit to take a frying pan out of the oven. Seconds later I had a brain fart and went to pick it up minus the glove

We made the mistake of first going for ice but have since had my hand submerged (and moving about) in a large bowl of lukewarm water

its been 2 hours now and every time I either stop swishing my hand or take it out I’m in AGONY and tears

i can’t see blisters al though my hand is shrivelled from the water! But I have white spots across my palm and up my fingers

Anyone else made this stupid mistake and have advice? I don’t know how I’m going to sleep!

Vaseline? Cling film? Leave to air? Help!

Run under cold tap with running water for ages. Do not add cling film, Vaseline or any kind of cream.
keep running it under tap. If it burns when you remove it keep holding it under water.
if you get blisters go to A &E or minor injuries unit

Chestnutz · 11/09/2023 22:28

From NHS
You should go to a hospital A&E department for:

  • all chemical and electrical burns
  • large or deep burns – any burn bigger than your hand
  • burns that cause white or charred skin – any size
  • burns on the face, hands, arms, feet, legs or genitals that cause blisters

Aww hope you're ok. I did the same on Christmas day a few years ago. I had some of those migraine forehead gel pads that I put in the freezer then strapped it to my burnt hand. It worked well at drawing out the heat.

Loadedbydeath · 11/09/2023 22:29

Why a 'mistake' of ice? Best thing for it. Immerse in glass or bowl of ice for a long while so it numbs everything. Top up with fresh ice as needed.

Did this years ago when scalded by pan steam.

MouseLouse · 11/09/2023 22:30

You need to call 111, keep it in cool water until then.
Do not do anything else without advice of 111.

I'm sorry, I know you wanted an easy answer, but I think you might have to go to A+ E.

You might need to speak to a surgeon if you have deep tissue burns.

Certainly never bothered with A nd E

peachgreen · 11/09/2023 22:30

A&E for burns to the hand, especially on the inside. Sympathies OP, it’s horrible!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 11/09/2023 22:30

Still agony adjust that length of time and on your hand then you need to go to A&E and have it seen to. Don't mess with burns on hands, the impact on the mobility of your fingers can be significant.

A scald is not a burn.

Ice is too cold, it can cause a burn itself or frostbite. Cool running water is best

monsteramunch · 11/09/2023 22:32

@Loadedbydeath

Current advice (from NHS, Red Cross etc) is never to put a burn directly in ice but instead use cool water, it can further damage the skin.

•	cool the burn with cool or lukewarm running water for 20 to 30 minutes – do not use ice, iced water, or any creams or greasy substances like butter

TregunaMekoides · 11/09/2023 22:33

I've done exactly the same.
I alternated between very cold water for as long as I could bear it and then a five minute break for probably about an hour. I got away with it just being tender for a few days.

I'm not sure luke warm water is the best thing, I've never heard that?
Personally I'd probably call 111 if you're bothered. I wouldn't start with A&E

plominoagain · 11/09/2023 22:34

I did exactly this and eventually went to an and E after immersing it in constantly refreshed cold water for two hours . They took one look and told me off for not going earlier . I ended up having to have it dressed for almost ten days to prevent infection and on some really strong painkillers . I still have a patch across the palm of my hand that shows where it happened .

Bimblepops · 11/09/2023 22:35

I did exactly the same thing a few years ago. Got my hand inspected and properly bandaged up.

Get yourself to A&E so that an expert can take a look at your hand, it’s not worth risking mobility.

Thanks for sharing this, I'd not seen it before.

A & E I'm afraid

Fine. Worked for me, and I had serious blistering, but it was 2008🤓

clh977 · 11/09/2023 22:37

I really feel for you OP, I did this a few years back but it was manageable with really cold water for as long as I could stand and then painkillers. I think you should go to A&E to get checked

whoknowswhyanyonedoesanything · 11/09/2023 22:38

OP - I've done similar many times and you just need to be patient. Keep submerged in cool water, check periodically - eventually after about 2 hours (sorry!) the pain will go. Add a bit of extra cool water occasionally. If it's not blistering, weeping, then it is probably OK and you acted quickly. It honestly just takes ages. In my experience it will be tender and sore for some time and slowly heal. Don't put any crap like vaseline on it, it just needs cool water. It depends on the size of the burn, is it just from grabbing the handle? Obviously if you feel sick or it seems deep/open, you should seek medical help. xx

FawltyTower · 11/09/2023 22:39

Ice and then a bowl of lukewarm warm water 🤦‍♀️

Instead of asking randoms on MN, do what you should have done hours ago - Google burn treatment and follow it. It pops straight up on the NHS website.

FrenchBoule · 11/09/2023 22:39

Cold water.

Get yourself some lavender oil. Works fantastic on burns, really speeds up healing.

Ouch OP 💐

MargaretThursday · 11/09/2023 22:39

I did this, and had it dressed at the GP.

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/09/2023 22:40

I treated my sisters horribly burned palm (she grabbed a baking sheet still hot from the oven for no obvious reason then turned around before putting it down!!! Anyone else would have dropped it immediately)...

Cold/cool water for as long as possible - 20 to 30 minutes or more not 5 minutes most people think this means!

Clean honey on a dressing, wrapped up - changed often.

Healed fantastically, no infection.

Manuka honey is better but any clean honey is better than none.

No oil based/fat based ointments and if you haven't got clean honey then nothing (don't use a jar with toast crumbs but if you do have a squeeze bottle thats already open thats still fine). Use a dressing that is non-stick.

If you can see A&E, do, but you could be spending a long time without treatment to do so unfortunately.

Chilledtorybeats · 11/09/2023 22:43

I did the same thing, was nearly being sick from the pain. Did the same as you and kept it in water couldn’t take it out without the pain returning. Went to bed with pain killers and holding an ice block. I burnt the palm of my hand and the underside of thumb and fingers but it heeled fast.
It didn’t blister which I was surprised about but I did have white patches.

fizzysoda · 11/09/2023 22:46

Hello, I work as a nurse. My advice would be to attend A&E to get your hand checked and dressed. Hope you feel better soon
