To report neighhours to the police for smoking cannabis?

Our neighbours smoke cannabis for several hours a day, most days, but worse at the weekends when they smoke literally all day. They smoke it right outside their back door so it blows directly up the side of our house and the flat above them and seeps in through the windows but seems to get in even if the windows are closed. As a result our house stinks of cannabis,. Neighbours both side are pissed off as it's literally every day plus our next door neighbour in the flat above shares a garden with them and they let their dog crap all over the garden and don't clean it up for days. I've asked them twice before to stop smoking cannabis all the time and they said they would but didn't and completely sick of the stench, plus my 5 year old has had breathing trouble the last 2 weeks which we think could be linked to the smoke. Also to add that they have 2 kids of their own, a 5 year old and baby and I dread to think how much exposure they're getting. I want to call the police as I want it to stop but I hate being a snitch plus fear reprisals, as do our other neighbours who share the garden with them. AIBU?

You can report it but they won’t do anything at all. Only ask to collect evidence that they are suppliers/dealers. Speaking from bitter experience.

Thewizardbinbag · 11/09/2023 22:15

They won’t do anything and you’d never be able to sell your house.

winterrabbit · 11/09/2023 22:19

Really? I didn't realise prospective buyers could check complaints made to the police? Are you sure that's right? Not planning on selling anytime soon.

Our neighbours said they're going to complain to the local authority as it's a council flat. Not sure if they can do anything? Probably not.

I really wouldn't bother OP. The police will do nothing at all (I say this from experience). Plus you do have to declare things like this when selling.

Not worth it. If it is that bad, I'd move. Bad neighbours never, ever get better.

TregunaMekoides · 11/09/2023 22:22

The police won't care unless they are selling it

You must declare any neighbour disputes, so if you report them for something then you need to declare it when you sell.

winterrabbit · 11/09/2023 22:23

Would the police not even drop around?

Would the police not even drop around?

They might or they might not but what good would it do if they did?

They're not going to admit to smoking it and they're hardly likely to stop.

winterrabbit · 11/09/2023 22:25

Yes, remember now that you have to disclose that. Not sure I care at this point. I don't think we'll have any problem selling when the time comes.

winterrabbit · 11/09/2023 22:27

They won't have to admit to anything. One whiff of the inside of that place will reveal all. You're right though, they probably won't stop though but at this point I would take just having them cut down to once or twice a week instead of near constant as it is now.

MiniTheMinx · 11/09/2023 22:27

I believe you can report via crimestoppers anonymously. Reporting someone in possessionbof a class B or for causing a nuisance with criminal behaviour is not the same thing as having a dispute with them.

bombastix · 11/09/2023 22:28

No the police are not going to come around! You have do say your neighbours are smoking crack and then they might turn up.

I live in a naice area. There is a very large cannabis plant growing in a old building across the road.

It is the old police station.

TregunaMekoides · 11/09/2023 22:29

Very unlikely.
As crimes go, smoking cannabis in your own home is barely on the radar. As with all public services,.the police are stretched to breaking point and rarely even investigate car thefts and the such like. Hence the recent comments from the Home Secretary re police must investigate all crime (all words and no practical action such as increased funding as per).

You might have more luck with social services and the kids being around drugs, but not sure if that's a door you're really want to open.

BeeVer · 11/09/2023 23:15

Your 5 year old having trouble breathing is very very unlikely to be linked, you should take them to a Dr if you haven’t already.

Get yourself some weed, back it into brownies, leave on their doorstep (ring bell and run).
They'll whitey so much probably won't touch it for a while and will give you a break.
Get a universal control and see if you can switch their tv channels to compound their need to stop.

I got pissed off years ago as neighbours are huge weed smokers.

I basically slammed all windows whilst shouting if my daughter's uniform stinks if weed tomorrow (she was 6) then I'm straight on to the council!!!!

They have a shed now to smoke in.

Police won't do anything. Council, maybe?

winterrabbit · 11/09/2023 23:29

Our neighbour already reported them to the Council I think as they are council tenants and I think he is too so they're obliged to sort it (unlike with us), the dog shit too as it's preventing them using the garden. The poo is awful too - piles of it everywhere left for days on end.

Can you deposit on their route in/out?
Just keep reporting but go more with safeguarding/anti social behavior.

OP you have my utmost sympathy as I am in the same situation. My neighbour (s) smoke weed 2 feet from my kitchen door, as our balconies run alongside each other and, as my door is open so I don't pass out in the heat, terrible skunk fumes pervade the whole flat before I have time to slam the door shut. He gets his supplies delivered on Fridays, so weekends and Mondays are hell, until he runs down his stock a bit. (He is also a dealer). I regular shout at him to go and do it in his garden and he is quite scared of me and sometimes does but eventually he does it again. We are in council flats, so next time it happens, I will tell him I am going to complain to the housing officer, as it definitely is in both my lease and his tenancy agreement that we are not allowed to do anything that disturbs or annoys our neighbours. Fortunately, our council are quite good. Hope his partner is on MN and reads this.

ALongHardWinter · 12/09/2023 01:23

The police will more than likely do nothing. I speak from personal experience.

Saltyswee · 12/09/2023 01:26

Do they not have jobs? How can they do it all day and go to work ?

greengobbledygook · 12/09/2023 01:33

If they are council tenants, there's something you can try.

Phone police, say you are sure there is a grow in the house. They'll drop round, the tenants have no obligation to let them in without a warrant but they might.

They won't find a grow, but likely to find them smoking. If that's the case, you can complain to the council who can verify this with police and they'll receive a warning.

They won't stop smoking but you might get a break from the smell for a short while.

MsLavender · 12/09/2023 02:06

I reported when the same thing happened to me, the smell was so strong in my sons bedroom I was convinced someone had set up a cannabis farm in their attic! I didn't know exactly who was smoking it so it was trickier but the police did come round AND I got a lovely community police officer up into my attic with a torch to check that out because cannabis farms can be a huge fire risk. Thankfully there wasn't one. They said if I figure out where it's coming from then to give them a call back, they also walked down my street quite often for a while because they said if they can smell it they will knock on doors and if they can smell it they will get a warrant and do a search. They told me that the most common way they get people for it is when they smell it past a house and that the courts pretty much always give them a warrant in that case. Perhaps I was lucky with my experience of the police dealing with it.

Anyway I got fed up of my sons bedroom stinking of it so I went knocking on doors but every either denied or didn't open the door. So I posted letters explaining and said they were welcome to come around and smell my house to see how strong the smell is and that whilst I have no objection to anyone smoking whatever the hell they like I DO object to my childs bedroom stinking of it and that I would have to report it to my own landlord and other peoples if it continued. It stopped overnight. Oh and I bumped into one of the officers who came round to investigate and told them about the letters, she was shocked it worked but again told me to call them if it happens again.
