I'm not talking a pale or neutral colour. I mean like a pink or something. has anyone done this? How does it look? (i would also do the cornice)

It's fashionable at the moment to have a colourful ceiling. I like it, it's so much nicer than grey and beige neutrals. Go for it!

Purplecatshopaholic · 11/09/2023 10:41

I like the idea of this, but have heard it makes the room look smaller (maybe not an issue in a big room right enough)..

Lessstressedhemum · 11/09/2023 10:42

I have my ceiling the same colour as my dark walls e.g 3 walls duck egg, one wall and ceiling very dark blue-green, 3 walls cream, 1 wall and ceiling terracotta, 3 wall ivory, 1 wall and ceiling a fox coloured red-brown. I love it. I think it looks fabulous, much better than having a white/cream ceiling.

MonikerBing · 11/09/2023 10:43

I did it when I painted my house dark colours and think it looked fab! It made the ceilings look higher. I had various shades of pink, dark blue, turquoise, purple on the walls around the house and did all the ceilings the same colour

I still have them the ceilings the same colour as the wals, it's just that they're all white now.

Curseofthenation · 11/09/2023 10:46

I personally think coloured ceilings look nicer with walls only partially painted in the same colour, either up to a picture rail or about a quarter of the way down a wall.

We live in a house that is painted entirely white though 😅.

This is the colour I would be using, and it would be in the dining room. Is this too wild?!

It's not a big room, but I am going for cosy vibes!

That's a lovely colour but I'd probably break it up with something light for highlights - so the skirting and doorframes.

EmpressSoleil · 11/09/2023 11:51

Personally I would do the cornice white for contrast. That's what I did in my living room. I also did the ceiling a shade lighter than the walls, so still coloured but again some contrast. I really like it and wouldn't go with a white ceiling again.

LuckyMoonstone · 11/09/2023 12:00

@LuckyAmy1986 that is literally the kind of colour I want for my dining room, I also want cosy vibes and I plan on doing the ceiling too plus woodwork, coving etc. It’s called colour drenching- go for it!

Barkcloth · 11/09/2023 12:15

I did this in our loft-conversion bedroom where there are slopey bits (so confusion over what counts as ceiling), and the ceiling is relatively low. It's a paleish blue (but definitely blue, not white-with-a-hint) with a wallpaper feature wall. Looks nice and I'd do it again.

Thelnebriati · 11/09/2023 12:16

It depends on the room, the colour and the light. Use a test pot on some wallpaper and hang it up in the room, look at the colour in bright sunlight, and under artificial light.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 11/09/2023 12:19

Go one or two shades lighter for the ceiling, it gives an impression of height and feels lighter as well.

LuckyAmy1986 · 11/09/2023 12:37

Ok I may go a bit lighter on the ceiling then. I think I am just going to go for it! The white ceilings are boring me!

Here you go...nothing discreet or subtle about this. I love it, although sadly it now functions as a storage room for my furniture business

@Kitsmummy love it! I am NOT looking for subtle tbh. I think I am over boring neutrals.

I can't work out your ceiling. Is that two different tones or is it just the light?

I remember in the 1980s my Dad painted my bedroom ceiling the same pinky-purple colour as the walls.

It made the room feel much smaller, but also more cosy in winter.

We all laughed enlessly about it though, cos he literally did it out of laziness and 'I couldn't be bothered to do the cutting in'. Because of the colour, we called it the bed-womb.

Nanny0gg · 11/09/2023 17:38

Did it in the 80s

Looked lovely and fresh when we went back to white!

Glass, brass, chintz, dado rails and paper borders either sat on the dado rail or under the cornicing. Most (bar the chintz and paper borders) of this is making a come back

CCSS15 · 11/09/2023 17:52

Did it yesterday and agonised over whether to do it or not. In the end left the coving white and painted everything else french grey by farrow and ball

PollyIndia · 11/09/2023 17:54

I've got my ceiling and walls painted duck green by farrow and ball and I love it. Feels so cosy and lovely in there. My kitchen is full of sunlight with skylights and bit crittal style doors, so it's a nice contrast.

Lilyhatesjaz · 11/09/2023 18:01

Did in my bathroom, quite a bright blue. It looks really good, but bath sink tiles etc are white so it's not overwhelming

Kitsmummy · 13/09/2023 05:53

@LuckyAmy1986 ...all the same colour, it's just the light making it look a bit lighter

Gettingbysomehow · 13/09/2023 05:56

I often paint them the same colour. They look great.

GorillaInBikini · 13/09/2023 06:27

We did it in our old house in a small north facing dining room. Dark - farrow and ball stiffkey blue with a large dramatic light fitting. It was gorgeous and I got so many compliments on it.

I am thinking of doing my new 25ft dining room similarly!

Bedwomb has made me laugh, what a great start to my day. Tee hee 😄
